is there anyway to stop bit defedner checking for updates on boot up, it is slowing my computer down when i first switch it on

Yes I think so, dig through the advanced settings and somewhere there is a check box that allows that.
Actually i like a fresh update on booting. Maybe my pc updates faster than yours, I see about 45 seconds of slow at boot.
