Password Protected With Ibm/lenovo Computers...

Do you have a IBM or Lenovo computer with Thinkvantage? I think I know the root of this error/problem and how to deal with it..

Scott

First an apology ------ I am VERY new to computers. At age 47 in October I finally grew a pair ----- I BOUGHT MY FIRST COMPUTER!!!! SO ---- IF my first post is A MESS I hope you all can excuse me.

The MAIN question IS ------- CAN I SAFELY DELETE THE FILES BELOW???

When I first got Bitdefender, as is normal for a new AV program, I did a full system scan. The scan turned up 4546 password protected "items"!!! (a SMALL sample of which is BELOW) Why these would be PASSWORD PROTECTED is something of a mystery to me. I PASSWORD PROTECT NOTHING!!!! So ...... with REAL TIME PROTECTION ON I went through them trying to open them. MIXED results. I think it was with Word that I did get a response. But, Bitdefender DID NOT do anything. Upon closer examination I found the files to be TVT files. I figured that I should FIND SOMETHING that opens TVT files. It turns out that they are "RealPlayer connected" files. I have RealPlayer on my machine ------ I tried to open them with RealPlayer ----- NOTHING.

SO ..... Is there another way to open these files? Do I need to open them? Can I not JUST DELETE THEM? I have MOVED THEM to the recycle bin. Even in my LIMITED experience with computers I have found that THE COMPUTER WILL WARN YOU if you are about to DELETE SOMETHING NEEDED BY THE COMPUTER. When I moved them to the recycle bin there was no such warning!!

Also, I understand that these files pose NO THREAT to my system and I could just exclude them from future scans. But, they ARE TAKING UP SPACE. When I was looking through the files I found that one folder might have only 2 items in it, while another might have a few hundred.

I hope all this makes sense to you guys. I await your advise.

Adrian.

    Rob,

First DO NOT DELETE those files. Actually you will not be able to....If you have a lenovo or IBM that came from the factory with Thinkvantage on it, (Those are the only PC that have that software from the factory.) the thinkvantage comes with a restore partition on the HD (That you don't know about). Kind of like a purchasing a home with 3 bedrooms and finding out it has 4 but NOBODY can see it (A pleasant surprise). Basically the hard drive is partitioned to have a "secret" section for restoring it the computer. You can only access this partition by interrupting the start up (I think it's F9 or F1 during boot up and running a thinkvantage program that runs off of minimum resources BEFORE windows even boot_s up). You can not access this section of the hard drive by browsing the "c" drive. You can only access it by interrupting the startup BEFORE windows loads.

Anyway let's call this section of the HD partition RS (Short for RestoreSecret); although of course it's actually on the Hard drive. This partition contains programs required to "restore" your computer to the original state should you have lost your boot up disk, bad HD, etc. Very nice feature I must add. NOTE: if your HD Ever goes out, PURCHASE it from LENOVO only to ensure you get the "RS" on it. They load it on from the HD manufacturer directly. Basically if your computer has problems, instead of sending it back to Lenovo/IBM they walk you through a process that can FULLY RESTORE the computer back to the FACTORY state without using any disks, etc. They do it by using the program used on the "RS" partition of the "HD" drive.

The files on the "RS" partition are the ones you see below (The files that come up in the Scan). They are hidden from you.....or any attempt to find them through windows (Because windows doesn't even see them), but are visiable to a virus scan software that checks the entire volume, not just whats on the "visiable" c drive.

If you will note: ALL of the files are in the "pre-boot" area. Guess what area that is??? Correct the "RS" area. Also they are protected by a password...Guess who has the password??? Correct..Lenovo tech support. If you are even more curious than I was, take out the hard drive and look to see how big it is (Say 100GB) and look on windows to see the available volume (It will be about (97GB), and then call lenovo and see how much space the RS takes up.....To my not surprise it's the difference, 3GB in this example.

In summary, don't worry about those files.
