Any reasons behind "why" I'd love to hear about.
Having more than one security solution installed on the same PC will cause slowdown, incompatibility issues, and the normal action of either one of them is not guaranteed, as both will compete for the same resources. This may also degrade performance and even prevent proper malware detection. For such reasons, we always recommend our customers to remove any other antivirus programs they may use before installing Bitdefender.
does this include windows defender that came installed?
When installed, Bitdefender takes over for Windows Security in 10 & 11 and Windows Defender in 7 & 8, so that real-time protection becomes disabled and as a result, will not conflict with Bitdefender.
