edited September 2008 in General talk

Hi

i was updated my bitdef total security yesterday. but when i start the update today i see that the total update file size is 16585 kb (16.5 Mb).

then for 1 day 16.5 Mb

for a month 495 Mb

for a year 5940 Mb ! 6GB of disk space will be eated by update files.

i want to know if this update files will replace the old ones or they will be added separatly.

tnx

Comments

  • My Bitdefender folder located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\BitDefender\BitDefender Threat Scanner where the update files are installed has only 58Mb an i have more than a month since i have installed BD.

So the updated files will never reach 6GB

  • thank you for the reply and the info now i'll not worry about my disk space.

  • The update feature is not working as you may think it is; it is not downloading files over and over again, it rather downloads new files, and replaces the old ones or updates the virus-signature data-base. The size of BD will never reach that size.

Have a look at the picture attachments.

I have license for 5 pc's and all of them got the folder size that increments everytime BD updates.

I only have pictures for 3 pc's, but as You can see the size of the Threat Scanner folder is getting bigger and bigger.

On pc1 today it already updated the definitions 6 time even if the time interval is set to 24 hours.

Since the reinstall (still pc1 picture) dates 18th sept. the definitions got updated 30 times and they getting bigger.

This happens on all my 5 pc's.

See pc3 picture, 26 updates and folders are about 1GB, all together.

    So if every update is about 30MB * 365 = about 10GB.

So something must be wrong because the old definitions are not deleted.

    Any suggestions?

  • its not usual that Bitdefender updates that large of files. Its probably an improvement to one of Bit defender's tools, faster scanning, ect

  • I'll have to 2nd this problem. Can I delete any of these files? in the folder \bitdefender 2008\as2core\ the folder is 5.4 GB

    also \common Files\bitdefender\bitdefender threat scanner\ is 12 GB large.

Common guys this is a bit ridiculous my IBM Omni search index isn't even this big.

17 GB of antivirus scanning ability is not an improvement in my mind. Is this problem in 2009 also?

  • "folder \bitdefender 2008\as2core\ the folder is 5.4 GB

    also \common Files\bitdefender\bitdefender threat scanner\ is 12 GB large."

Wow, these folders on my computer are much smaller. Maybe you aren't getting cleaned up after updates or maybe something is dumping junk in your folders.

The "BitDefender Threat Scanner" folder on my computer is 20+GB in size. I installed Bitdefender Internet Security 2009 2nd of Oct so that partition actually got totally used.

The as2core folder is at 45MB (MegaBytes).

Xpero ,your concenes are about the monthly downloads dimensions or about the disk space ?

For the file download there is a solving its called modern ISP network services ,change your ISP.In Romania we dont have file downloads limit and the fiber rocks, maybe you should move here <img class=" />

As for the second ,dont worry ,BD will not eat your space ,but even if it did ,at this moment ,the 1,5TB hard drives are quite affordable.

Upgrade my friend ,we are almost in 2009! -_-

The P3 times are over :)

Wow I'm so glad that you have provided no help with this issue. I hope these people are your friends because you have made 0 effort to understand the problems they are trying to explain.

Seriously there are enough posts on this board to prove that this problem does exist. I cannot fault anyone for being wary of deleting files in their Anti-virus folder especially when they amount to such a significant amount of space.

In another topic you even recommend to someone that it must be their file system and XP is at fault. Even when this thread is prexistant and you responded to it.Seriously let's use some problem solving skills and start at the obvious possibility and then move on from their. Christ if the PC doesn't turn on it doesn't mean that the mobo is fried check the out_let first and work from there.

Smiley faces prove to be more of an irritant than a "everything will be alright" especially when you fail to offer any type of viable assistance to the issue at hand.

i have recognized this problem on 4 separate XP machines and 2 running vista A must be a windows problem...thanks  alas my experience is with 2008 as I will not be upgrading my organizations liscences for this product.

Best of luck to all of you in finding a viable solution that wont have you romping around you filesystems deleting files. I'm worried about the X number of customers that wouldn't even know how to google this problem as they wonder why their systems have been filled with worthess scanning garbage.

My question for those of you that are experiencing the problem, If you can answer them are you on a domain? What permissions are you granted? Is your user profile a user, special user, administrator ?

    *edited for some grammatical value

Think that was me getting that "advice".

I'm on a single computer running dual-boot with WinXP SP2 and Vista SP1. I got rid of the excessive 20GB+ of files by booting the computer to Safe Mode, then deleting the oldest files. Alternatively I can boot to my second OS on that computer and delete the files from there. Booting the computer from a bootable Linux CD that can read NTFS should also give access to deleting those outdated definition files. After I got the free space back on the partition Bitdefender has not suddenly stopped working but it's still can't find out how to delete those outdated definition files.

  • WoW! I originally posted the thread "Hard Drive Filling Up On IT's Own", and found this one right above it! I'm submitting a screen shot of the size of my BD Threat Scanner folder, showing 43.5 Gb file size. It appears that some people posting on this are in denial of this issue with BD AV 2009. I've just submitted my 3rd or 4th appeal to BitDefender Tech Support, with the hope of receiving some actual advice, instead of an automated response telling me to open an account (Which, obviously, I have). Check out this screen shot, and my posts on "Hard drive filling up on it's own" here on the General Talk Forum.

My sister-in-law swears by BD 2008, says it's great, loves it, but I'm not all that pleased with BD2009, and am getting less pleased by the day. I'm just about to the point where I'm going to kiss the money spent on BD2009 goodbye, and get another antivirus program.

Oh!! I just got a message saying I'm not permitted to upload this type (.bmp) of file. Take my word for it, though. It's 43.5 GIGABYTES!

I would suggest download a program like Paint.NET, convert the picture to jpg and then upload it so people can see for themself.

To all that have this problem, please run a FULL CHECK DISK with Windows XP utility ,right click on each partition/properties /tools/ press "Check now" tab and tick all the little boxes. For the boot partition you ll ne asked to restart, after the check disk finishes the computer may reboot , after this please look in Control Panel ->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer-> in the right panel choose "Application" and in the right search for a event with "source" Winlogon ,read the checkdisk result and post the litle info from there (select the text with the mouse then Ctrl+C and paste it into your reply).

Just to be sure its not some NTFS filesystem error ,which may happen <img class=" /> .

How is that supposed to help on the problem with Bitdefender not deleting the old definition files? As I have written I have checked everything and there is nothing wrong neither with WinXP, nor the harddisk, the filesystem or anything else on my computer except with Bitdefender. The problem is a bug in Bitdefender causing it to not delete the old definition files when it is updated. It's not that I don't know about computers. I have professionally build and installed computers for more then a year and given support to people having computer problems for almost 10 years.

Post the full check disk log!

  • Why? There is nothing to see. It found no errors of any kind just like testing with WD Lifeguard tool didn't find anything. Do you not read my replies?

No reason for you to reply to this post, from now on I will ignore your communication with me.

  • I'm facing a similar problem. The "BitDefender Threat Scanner" is threatening my disk space <img class=" />

FYI! The server is so new only, a few things as SQL Server, BitDefender, JAVA Runtime and Microsoft+Windows updates are installed on the server. Scan disk told me the raid disk is all healthy!

    now what? :blink::unsure:
