    Hello @Beluff

What version of BD are you using, 2019? Bitdefender "2024" no longer has Disk Cleanup (was discontinued in 2020) but now OneClick Optimizer.

Please post back so we can get up to speed with the current version.

    Kind regards.

  • Hi,

To add here, this does sound like the process might be frozen, especially if it hasn't made any progress in 6 hours..
Maybe you can open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and look for the Disk Cleanup process under the "Processes" tab. Check if the CPU, disk, or memory usage is active for Disk Cleanup. If there's no significant activity, it might be frozen.

You can also restart the process. In Task Manager, right-click the Disk Cleanup process and select "End task." Open Disk Cleanup again and see if it completes the operation this time. Then, it may be worth to check for any disk errors:

    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Type chkdsk /f /r and press Enter. This command checks for and attempts to fix disk errors. You might need to restart your computer to complete this process.

    I hope the information helps.

  • Also, you can try following the steps below.

    1) Open the Run command and execute the following commands one by one:

temp – delete all the files in the folder.

%temp% – delete all the files in the folder.

prefetch – delete all the files in the folder.

    2) Run Disk Cleanup using this guide:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/disk-cleanup-in-windows-8a96ff42-5751-39ad-23d6-434b4d5b9a68

  • Yeah, I meant OneClick Optimizer, sorry about that 😃

Also @Beluff you've posted in the archive section, that's why I moved your post to the relevant category.

    Cheers.

  • I'm using automatic updates, so I assume it is the most recent version. After running Optimizer, a report appears showing results with the option to run Disk Cleanup. It starts. fixes around 250 items and stalls. I left it run overnight, and in the morning, it had restarted and fixed about 38,000 of 273,000. It continued to run slowly and stalled again at 43,000, stopped, offered a report that froze and would not open.
I see there are other suggestions. I'll try them and advise you of results.

  • Hi @Beluff and thanks for posting back. 👍️

Is your operating system up to date? Updates can sometimes resolve issues with these optimization tools.

In the event your Windows is up to date, try to free up space using alternative methods first, you can for example delete temporary files manually by going to C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Local\Temp and delete the contents, then you can uninstall any unnecessary programs → Open Control Panel > Programs and Features, and uninstall programs you no longer need. Restart your device and run a Bitdefender repair, as a second step, to eliminate any possible glitch within the product itself:

If this doesn't help, something else is preventing the Optimizer to do its job. OneClick Optimizer allows you to identify and remove useless files by running multiple cleaning tasks at the same time. It helps with the disk cleanup by identifying unnecessary files and folders, it helps with privacy cleanup as well and identifies temporary internet files and cookies, browser cache and history. Now, the area where I suspect it probably fails for you is the registry cleanup, where it identifies invalid or outdated references in the Windows Registry. I think this is most likely where it stalls for some reason, but I can't say for sure. I think the best way to move forward would be to ask the Bitdefender Support teams for assistance, because by the looks of it, more specific information might be required to troubleshoot this.

You can get in touch with the Bitdefender engineers by choosing one of the contact channels listed here:

    https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/help/

Choose your contact reason from the categories, then choose from the available contact channels, chat, phone and email/ticket. Chat would be the fastest way to reach them.

If possible, kindly follow up with us on this, because I'm interested to find out what was the root cause, and your findings may also prove valuable to other users who may encounter this in the future.

    Thank you.
