[resolved] Product Downgrade Possible?

I currently have an unused (never installed) Internet Security 2012 license which can be upgraded to Internet Security 2013. My question is: Can I upgrade to AntiVirus Plus 2013 instead?

  • Hi DAF44, and welcome :)

Yes, Christian will have no problem in helping you with that. He may have to make a license change for the AV+, but it is very workable.

Please wait for his assistance :)

    Thank you,

    Hello :)

    Welcome to the forums!

Could you please tell me why do you want Antivirus Plus? The Internet Security product has a firewall included + other modules.

Please send me a PM with the email address that you used to register the My Bitdefender account and you current license key so I can check them in the system.

DO NOT POST THEM ON THE FORUMS!

    Thank you!

  • Thank you Columbo and Christian! <img class=" />

The retail box Bitdefender software in question is a gift from my son and will not be in my possesion until tomorrow Tuesday therefore I don't have the license key yet. As soon as I get it I will PM Christian with all the requested data.

The reason for my interest in downgrading Internet Security to AntiVirus Plus is that I don't need several features/modules of IS and want to keep the installation as small and simple as possible. I don't use a mail client so I don't need the AntiSpam module, I also don't need the Parental Control module (no kids :D ). Since my computers don't leave the house, I think the router firewall and Windows 7 built-in firewall are sufficient. As an additional layer of internet protection I currently use Norton's DNS service which filters most of the bad web sites.

  • You're welcome :)

The reasons you listed are exactly the same reasons that I have the AV+ (let alone the Suite for my Laptop) ^_^

Bitdefender's Antiphishing/web page scanning is incredible, as it is against forum rules to compare security solutions here, but do a search for the Aug. 2012 Anti-phishing report by AV-Comparatives...very impressive on Bitdefender's part :)

I just mention this fact as with using Norton's DNS along with Bitdefender's antiphishing component, that your web browsing may take a bit performance hit?

    Anyway, see you tomorrow :D

  • Thanks again, Columbo.

Here is why I use the Norton DNS service:

Your pC needs a DNS service to connect to the internet anyway. Normally this service is provided by your ISP. Norton as well as Comodo and Open DNS provide a free alternative DNS service that can be configured to block sites that are known for malware, phishing and ****. I have been using the one offered by Norton for over a year now and have not noticed any speed degradation while browsing. Since most of the bad stuff today comes through the internet, it is my opinion that a specialized DNS service in addition to your antivirus of choice (Bitdefender for us :D ) is a better solution than running multiple antivirus products like some people do that really takes a toll on your PC's performance.

I look forward to joining the Bitdefender family tomorrow :)

  • Thanks for that follow up info. :) I did use, have used, Norton DNS when I used to "build" my own security suites. You're right, the protection is good, but did you ever notice a slow down in downloads that go through their servers? Christian may have some thought on DNS?

It will be super to have you part of the Bitdefender family tomorrow..you obviously know your stuff :D

Actually, the DNS server is only used to translate the web address you choose to the IP address in the server you want to connect to. Any web data (up or down) and file downloads are coming from your chosen server not the DNS server. If the IP address is black listed by Norton (or Open DNS) you will not go to that web site and will get a warning page instead. You can always choose to ignore the warning if you want to.

See what I mean, you really do know your stuff, especially the DNS, good job friend :D It has been awhile since I used it, so I wasn't sure of what program/software was causing that issue, thank you for your time and clarification.

Needless to say, I no longer piece together my own suites, as they (individual components/software) can have some overlapping processes, thus making conflicts more possible (let alone as you mentioned, those who try to run 2 AVs together, yikes :) ). I just now buy Bitdefender, and "be done with it" B)

DAF44...I found the error of my ways, as far as my recalling the DNS slow down (yes, I did find my notes from 7 months ago :) ) It was that I had set it up through Windows, "Configure PC" settings through Network Properties IPv4, and not through the router settings. When I just now experimented using the PC settings, the Bidefender Total Security download was at 1.5MB sec. compared to disabling DNS and the download going to 2.4MB sec. I remember from before, an iTunes rental movie that was going to take hours to download with DNS set in Windows, compared to 20 minutes w/o DNS.

I had never used the "recommended" router settings, which I now also tested, which did not impede or slow down my Total Security download, at the 2.4MB sec. Learn something new every day. Thanks for taking the time in your posts #6 & 8 to cover some of the tech side, as it helped me to recall and find my notes :)

Happy to exchange ideas and experiences, Columbo!

Just to time stamp myself, my first computer experience back in my college days : IBM System 360 (1963) ;)

BTW, is it already snowing up in MN? :)

  • Thanks for your hospitality towards me on your thread :)

OK, my turn, first PC was around 2004, before that it was Atari, that was the extent of my high tech life :D

Ya, ya betch ya, I'm going ice fishing this weekend...lol, no, it's not snowing yet...please, not yet

And where are you from, may I ask ? And thanks again for being so nice to work with here :)

  • To make a snow joke, I must be from Florida! B)

I have been trying to add personal information in my forum profile but always get a "You are not allowed to use this part of the board" message. Maybe it is a Newbie thing! :(

  • Yikes, how's the weather down there, are you getting any of the outer bands of Isaac?

Yes, if I could find my notes..lol..I think it's around 20+ posts to be able to add profile info.

Christian, after reading more about BD Internet Security 2013, I decided to give it a try and not "downgrade".

I just disabled the anti-spam feature and will not activate the parental controls. The installation/registration went smooth and everything is working as advertised. :D

Thank you very much for your assistance! You can close the thread if you want.

To Columbo: As you probably know by now, Isaac was a non-event for Florida. I pray for the folks in New Orleans.

    Hello :)

I am glad that you took my advise and now you have also a firewall on your PC.

In this case, I declare this topic closed.

    Have great day!
