Windows Vista, Firewall Deactivated
Hi,
My system Specs are:
Compaq Presario C752 TU ( Notebook )
Core 2 Duo T5450, 1.67 GHz
2 GB RAM Transcend (667 MHz )
Intel 965 GM (on board Graphics X3100)
160 GB Hard disk ( 115 GB free )
Windows Vista Home Premium
I am not that good a techie so you might as well explain things a bit. I just brought Bit Defender Total Security 2008, and the NetZone is showing a big Red X. And a security issue states that the Firewall is disabled. The Automatic updates are on and it updates itself automatically but the Firewall just won't turn on. Now both the firewalls, Windows and BD aren't working, though I can turn on the Windows Firewall if I want to (which I don't want to).
Also as per the Issues thing I clicked on the Defrag thing and since the system is new ,BD said that a Disc Defrag was not required for both C & D. I unchecked it but the Defrag issue is not resolved.
Just for your Info , I am going to download Vista SP 1 today, and can anyone tell me if this can create a compatibility issue in the Computer.
Thanks,
Humpty Dumpty

Hello Humty Dumpty,
Reboot your pc again and see if the problem still persists. Start BitDefender also click on settings, firewall and see if you can check the box to start the firewall protection.
If so try this:
Please press the windows button together with r now type devmgmt.msc. Go to the view menu, select display hidden devices. Now expand the section non plug and play compatible drivers.
You may not see any yellow exclamtion marks.
Check if you can find:
bdftdif now double click on it it should be enabled afterwards go to the driver tab it should be started and startup type should be set on system. After that expand network adaptors do you see an entry called BitDefender Firewall NDSIS Filter Monitor? You may not see a red cross if that is the case right click on it and choose enable or an exclamation mark .
Go to the network center in vista right click on your connection choose properties there you must find an entry called BitDefende Firewall NDIS Filter Driver. That must be checked.
Sorry but it isn't clear what you are saying about the defrag issue isn't resolved. Can you please clarify?
If you are referring to that defragmenting is enable by default even when the condition of yoru hard disk is good. You can't do anything about that.
Best regards

Neil,
Thanks a Ton !!
I am at my office right now, will get back home after 2 Hours and do as you say.
I was just wondering does BD create a virtual device as a firewall ??
What I am aware of is tools like Daemon or Alcohol which can create a Virtual Drive to read ISO or NRG files.
Also , yes since the system is new it actually doesn't need a Defrag. So this issue cannot be resolved.
Thanks,

Hello Humty Dumpty,
Yes BitDefender does install a device (driver) into your network/internet connection to intercept network packages. What other entries are present when you go to the network center and right click on your connection? Sometimes other installed drivers can cause conflicts.

Hi Neil, didn't have to Restart , I just did a reinstall and it's working fine now...
And when I checked yes, NDIS was showing a yellow exclamation mark.
I did a complete uninstall and a reinstall and it works fine now.
Thanks a lot Neil,
Really appreciate your time & assistance.
Thanks & Regards,

Hello Humty Dumpty,
Good to hear that your problem is solved and that you appreciated my help. Infact you could have tried a repair installation before a complete uninstall and a new install. To perform a repair install just put in the installation cd-rom and start the installer and choose for repair or double click on the installer package and choose repair. But first you need to right click on the BitDefender icon near the system tray and press on disable.
Best regards,
