Vista Hangs For Awhile On Startup

I've been evaluating Bitdefender IS 2008 for a couple of days now and I noticed last night that the computer hangs for about a minute on startup (very little cpu/disk activity). The computer is running Vista on an AMD 64 5600+ with 2GB Ram. I tried several reboots and the same thing occurred, hangs for a min or two and then acts fine. I uninstalled Bitdefender IS 2008 and boot up was fine... Reinstalled, and back to the same issue? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

That makes sense, however my older XP machine doesn't seem to do this. Not a big deal as I only reboot the Vista machine every week or two but just curious.

Interesting note: I was using CA Internet Security before coming to BDIS and I've noticed a huge improvement in performance WRT Outlook, Switching Users, and Firefox! Keep up the good work!

I didn't have this before but when I was installing new nVidia drivers tonight the problem suddenly occured.

Took me 4 hours to figure out it was BD that was to blame!!!

Did a system restore to a state before I'd installed the nVidia drivers but the problem was still there.

Finally after uninstalling BD the problem was gone so I was hoping a re-install would fix things.

But no! After re-installing BD the problem was there again. I'm restarting at least 3 times a day so I don't want to sit around for 4-5 minutes each time I boot my PC.

What the heck is going on?

[edit]It seems it only happens when I start a browser. Explorer works just fine but as soon as I open FF or IE all ###### breaks loose. Up to 5 minutes! And when things finally start to work again I get a message saying "BitDefender Threat Scanner has stopped working" while the program itself tells me everything is working OK [/edit]

Everything boot_s fine, but as soon as I try to open IE or do something with that requires scanning, things slow to a CRAWL, if it's IE, it just doesn't even start for a good 30 seconds, then bang, I get the Threat sensor encountered problem message and from there on, everything works fine.

I have uninstalled the NVidia software(system monitor and performance software), but it's still happening. I don't really want to have to uninstall/revert the nforce the driver tho. I've also tried uninstalling BD Total Security and reinstalling it, but the same thing happens.

I was about to do a Vista reinstall, thinking I did something really wrong, but now I see it's not just me.

Please look into this, as it looks like an issue between the NVidia drivers and BD. FYI, I am running Vista 64bit.

Interesting catch with respect to the nVidia Drivers... My motherboard is an nVidia and I'm running the SATA drivers version 10.3.0.21.

You guys didn't happen to notice a memory leak (Virtual Memory, see http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=4239)

Did you removed first the previous drivers before installing the newest? Try to use DriverCleaner for removing the previous drivers. You can download it here. Reboot your pc and try to install the drivers again.

Try this right click on the red BitDefender icon that you will find on the system tray press on open advanced settings go to the antivirus section see if the shield tab is highlighted press on custom level now uncheck scan http traffic press on ok. See if the problem still persits.

If the problem still persists perform what is written here. Contact support by logging in with your account. Go to my care,by contact bitdefender section press on email.This is only a user forum, support people aren't active here.

Nope, using a cleaner doesn't help.

I used the Guru3D remover but it didn't help. And what's really weird is that the problem persisted when I did a system restore to a point prior to the nVidia installation.

I'm also using an nVidia 680i SLI mainboard and Vista x64.

The last time I rebooted I launched Task Manager to check if something strange is going on but there's nothing interesting to see there. CPU activity is almost zero and no memory leaks.

Ok, just got my first reply from BD after following their directions for contacting support (sending sys dump, scrn print, reg dump, etc) and they asked me to reinstall <_< . Ok, since I've already tried that twice (and mentioned that in my original support contact), I responded in kind. I will update if I hear anything back.

Edit: They did ask that I reinstall from the "installation kit", is this different from installing from the CD since when you install it from the CD it downloads the newest verstion as part of the setup routine. Are there known issues with the CD installation routine?

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll try them when I get home from work. I'm also experiencing a memory leak with vsserv.ext (Commit Size was over 800,000k after three days of uptime). Not sure if they're related or not but something isn't right. Maybe I should try out the BDIS 2009 to see if that fixes my problems!

I've actually taken the drastic step of reinstalling Vista(64bit). The reasoning is not really this issue, but a persistent lockup issue I was having with something else. That is what prompted me to try the new NVidia drivers and thus this problem reared it's head. This issue just made my reinstall decision easier.

I've only gotten Vista reinstalled, along with some core drivers so far(video and the new NVidia Nforce drivers that seemed to cause this issue). I'm planning on reinstalling bitdefender, after I get all the core drivers installed. It will probably be tonight, so after installing BD, I'll let people know if I get the same error.

Yes, I guess BD and Vista 64; since an BD update as those errors become more frequently.

I happen to be running Vista 32 bit with these problems... Not sure if this rules at the BD 64bit issue though?

The cd-rom version contains also the bootable BitDefender rescue cd-rom and Rootkit Uncover. For the rest it's just the same as the installer package (installation kit) that you can download from the BitDefender website.

That virtual memory usage off vsserv.exe is known. If you don't shutdown your pc daily you must from time to time restart the BitDefender Virus Shield service to do that press the windows button together with r now type services.msc. Leftclick on the BitDefender Virus Shield service and press on stop. After that start it again. Another way to reducing the vsserv.exe virtual memory you can find in this topic.

Thanks for the info! Just for grins, I did try the reinstall one more time. Unfortunately, I'm getting the same issues. As for stopping the service, when I right click that service all the start and stop options are grayed out. So the only way I've see to address this is to reboot. Is this a Vista thing??

I have 3 Vista x64 boxes that all started having this issue Sunday evening. One was an HP laptop with Vista Ultimate x64 and an nVidia graphics interface, one was an HP laptop with Vista Home Premium x64 and an ATI RADEON graphics interface, and one was a home-built desktop with Vista Business x64 and an older ATI RADEON graphics interface. All three worked great Sunday morning, all three grabbed BitDefender updates Sunday afternoon and all three stopped booting properly within the same 2-hour period Sunday evening. It was too coincidental to have been anything but an update issue.

strange that,as i have vista hp sp1 x64 when i first installed bdts2008 it used to do the same,also vista would not recognize bd would not turn off windows defender,but now is ok,?? apart from the fact that since the 30th oct2008 it will not update,but it does on a xp sp2x86 box?
