Something Definitly Wrong With Update!

Options

I'm at least the third person posting about this problem, namely after Oct. 30 auto update always fails with either invalid MD5 or I/O timeout error, even if there is no firewall running, or with a properly configured firewall. Please look into this. I'm personally running BD 2008.

Generally, these errors mean nothing other than the servers are being overworked.

If you have a router check it too.

  • I also have the same problem I am working with vista home premium 64 bits to. I hope the can fix it soon as possible

Well in that case it's been overworked for 36 hours now...I've experienced this both on Vista and XP, 64 and 32. Nothing in my system has changed before the problem surfaced.

  • I am having update problems on two systems also, one running Win2K and the other XP SP3. Update seems to hang on a plugin.

Update will stop here - File: Plugins/emalware.c02 -

Other files will hang before this shows, but when update gets to this particular file, everything stops then I'll get an IO timeout error.

Systems were fine until October 30, 2008.

    Any ideas from anyone?

There must be a temporary problem ,maybe some mentenance and maybe more BD users:)

  • I'm having exactly the same update problem, with same error codes as others.

Hope BD will advise us why, or fix, ASAP.

    Mick

  • In the last 24 hours I have "chatted" with support twice...each instance roughly 24 hours apart as a matter of fact. In each case I was told that BD was aware of this problem and that it would be fixed WITHIN A COUPLE HOURS. It still is not fixed.

It also appears that my Shield settings are corrupted, probably because of the failed updates. As a result it was recommended that I upgrade from BD AV 2008 to the 2009 version and instructions would promptly be emailed to me. It has been hours and the instructions never came.

I'm starting to wonder whether Bitdefender as a company is in trouble and the plug could be pulled at any time. Lack of reliability is not a characteristic of a stable company.

  • i just bought BitDefender GameSafe and i am getting the same errors, talked to a support rep yesterday and he said the update servers were having issues, and everything would be up and working in the morning... Still nothing.

  • My bitdefender haven't downloaded update since 2008.10.30.

So I've downloaded weekly.exe and trying to install but following error message returned:

"error reading plugins path from registry"

    I'm using XP SP3.

  • I am receiving a new error... says Unknown Error... downloading is going maybe a little faster but still unable to successfully download full update.

  • GOOD NEWS. I finally had an update complete this morning.

However, my Shield settings still do not seem to work properly and I still have not received the promised email from BD.

  • For the moment my update is not working :(

  • i have chat with the support and the say that the problem be fix it in a couple of hours.

  • It's 12:52 PM EST. Plugins/emalware.c01 still hangs on download. Will try again later today. Someone needs to tell us what's going on!

  • I can not believe BitDefender takes more than a full day so far to figure out what is wrong.

Can you imagine how much time they would need once a virus or trojan is discovered?

Last chat with BitDefender at 1:30 pm Central Time and they still promising us to have it fix in two hours.

Good luck for all of us,

    I run XP SP3 with BDIS-2009.

I looked at my auto update and it had failed on the last attempt, about 90 minutes ago.

I clicked "update now" and it seems to have worked for me.

I'll watch what happend next time it tries doing an auto update.

  • Always the same problem here md5 or I/O time error. And always with the file emalwareco2

  • I have contact the support system and the say the problem will fixed in 48 hours. And also because i have total security 2008 i can updat to 2009. My question is are the other people with problem with bitdefender total security 2009 for updating the system.

I was actually having a different problem to begin with. I was getting an error that said, "an error occurred during the update (Callback abort). My last good update was 10/28. My scanning and firewall were all inoperative as well at this point.

I did a "Repair" and it almost seemed to work. It was going through the updates when it was finally stopped by the I/O Invalid MD5 error you folks have been talking about.

So I'm stuck here just like you all. At least my firewall and manual scanning seem to be working again but eventually that's not going to do any good if I can't update. I guess I'll report this to Live Chat just so there's a record.

  • Just chatted with support:

Sawer: Welcome to BitDefender LiveAssistance!, Steve! Thank you for your interest in our security solution BitDefender.

    Sawyer: Hello Steve.

Steve: Hi, I'm using BitDefender Internet Security 2008 Build 11.0.17

    I'm receiving an MD5 or I/O error

    Last good update was 10/28

Steve: Plenty of other people at this thread now experiencing the same thing

    http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?sho...c=9408&st=0

Steve: Did a repair but it didn't fix it.

    Also checked this: http://kb.bitdefender.com/KB416-en--I-O-Timeout.html

Sawyer: Please note that this is a synchronization issue between the update servers and the update files that are uploaded on these servers.

This is caused by the fact that large updates are uploaded on the server and are causing these issues.

We are working on this issue and we will solve it as soon as possible.

Steve: It's been about 5 days now. Is a repair expected soon?

Steve: I'm concerned for my system security.

Sawyer: My colleagues are still working on the issue about the update server.

Steve: Okay. I'll check back later.

Sawyer: May I assist you with other information at the moment?

Steve: No, that's it for now.

I realize this is pretty much the same information we've been hearing regarding the problem. Hopefully it's fixed soon.

  • We all seem to be in the same boat so there must be a central bitdefender problem. You might hope they would inform their customers in some way, perhaps via their web site. It is not acceptable to 'hide' major service issues with silence, unless, that is, you are happy to erode your customer base rapidly...

Yesterday evening my BD 2008 updated properly on the rig it protects. You dont have to worry about your security few hours if you have a firewall and you dont use/dowload cracks or porns. There are antivirus programs that update at few days gaps.I m sure they are doing some improovements for the future, just have some patience.

  • At this moment the update is ok for me now :).

I hope everything going be ok the next time i Update.

As with Novan, my update seems to have gone through. As far as I can tell things look normal again. Let see what happens in a few days. I hope they took care of it.

  • Had another chat with Support and they sent the promised email with instructions on upgrading to BD AV 2009. I followed the instructions exactly and seem to have gotten a good install. Have so far updated about 3 times, a couple of the updates were large, and the updates all went through and installed OK.

  • well i was just told that it could be a couple of days before its fixed, joke ain't it, but i think from my pc's and o/s config's it a vista sp1 and xp sp3 issue, caused by a Microsoft security update as i have 2 pc's running XP SP2 x86 (32bit) without any prob's with bdts2008 and bdis2008 installed but on the Vista HP x64 sp1 Pc bdts2008 will not update since i tried on the 1st Nov 08 Hope this of some help, as it maybe that the offending update can be removed(un-installed) should that be the case until those at bd get their act together and sort this out,i hope they are gonna sort out an extension of the license periods as a result of no updates for the time it takes to fix this problem

  • As of 4:48 PM Eastern US Time update still fails for me on MD5 error. BDIS 2008 + Vista 64 SP1 as well as BDIS 2008 + XP 32 SP3.

  • Yesterday my 3 friend installed trial versions of total security 2009 in order to test update.

One of their total security's update working normally.

    4 > 1 (25%)

    We all using XP SP3.

    What's wrong with that?

  • Ok guys,

Thanks for this info, now I know why my BD 2008 isn't updating. My update runs slowly for a while until I get a MD5 timeout before the update has time to finish. I'm down in Singapore and was looking for alternative updating servers but didn't find any, is http://upgrade.bitdefender.com/ the only one?

Support confirm server fault that will be fixed in a few days (!!). I gues that might also take out antiphising as that seems to refer back to central servers too. Perhaps they have been hacked !

  • Emailed support yesterday and they replied within the hour, saying that the update servers were synchronizing and to try again later.

All seems o/k today and to be honest I've not been that worried about it for a few days. I am behind two Firewalls and avoid dodgy websites and have only had two viruses in 15 years, both my fault.

Judging by the hysteria about this, it shows what a state of fear and panic we are now living in, about internet threats.

Or maybe some servers were malfunctioning.Remember a lot of hardware is made in China B)

    Hello,

First before attacking me I don't work for BitDefender. The problem was with 1 particular file in the large update more specifically emalware.c01. BitDefender always check the integrity of signatures. Each signature has an unique fingerprint that should match. That wasn't the case and also the reason why updates failed. I reported this Sunday. Normally everything should be all right.

    Kind regards,

    Niels

  • alexcrist

Actually, the problem was caused by server overload.

In the last few days, the signature files were partly redesigned, which means that some large files (over 1MB each) should have been downloaded by the users. Of course, this means a huge load on the update servers, which lead to server downtime/mis-synchronization.

And because 99% percent of the users keep Automatic Update enabled to 1 hour (default setting), it made the server recovery somehow slow (because they were put through constant load).

Just to be clear: I'm not saying that it's the users' fault (for updating the product), but it was just a combination of factors that made the servers respond were slow.

But this problem is not 100% BitDefender's fault, because the actual servers are hosted by Akamai (not by BitDefender itself).

Also, it seems that the problem is gone now (I was able to update normally, without any problems just a few minutes ago).

We are sorry for any inconveniences.

    Cris.

  • Cris, pleased you could update. Mine is still unavailable.

What I did find fustrating is I went to access 'support chat' to find that after connecting, they disconnectd support and then prevented me from accessing 'chat' either to technical support or customer service.

It's difficult not having local phone support in Australia, let alone being denied access to online support.

  • Terribly Sorry Cris,

But the problems haven't been resolved yet. It's still not possible to download all the updates I require...

Hope you get the problems with Akami fixed soon!

  • I have the exact same problem now, and it has been going on for more than a day.

Here is what my error message look like.

    error.jpg

  • Well, would you believe? Just after I posted this, I tried again, and the update went through. Yay! :)

  • YES there is something wrong with the update, my friend tried for 2 days now to scan his PC from online scan but the BITDEFENDER-ONLINE-SCAN won't update, it reach 4% and then it stop's

Milion of users could not scan their pc online.

    Fix it, important.

    Chris,

I understand the problem but it doesn't really help me much. I installed BitDefender GameSafe yesterday and my first impression is very good, I like the GUI and it seems to work really well. However, since it was installed from a CD nothing has been updated and it's trying to download 45 Meg when I'm hooking up to the servers.

My problem is that if the update stops because of Timeout or MD5 (which it does after a few Meg has been transferred) the update has to be started from scratch. The Adobe updater remembers which files were successfully transferred and picks up where it stopped if the connection is broken.

The update servers of BitDefender should be upgraded ASAP. This is such a fundamental part of your service that you cannot simply ask your customers to come back later if they want to update.

  • For those of you who don't know, the UPDATE failure is a known problem affecting all BD AV products and there is still no estimated time to fix. I assume it is a problem centrally, and in its current state, not even the weekly manual download will work. You have to decide how long you can go without an update....!

  • isn't there any way to have this updating 'invalid md5' problem fixed?

obviously this is not the first antivirus i've been trying, but definitely bitdefender seems to have the worse support team ever... no way out has been provided for days now!

how come they release such a huge update and do not expect what kind of inconvenience this may cause???

  • It is now a full week since this server (?) problem started.

Evidently a few users have been able to update, but this is not a merely intermittent problem -- I have tried many times to update and have always been blocked by timeouts and md5 errors.

I was able to download and install the last weekly (signed 4 am, Oct 31). I'll try that again in two days. But this is no way to run an antivirus. Back when McAfee was almost the only one -- back in the days of DOS -- we had to download the updates. But back then, it was free.

I wouldn't be so disturbed by this but that BitDefender is saying nothing about the problem. There seems to be no official acknowledgment that there is a problem. There's nothing on the BitDefender site, nothing in the knowledgebase. And I had to skim for a while before I found this forum topic, and learned that the problem was real.

Similar problems arose 10 months ago -- a timeout error, perhaps being an overloaded server, perhaps a firewall problem. So, what is this problem, really?

  • Generally, these errors mean nothing other than the servers are being overworked.

    Dave

sorry Dave but i think you are wrong there mate, as i have bdts2008 on 2 pc's one running x64 vista sp1,the other running xp sp2media center,x86 , vista will not update since 30october2008, xp no problems updates each /every hour without a problem,as does bdis2008 installed on a 3rd pc with xp sp2 x86, its no server issue its a Microsoft service pack issue,sp1 and sp3 that bd have failed to address, either way 5 -6 days without 1 single update is a joke, not any point in it being on the pc it don't update on,as for UPGRADING to BD2009 products NO WAY as they are not working properly,it may just be the time to change av protection,as all you get from live support is lies or bullsh*t trying to promote an inferior product 2009 bollocks that dont work as it was supposed to, plus you cannot kill its processes so you can run a anti-spyware prog such as pc tools spyware doctor on your pc ,as bd anti- spyware is basic to say the least, not to mention the useless rootkit detection, compared to sdv6,

  • C'mon BD staff...It's been 7 days!!! Surely this isn't something you can just let happen!!! I didn't buy this suite just to have money knocked out of my pockets!

You can't just say it's the hosts problem and leave it at that!

Get this problem solved and keep your customers posted on the situation!

This situation and the way it is being handled is casting a big shadow on your product and your business!

    Hello,

Try this press the windows button together with r now type this : ipconfig /flushdns press enter. Reboot your pc. Reboot your pc and see if you can update now. Try also changing the servers.

Only the I/O time out error could have something to do with server overload the other message not.

    Kind regards,

    Niels
