What Does "skipped Items" Mean?

Does it have to do with the "Smart Scan" feature I heard some years ago, which caches "known clean" items?

If an infected file is not caught by BitDefender AV (because it's not in the definitions yet and heuristics didn't catch it), and hence is added to the cache of clean files, and then a definition update happens which allows for detection, will BitDefender AV "skip" the file, allowing it to remain under the radar?

Open the Scan log and it will show you which files were skipped. BD skips password protected files, Windows System Volume files, etc

Go to Events--->Antivirus--->Highlight the scan you want to look at----->Click View Log---->Click Bitdefender Log File to see which files if any have been skpped. If there are skilpped files you can save the log and then copy the entries that were listed as skilpped. Feel free to post them here if they are not password protected or Windows System Volumes. There should be an explanation for each skipped entry.

Password protected files can be scanned through a Contextual Scan by right clicking on the appropriate folder/file, selecting Bitdefender then Scan. You will need the passsword for Bitdender to scan the file. Some app vendors choose to password protect some files so in that case you can choose to trust the app vendor or uninstall the app.

I just did a contextual scan on one app folder using BDIS 2015. The log showed 244 scanned items, 72 password protected items. I also did a contexteual scan with two anti-malware products, not antivirus. Both showed 125 items scanned which was 119 fewer than the items scanned by BDIS 2015.

I think the file will be scanned again even if it was tagged as clean on previous scans. I think this is how security softwares are set up.

Bitdefender has a feature called SmartScan, which decreases the duration of the scan by adding clean files to a cache so that they will be skipped at the next scan if the files have not been accessed or modified in any way. If a file that is already present in the cache is accessed, then it will be removed from the cache. This is what the Skipped Items from Bitdefender scan log represent.

The "cache" created by Bitdefender is the same for all types of scan, also for all the scanned files . Once you ran a scan, the clean files are moved to this cache. Also, Bitdefender is scanning all the files and processes accessed in real time. These are also added to the same cache if they are clean.

Only the clean files are moved to this cache. When you will start a scan, Bitdefender will first check this cache in order to know what files it will skip. Also, once a file from the cache is modified, it will automatically be removed from the cache list and Bitdefender will scan it again in order to make sure the file is clean.
