[solved] Bitdefender Interfering With Login Prompt Cpanel And Whm

Hello,

As of yesterday when I installed an update for Bitdefender 2014, that required a computer restart, I have been unable to access my Web Hosting Management interface and my Control Panel (I own a dedicated server). Everytime I try to enter for example> example.com/whm IE reports a "page not found" message; Chrome reports: "The webpage at http://www.example:2086/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. Error code: ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED"; and Firefox reports: "Content Encoding Error

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem."

Their tech support reported the server was working correctly (in fact i was able to access WHM and Cpanel from my cellphone, so they suggested that I reboot my computer and check my computer antivirus.

So, I first rebooted my computer to discard a networking issue, but the problem persisted. Then, I uninstalled Bitdefender and rebooted a second time. I was able then to access WHM and Cpanel, without problems. So, my question is, what can it be causing my issue? I need to be able to access my server hosting interface but Bitdefender breaks it. I hope you can help.

EDIT: After testing this, I decided to reinstall Bitdefender again while typing this post and behold the problem appeared again, I am again locked out of my server login screen.

Thank you,

Juan Carlos

    Hello,

I already followed all the steps provided, the problem persists with all the modules disabled.

    Thank you,

  • I have also had the issue with Bit Defender Total Security. I have tried all the steps suggested with the same result. I uninstall Bit Defender and I can access my cpanel on port 2082. It is nothing to do with my browser as it happens in all of them. Please can this be fixed as I wish to continue using Bit Defender product but will be forced to change if the issue remains unresolved as I need to have the access to my cpanel. Thank you. Google Chrome gives error: ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED.

Great to know I'm not the only one, that should bring it to developers' attention. I have already contacted them boys the in app tech support module, still waiting for a reply. I have found two bugs already in this software, the first one was related to a problem with BitDefender updates requesting a reboot every time. It got fixed by updating to 2014 version. And now this. I'm beginning to feel disappointed about the quality of the product, at least in what they are supposed to test before releasing it to the public. :-(

I hope we get a solution to this problem, since we can't afford to get locked out of our servers. I'd have to uninstall BitDefender soon.

    Thanks

No, this did not help either.

  • It has to do with Bit Defender interfering with the browsers ability to decode compression, at least that is the error with FireFox. What OS are you running???? I have Windows 8. I had Bit Defender Inter Security and had no issues accessing the cpanel, only when I upgraded to Total Security did I have isssues. I have turned off each module in Bit Defender and every time the browser gives the same error. I have tried with IE, Opera, Safari, FireFox and Chrome.

I have tried to replicate the error on a Windows 7 computer with the same Bit Defender product installed and I was able to access the Cpanel using the same version of Chrome browser.

For now I am uninstalling Bit Defender until the issue is resolved as I have tried to isolate the module and was not able to. I even whitelisted the cpanel http address in the antivirus.

I hope this is resolved soon and I can go back to enjoying the reliable product that Bit Defender has always been until now.

  • I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!

I think the issue is with the current BD version (2014). I installed it earlier this month and my other colleagues have been using 2013 version.

What I did? I reinstall the 2013 version and problem solved! I can now login to my cpanel and webmail hosts.

    Good luck!

  • I am also having this problem with BD. I purchased 2013 but was provided with 2014 and now my browsers wont display the login pages for both cPanel and WHM. I have to use my Tab to get to those pages.

Uninstall your current BD, and download 2013 version installation file from this page http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=35494

This doesn't work either...well it does as long as you don't let bitdefender update..which isn't a real smart idea either to have an obsolete antivirus .

I'm having the same problem... not impressed right now, I've got three sites that all require cpanel or webmail access...

I'm using windows 7 with bitdefender Total Security 2013 - Build 16.33.0.1897 on the box with the problem (all browsers experience the problem).

On another box I've got a different av and no issues. (Same IP)

    Hello all,

Thank you for your valuable feedback!

Please attempt the steps below and let me know if you are able to access cPanel afterwards:

    1. Open Bitdefender -> Settings -> Update -> here under Update processing rules select "Prompt before downloading".

When an update is performed, you will see a box from which you need to choose ONLY Signatures Update (do not perform product updates, otherwise the solution below will be canceled).

    2. Restart your computer in Safe Mode

    3. In Safe Mode, go to C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\Bitdefender , find the file called "bdtl.dll" and rename it to "bdtl.dl_".

    4. Restart the computer normally and let me know if the issue persists.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Have a lovely day!

Yes, I just performed the steps above, and now I can get to my WHM Login Page. I also just got the popup box with Signature Updates already selected and NO Product Updates, so I will choose to update signature only.

    Thank you!

Thank you, this resolved my issue. I'm running Bitdefender Total Security 2013 Build 16.33.0.1897 and had the same problem logging in to webmail.

  • Will this stop the product from updating though?? What happens when a major update to the software happens and I want to install it??

  • I'm not sure if is the same problem but starting today I cannot access any secure sites with Firefox. I get an invalid Peers Certificate error page. For example, when I try to access my email I get the following message:

    "Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to www.xxxxmail.fm.

Peer's certificate has an invalid signature.

    (Error code: sec_error_bad_signature)

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command found in the help menu to report this broken site.

I get the same message when I try to do a google search

All of these problem sites are accessible with IE10 -- What's my problem with these Peers Certificates on FF23.01?

I have done clean reinstalls of both FF and BDIS -- but that did not help

If it is the same issue, what does disabling program updates do?

That shouldn't be a problem, but you can confirm it by going into BD main UI, Events/Updates/ and confirm you are receiving updates (you can also click on them and view the Log file). All signature and build update are done through this "channel" so as long as your getting the updates, your getting both the program and signature updates.

Also, for a more hands on approach with a graphic pop up notification, you can be prompted of major updates that need rebooting by going into Settings/Update/ and turn off Postpone reboot, to enable the pop up reboot message.

Also, can be confirmed in Update/Settings:

    updates_zps508b03a5.jpg

  • I encountered the same problem. Could no longer logon to my CPanel server or access email. I did as suggested and upon restarting from the safe restart and renaming the bdtl.dll I was able to access my Cpanel.

Bitdefender needs to fix this issue otherwise anyone using CPanel for their web servers will be force to do this workaround or uninstall Bitdefender.

This was the same instructions I got from support via email on August 23rd, it did fix my issue, except that now I have to do updates manually. It has become a bit annoying, so I only update the virus signature once a day. According to the support guy they will release a product update with a fix soon, but this was over a week ago, and nothing yet. :(

I honestly can't say I'm impressed with the bugs (yes, this is not the first one I have encountered) that go past Q&A and end being deployed to the users. Not something I should expect from a product of the reputation of Bitdefender. They need to keep things tighter internally and fix this problem soon

    Thank you,

  • Thank you all for taking the time to reply with your results.

I will let the testing team know about this issue so they can work with the development department and release a quick fix.

    @ robdquick

This temporary solution will interrupt only the product updates. The daily signatures updates will still work and you will keep the computer fully protected.

Thats not true. Today I canceled all updates, signature and product updates but still the file bdtl.dll is being recreated.

Rebooted system and problem is back..

You need to double check that auto update is NOT on. When auto update is off, Bitdefender will alert you with a yellowish exclamation mark in your widget . When you click on it , a pop up will appear asking for action, which is to update the software. Make sure that "product updates" is NOT checked and ONLY update the virus definitions.

    Regards,

  • I am having the same problem as reported through this thread. It took me awhile to figure out that it was BD causing the problem (Chrome, FF, IE browsers returning "ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED" error message). I spent a few days uninstalling and re-installing browsers, clearing out caches, cookies, etc. When I Googled "bitdefender ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED" the first hit was a link to this thread. I uninstalled BD and now I can access my webmail and cPanel web sites.

Our subscription should be extended for as many days as this stays as an issue.

  • Could not agree more. We should be compensated for the time it takes to have this issue resolved. Granted testing software can't cover everything but for it to take this long to resolve is a sad reflection on software that has up to now been solid and reliable in my opinion.

I am so glad I started this thread, since it helped you and others find a workaround meanwhile. I am too feeling disappointed by the bugs introduced recently in the software, feels like a pushed product without proper Q&A.

  • Hi,

I am a web developer, and as expected quite often need to access cPanel

This issue arose for me the other day for the first time

I have followed the instructions to and resolved the issue ... but after every reboot of my PC at the end of my days work, the next time I log in I cannot access cPanel and have to follow the same instructions again.

To say this is tedious is beyond explanation ...

Is there a fix for this yet ? 5 years using Bitdefender with my license due to expire in a couple of months, there is not a hope in ###### I will be renewing with this issue, I am so ###### off I am on the verge of uninstalling and go with Eset, the only reason I have not so far is that I have used BD for the last so many years

And yes, I do have on that I need to be prompted for updates, I only update signature and no product updates

Make sure autopilot is not on and that you turned off auto updates. You have to manually update from here on or the problem will appear again.

    Regards

  • Also having the same issue. Thanks for starting this thread as I've given the network team ###### over this issue only to find out it's the AV software!

Bitdefender, pull your finger out. I switched to you from the other big security names because your products didn't have issues like this. These days using ports outside of the standard 80,443,21,25,110 etc is not uncommon.

  • Hello everybody.

I have exactly the same issue.

Like all of you it appears since I did the upgrade, on ALL my FOUR PCs !

I cannot access to my cpanel anymore... except from my old netbook running MSIE !!!!

I spent all of my day trying to solve the issue and calling the support from my hoster before to suspect my AV software...

BitDefender please refund OUR licences, or please correct the bug quickly !

    Regards.

    Christophe

  • 20+ days on this so far and the best solutions are to uninstall Bitdefender or essentially modify a part of Bitdefender and be required to have ongoing manual interaction daily to keep it working,............

Bitdefender ! These are NOT answers.

The fact that users are having to spent hours and days searching for why their PC are sudden unable to access work critical websites sites is unacceptable. I have been watching this thread since it was formed waiting for an update stating that the problem has been resolved please updated to version xxxx.

Please updated those of us who have taken the time to annoy our coworkers, IT Departments, familys etc with the time we have spent trying to figure this out only to end up waiting for a proper fix with a time line of when you will have this fixed and updated. At this point a road map to the solutions might be better than driving us to search for new AV products.

  • I recently lost the ability to access Cpanel for a server I use in my work. I just spent three days wrestling with this problem, changing browsers, emptying caches disabling software piece by piece. Aside from the impact on my sanity I broke a promise to a client because I couldn't finish a piece of work for them that required me to access a server and I embarrassed myself by suggesting to the said server administrators that they had blocked my IP. I realised last night that the problem was probably Bitdefender and that nothing short of uninstalling it would fix my problem. A colleague pointed me to this forum today and I am relieved to see that I am not alone in my frustrations. A couple of things for anyone on the Bitdefender team who is monitoring posts...

I have this problem using Bitdefender Total Security 2013

The problem is identical on two machines I use, one runs windows Vista and one runs Windows 8

The problem appears in Chrome and IE (i understand from other forum users that it appears in other browsers too)

Stopping Bitdefender modules has no effect (do those switches actually do anything?)

As others have noted Cpanel access is critical for various business activities so this is not just an inconvenience it is completely unacceptable and renders my current installation of Bitdefender unfit for purpose. I am shocked to see that this issue has now been ongoing for weeks without an acceptable solution.

  • Yesterday I have installed BitDefender Antivirus Plus(switching off and uninstalling McAfee and VirIT).

Today I have worked all the day long, without an issue... Very appy of this product since I had to access my cpanel and / or webmail...

I hope a real solution will come soon, the one suggested some post above is only a workaround :(

  • Yes, we are still without a proper solution and the silence from BitDefender is rather deafening. I am currently not using BitDefender as I don't want to constantly have to apply a workaround. So I have paid for a subscription for a piece of software that I can't use. Is BitDefender (A) Going to sweep this under the carpet. (B) Provide a solution in 2020 © Provide proper compensation for the issue and ensure we, the customers will be swayed back to using BitDefender after all we are fairly spoiled for choice in terms of antivirus software.

  • +1 To the list with the same problem. <_<

  • Still no fix for this problem, as has been mentioned previously we are spoiled for choice when it comes to AV products, so when my subscription expires I will be moving on. Pointless having a AV that you cannot update the software. Back to Kaspersky I think.

It wouldn't be so bad If some one would actually answer the previous posts and let us know whats happening.

  • Hello,

I gladly inform you that we gathered all the information we need to provide a permanent fix for this connectivity issue. The fix will be delivered through automatic update of the Bitdefender product most probably tomorrow.

I will post again to let you know when you can turn the product update back ON.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped us during the testing period. Your cooperation is much appreciated! :)

    It works!

    c0zt.png

(I still have to restart in safe mode to delete that silly "bdtl.dll_" :P )

  • It works!

    [cut]

It does not work anymore!!! Now I get the same error that I had in the past days. What's going on?? <img class=" />

  • It doesn't work for me either

It's so weird. I used my cpanel yesterday, and all was fine

  • It doesn't work for me either. I tried Total Security and Internet Security, both 2014.

While waiting for an update to fix the problem I'm using TOR browser, it changes the ip and whatnot, and it works. It's slower then my normal browser (Opera) but it does the job just great. And you don't need to install il. It's just click and run.

  • Hello,

A product update was recently released (build version 17.18.0.808). You have all the details over here:

Please right click on the Bitdefender icon located in system tray and from the menu select "Update Now". Reboot the PC if requested, then this issue should be solved.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience, have a nice day!

  • Updated but still not solve the problem. Back to rename bdtl.dll to bdtl.dl_ and switch off auto update problem solve. So, I think new engine update still not solve this cpanel problem.

I just purchased BD internet secuiry yesterday and also found that i could no longer access cPanel or WHM. I did cary out the solution to reboot in safe mode and rename the .DLL file and it fixed the problem.

I was impressed with how ofoten Tech Support are monitoring and replying to this thread so that gives me peace of mind that i didnt make a mistake in purchasing BD. I was about to update since reading the update posted today. Since you have already done this and confirmed it didn't fix it i see no reason why i should put myself through the inconvenience of having to do the work around again. I trust other are having to revert back who have already updated.

  • it works without problems

  • it works without problems

really, now i feel compelled to try the update for myself. I'll confirm my results once it is done

  • Update to 17.18.0.808 now complete and it is still functioning enabling me to still access cPanels and WHM.

EDIT: if can help, my localized version is Italian.
