False Data Breach on My Home Page - Generated by Identity Theft Protection

Thurs. 03/19/26 — Hi; I'm writing as a recent convert to Bitdefender from Norton 360. I installed it last Saturday [3/14/26]. By the following Wednesday [yesterday], I began to get a red notice on the app's Home page that I had a 'data breach.' Of course, I was alarmed and followed the link. Whereas previously, the identity theft features came with the suite, in Bitdefender that doesn't happen. I followed the link knowing that I'd see the source. However, I saw a sales pitch. For this one, and for the Digital Theft Protection. Not interested at the moment, but it won't go away. When I was offline, though, it doesn't show. Only when I reconnect to the 'Net. This is why I consider it a false data breach notice - I never got one, didn't get pointed to the source, no options to fix it unless I buy something additional to what I purchased 6 days ago; none of that.

So, my question is: HOW can I make this annoyance on the Home screen of the Bitdefender Individual Premium app [on Windows 11 desktop] go away when I'm online? I'd greatly appreciate a solution.

Can you tell us what Bitdefender product are you using, where was this notification displayed (Bitdefender Central, Bitdefender product), and what does it say, exactly? A screenshot would prove most helpful.

The version no. is: 2.0.137.0. The name is: Bitdefender Premium Security Individual. I'm running Windows 11 on a Dell desktop with everything…

Most commonly, breaches include information about users’ emails, passwords, names and usernames, phone numbers, and physical addresses. Their exposed data creates a snowball effect that ultimately leads to the leak, sale, or trade of entire digital identities on the Dark Web.

Breaches are not necessary found on a specific website, so yes, the alert may not take you to the exact place where the data breach occurred.
They are in a compilation of usernames, passwords, phone numbers, etc. found in archives or texts on the Dark Web, in general.

Bitdefender's Digital Identity Protection service raises awareness about your Digital Footprint (data exposed in Surface Web) and remediation steps for data breaches (data exposed in Dark Web). However, you would not be able to change the username for a specific website, but you will be informed that in that specific period, data about you has appeared in data lists on the dark web.

This means that you could become victim of a scam. As the purpose is to raise awareness of these breaches and the data involved can be various, in the majority of cases there are no mitigation steps. If the breach was about a password, you could have changed it, but the breach can also involve other types of data, such as phone numers, address, etc. And if these are listed somewhere on the dark corners of the web, there is no possible way to retrieve or delete them from there, because you don't have control over that leaked information.

If Bitdefender sounded the alarm, then chances are, your email address was leaked in a data breach. Data breaches don't "expire", so this can be a recent breach, or an older one where the data has been leaked previously and appeared on the web in complilations later on..

3/20 @2:11 pm Central — Alexandru, I appreciate your assistance. I've been using "Have I Been Pwned" for several years. Being breached before, I'm familiar w/them and how to prevent them. 2026 will actually be a landmark year for my time in front of a computer. There are breaches listed from back in 2013 or so; they were taken care of back then. In fact, all of them have been taken care of at the time they happened. What causes them not to disappear if that's the case?

Finally - I guess my question is really for the support @Bitdefender, because I'm asking why, after such great marketing that persuaded me to make this switch, why are they trying to sell me something else after only 6 days? Being a computer person for many years makes you flinch at marketing ploys. It's not personal… In the event I change my mind, how long do I have to try another vendor?

Stickman, your suggestion would make sense if the email received from those who respond to an inquiry [like yourself] were sending from an address that didn't begin with 'No Reply.' What's the alternative?

Do canned answers like this one ever help? This shotgun approach is never welcome, comes off as preachy, and isn't really addressing ANYTHING the person brought up. Guess it makes you and your fellow "support" people feel like you got something done, but it's wasting all our time.

Unfortunately, it seems as if someone is confused. I am a recent purchaser of Bitdefender. Therefore, providing a 'canned' answer is out of my ability. One day, responses in this space will be geared towards providing solutions to those who ask legitimate questions. The first guy answered to the best of his ability, and I appreciate that.

Nevertheless, I'm happy to report that the fake data breach notices have stopped, after my desktop app upgraded itself about 4 or 5 times since its installation on 3/14/26. That was the end result that I asked for at the beginning. So, consider this matter solved by BD itself.
