Can't Find Autochk - Skipping Autochk Boot Loop In Xp
Hi,
my second computer (XP Pro) is stuck in a boot loop. This happened after I opened a file with multiple viruses in it. Bitdefender Internet Security 2008 caught them, but the computer crashed anyhow. After that, the computer is in a start-up loop, displaying Can't find autochk - skipping autochk and then rebooting.
Pressing F8 shows the safe mode option but I cannot select it because the keyboard does not work.
I would have no problem reinstalling windows since the documents on that computer are on a slave drive. (the master drive has two partitions, just like the slave drive). But I cannot boot from CD (checked the BIOS, keyboard does work there) since the keyboard doesn't work.
I read that this might have something to do with windows not recognizing the c: partition due to the virus removal. That can very well be, but I seem to have no options to do anything at all!
if someone could please advise..
thx

If you are using a USB keyboard ,use an adapter or try a normal keyboard and try again to boot in safe mode.In case you have a USB keyboard check also in bios for a USB legacy option and enable it ,maybe will make your USB keyboard to work.
You can select in BIOS the device boot order to force DVD/CD/Rom/RAM booting.
You can also hit the F11 key(right at BIOS messages) for the Boot menu to show up, if your motherboard has an AMI BIOS.0 -

Hi,
thank you for your reply.
I tried an adapter but then I lost all keyboard functionality (I do have some keyboard function but not when I want to choose safe mode, strangely). Device boot order was already set to boot from CDrom. When booting I get the message ' press any key to boot from CD' and I can press a key but it still won't boot from CD.
I did not find a USB legacy option in the BIOS.
Hitting F11 does show the boot menu but then also no keyboard function.
So no luck yet. Any other ideas?
Thanks again for your help.0 -
nobody else? I have asked the same question to bitdefender customer support about ten days ago. Got no answer :-(
again, I have no problem reinstalling windows, but I must be able to get windows going/ or boot from a CD for that.

I really advise you to get a keyboard tha works on PS port.It seems that your keyboard ignores you while you are hitting keys to start the Windows instalation. This seems to be the only solution. If the BIOS would have been an AWARD one it would have start without the need to press keys. Also try with another CD ROM device.Good luck!

Hi, I got an old keyboard from my dad that works on the PS port. I'm happy to report that I can now repair or reinstall windows on my computer. Setup is happening as I'm writing here.
Thank you for your help, I'm all set here. Problem solved0
