Dw20.exe Shutdown Error

All....thanks for reading.

Here is what I know:

Since updating my bitdefender to Internet Suite 09 I recieved the following shutdown error:

DW20.exe - DLL Initialization Failed

I know it is the software as I built the system from scrach (more than once to avoid this issued). What I learned is everything was working fine until I updated to 09. AS SOON AS IT WAS UPDATED AND RESTARTED THE ERROR APPEARED. I have seen other forms on this matter, but haven't seen resolution from the vendor. Can anyone advise on how this is being addressed? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as this is very annoying to me and my family.

  • Hello lizs5150,

DW20.exe infact is part of microsoft office more specifically the error reporting tool. See here for an explanation. You will find also instructions how to disable it.

    Kind regards,

    Niels

  • Thanks for the feedback, but shouldn't we expect more from BitDefender? Disabling a MS product doesn't seem like a solve but merely an alternative around the issue. Why is this throwing the error once it was installed? I am really not comfortable in editing my registry (for obvious reasons) but this products "bug: is requiring me to do that..... Shouldn't we expect more from the vendor?

  • New challenge....the steps provided by MS:

To disable the Application Error Reporting tool, add a DWReportee value of 1 to following registry keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\PCHealth\ErrorReporting\DW

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\PCHealth\ErrorReporting\DW

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\PCHealth\ErrorReporting\DW

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\PCHealth\ErrorReporting\DW

Require you to edit PCHealth which is not in my registry.....any new thoughts? Without any of the above, there is no way I can get rid of the issue.

  • Issue still exists...I have reverted back to 08 and everything is great. Still curious on why I'm not getting any support from bitdefender.....can anyone help?

I too am having the same problem. I don't have Office installed on my machine nor do I have a registry entry for PCHEALTH in my registry. Is 2009 the problem? Can I still get 2008?

  • I found out that if I close WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER before restart/shutdown...there is no error message. Maybe the error is linked to Windows Live Messenger itself?

  • Hello lizs5150 and TimPlaz,

Try this go to start,my computer, double click on the icon of your hard disk probably called c:,open the windows folder, prefetch now search if you find an entry that has Dw20.exe in the name. If present delete it.

I don't have this issue on all my computer that I own. All of them have office installed and BitDefender 2009 products installed.

    Kind regards,

    Niels

  • I tried what you said and it still doesn't stop the error from happening. I guess I'll just have to get in the habit of shutting down Windows Live messenger first, before I restart or shutdown my PC. The error doesn't seem to do any harm to the computer or files...more of an annoyance. Thanks for your input though!

  • New built out today...issue should be resolved theoretically :P

  • Hi,

I would like to know the progress done about this error. I've been reading everywhere about it and started annoying me because everywhere it said it's either a problem relative to MS2003 or a virus/malware, when in fact it was due to Bitdefender Security suite 2009.

And during the time the issue is fixed, I would like for a moderator to post a link to download the kit for the 2008 version since that one didn't create any problems, but which unfortunately I don't have it anymore (didn't think i'll need it).

I don't even want to start about how much trouble this has caused me, because i built a computer from scratch, fresh OS install and at some point this error surfaced. I think I reinstalled the OS 3 times, 3 different versions going from Vista64 to XP 64 to XP32 only to find it persisted. In the end I just learned to live with it. Enough of that though...

I kindly await an update and a link to the 2008 installation kit (or you can send it to me to my email).

    Thanks

  • Downloaded the update and the problem is still there. I agree, BD is trying to pass-the-buck on this problem to Microsoft when in fact, it's really BD itself. As mentioned above, the only way I see the problem disappear is by exiting Windows Live Messenger first before I shutdown/reboot my computer.

I'm still in my trial period of BD 2009 but if the problem isn't fixed soon, I'll be purchasing the latest Norton, CA, Panda, Zone Alarm product instead. I may lose some PC resources with the other products compared to what I saved with BD, but they were quick about patches and updates compared to what I see from BD.

  • Hello Razvan and TimPlaz,

This is only a user forum.

Please do this press the windows button together with r now type eventvwr press enter. Open the system and application logbook and look for any error entries that are logged. Double click on that entry and copy and paste or make a screenshot of it and post it in your next reply.

    Here's what you asked for:

    Type: Information

    Event ID: 26

Application popup: DW20.EXE - DLL Initialization Failed : The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

This is the one event that appears there which seems out of place.

BTW, after I close/keep this error, once I get the Shutting Down screen, I hear an error sound, but see no error. Again only happens when this DW20.exe DLL error appears.

Now I wouldn't want to appear talking out of disrespect, but I do believe that the people working to fix this problem can recreate the situation without having customers giving more information that it has been already given. You only need to have the latest Live Messenger Installed, and also the 2009 version of Bitdefender (Internet security, maybe others as well) and keep your Live Messenger opened when you restart/shutdown. I tried it on 3 different OS on my computer as well as another 2 computers in the house. Same issue appears.

I have the exactly same problem and totaly agree with all you said!!! Please fix this bug with WLM and DW20.exe...

  • Hi

I have exectly the same problems with "DW20.exe could not initialize dll" after installing Internet Security 2009.

Besides this annoying thing I also got the problem, that my taskbar (running Win XP Pro with Windows Blinds in use) sometimes comes up being too big. I know it sounds strange, but icons in taskbar is bigger than normal and taskbar height is bigger than normal. Uninstalling Internet Security solves both problems.

Final I think upstart-time is growing a lot with the new Bitdefender - maybe something that relates to the earlier mentioned things.

For the moment being I'm running with no virusprotection, because I can not find the 2008-version for download anywhere. Anybody who know where to find the old version ?

  • I can not find the 2008-version for download anywhere. Anybody who know where to find the old version ?

Well, I looked for it on the site, couldn't find anything. That's why I'd like to ask again for someone (if possible a guy working for BD) to point to a place where we could find the 2008 version.

  • I just got this path to the old Internet Security 2008 (Vista compatible version 32bit):

    http://download.bitdefender.com/windows/de...ty_2008_32b.exe

I have reinstalled the old version again - and have no problem now. Hope they fix the problems in 2009-version real soon..

    1. if u exit windows live messenger before computer shut down , the error don't appear.

    2. if windows live messenger not installed, the error won't appear.

    3. this problem persists with the 3 paid versions of bitdefender 2009 (on windows xp ) , my friends didn't report this error on vista.

    4. with bitdefender free version 10 installed, the error didn't appear.

so i am on bitdefender internet security 2008 and until further notice.....i hope when this problem solved do tell here in this topic. i won't try editing the registry this a bit complicated.

    hope this experience help!!!!

Ahh, I believe I did experience this issue on Vista 64bits. I can't say anything about the 32bits version.

Anyway, hopefully they'll stop blaming Office/a virus for this issue and start fixing it. It's clearly a problem that can be easily recreated. I don't know how easy it is to fix, but then

again that's why I'm paying to use this software and they are paid for creating/fixing it.

  • Well we all know that this bug seems not to be fix or difficult to fix. Because this bug appearad when bg2009 released and still goin on. i know the solution. Untill they fix em all i uninstalled it (bd2009) than i begin to use other av softwares which are trials

  • any fix yet? <_<

This is only a user forum. You should contact BitDefender by using liveassistance. Select technical support. You need to specify that the problem only happens on a 64 bit version of BitDefender 2009 products. The more information you provide and more people report it it's easier for BitDefender to fix it.

    Hello Niels

The problem here is absolute of a general type, because a lot of people have the exact same problem with DW20.exe besides all the other problems i the 2009-version. And I have to correct you, when you claims, that the problem only happens on a 64 bit version of BD 2009 - in fact a lot of people have mentioned the exact same problem in the 32-bit-versions.

What all the users really need is some serious information about 1. when is a new released out 2. what has been fixed in the new release and 3. What is left that still needs to be fixed. From nearly all other vendors of software this is standard-informations, but apparently BD dont care. Earlier I have recommended BD to a lot of friends and people I know, but this time BD has released a new product that is far from matur.e to release and now I really regret having recommended people to buy this particular product. A lot of them have had a lot of troubles with the 2009-versions and that is so bad. So I urge you to report back to BD technical staff yourself, instead of trying to correct users, who are only trying to get BD going on correcting obvious failures in BD-products. Tnx in advance.

  • Hello Teddy,

I can not test anything because I don't have a 64 bit version of windows. Each software configuration is different so that is why support need that you run these tools.

On all the computers that I have here at home I don't have the issue with a 32 bit version of windows installed. 2 computers have windows xp home installed with SP3 + Windows Vista with SP1

On all the computers office 2003 or 2007 is installed. The same for windows messenger. If you see the replies in this topic (almost) everybody does have a 64 bit windows version. Ok, you are right that I didn't had to post only 64 bit but look at this entire topic more people have 64 bit version.

I asked it a couple of times to release a bug fix or change list but they will not release it. Sometimes I can ask what the status is of a particular bug.

  • Opps this bug also for 32 bit version so i use win xp home sp-3 / 32 bit. (i dont use ms office) Even i sent my logs to bitdefender assistance with bd tools. With reference to my long process i can easily say that this is not a regular problem. it needs new release and new engine. So im encyription has got unstable behaviors and effects full system.

  • Hello,

Just to let you know, I have XP Professional 32bit SP2. I used Bitdefender Internet Security 2008 without any problems. A few days ago I upgraded to 2009 and the problems began. One of the problems is the error described here (DR20.exe when shutting down), another one is that often Bitdefender gives me the message "could not start bitdefender service, restart windows". After a restart it sometimes works, and sometimes it doesn't (same message). Or bdagent.exe and seccenter.exe errors when shutting down,.... I did a complete uninstall (also used Bitdefender uninstall tool) before installing it. I just downloaded the latest version again and installed it again, I'l let you guys know if it worked.

  • All,

I have the same problem and did not know were it came from.

Luckily I found this forum and indeed the problem started since I upgraded to IS 2009.

@Niels: Just to let you know: It occurs in the 32 bit version (Dutch) version: 12.0.10.3

I will follow your advice and contact the helpdesk on monday.

I have the exact same problem. Both the DR20.exe error and the "could not start bitdefender service" error.

    XP Home 32 bit SP3.

Especially the "could not start"-error is a serious one, because it is hardly noticable (only a slightly different taskbar icon - which might be hidden after a while as well). That way my system is completely unprotected until I notice the icon in the taskbar.

I bought Bitdefender because it came out best in several tests, but I would rather be a little less protected all the time, than not being protected at all some of the time.

I feel Bitdefender is not taking this problem seriously enough, based on what I read in this forum. The fact that this is "only a user forum" should not stop Bitdefender from doing something about the problems that many users report. It highly surprises me that we are asked to contact product support. That would only give Bitdefender a lot of extra work? I myself am not willing to spend hours sending email about a know problem...

  • As i said before it causes system crash than i uninstalled bd is 2009 and i just used other av trials. it really bothers me because i advice this product to my friends without any hesitate but now they abuse me.

    Hi,

Installing the latest (Dutch) version did not resolve the DR20.exe problem. I did not get the 'could not start Bitdefender services' problem (yet!), and the other exe errors when shutting down did not appear (only DR20.exe). But now I have another strange phenomenom, suddenly the Bitdefender scanbar appeared in the middle of my screen (I did not enable it!) at startup, and I can not show the Bitdefender main window anymore (desktop shortcut or systemtray rightclick do nothing). I can show the window with some basic settings, and this screen tells me the scanbar is not enabled (but it's there !!). I can remove the scanbar (rightclick on it) but the main Bitdefender window still will not appear. So, what's next ? I believe they released this product way too soon, it's not nearly as solid as 2008, and a virsuscanner must be reliable above all. I'll be looking at other products again.

EDIT: my version is 12.0.10.3 (Dutch)

Niels, so the English version does not have this problem ? This means Bitdefender knows about it ? What about the other problems I decribed ?

  • Hello to all,

To update: all my home computers have the Dutch version installed of BitDefender. The build that I use on all computers is 12.0.10.3. 1 pc has BitDefender Total Security 2009 and the 2 others have BitDefender Internet Security 2009 installed.

If it's a general problem why doesn't I have that issue on my 3 computers?

Did you tried the suggestions that I gave in this topic to the topic starter?

Try this also go to: go to control panel, click system, high light the advanced tab, click error reporting, check the box disable error reporting. That is how it is in windows xp.

For me the error reporting tool is useless. Most of the times you will not get an answer.

I do not know. That is Bitdefenders job to find out. Not mine.

Just for my information: Are you working for Bitdefender?

No I did not try the suggestions, because they involve disabling (parts of) programs that are working fine. This is a problem in Bitdefender. I find it strange that instead of solving their problem, Bitdefender suggests that I disable other software. It is like a car-radio manufacturer asking me to buy another car because their radio does not work in my car...

    Hello Maarten,

People who work for BitDefender are super moderators and virus researchers or have bitdefender as group. I asked that question because you all said that it's a general bug for all users which it isn't. I have only enabled error reporting for severe problems.

Try this press the windows button together with r now type this:

"X:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DW\DW20.exe" \REGSERVER press enter. You need to change X: by the drive letter of your hard disk. This might repair DW20.exe.

    I am offering solutions.

    Hello Niels,

I understand that you are trying to help us and I thank you for it. Your argument that none of your three PC's has this problem is of no consequence at all. Do they all have XP 32 bit, do they have the same software installed as mine, do they have 3 external USB disks attached to them, ... Hardware and software differences make it difficult te determine exactly what causes the problem on one computer and not on another one (I work as software developer so I have to deal with this a lot), and maybe it's some kind of combination of both. But the facts are:

    1) 2008 worked without a problem on my PC and the same day I installed 2009 the problems began (nothing else changed in soft or hardware), this is a very strong indication that it's probably the last installed product that's bad here.

    2) Several people are describing exactly the same problem, so this can not be ignored as someone who messed up his computer

    3) We should NEVER be expected to disable software on a computer (and this case even software that MS added to the OS) that worked fine before installing a product unless there is a know compatibilty problem and then it should be mentioned on the box of the product.

A virusscanner should be able to work in almost all conditions, with all possible soft and hardware configurations that are possible on the OS's that are compatible with it, unless of course the computer was messed up in the first place, but that is not the case with me. To me (especially considering all the other problems I did not have with 2008 and are having now) it is clear this product did not pass the proper testing before it was released.

  • is it possible to solve this bug in less than a month ? or year? which one?

    Hi Niels!

In that case, I am sorry for my tone. I was under the impression that you worked for Bitdefender.

But why is Bitdefender not monitoring their forums?

Did anyone contact support about this issue?

  • Hello Pomak35,

I reported this error to the support team here in Belgium, but so far all they were able to tell me was the usual stuff: "uninstall, download latest version and install again". I guess that in many cases that might actually do the trick, but not in this case, so I reported it back to them again, but no answer yet (but my last mail was from yesterday, so that's normal).

Judging from the answer you received they do know about this problem and I hope they will solve it quickly. Hopefully my other problems will be resolved also.

  • FYI I have the exact same problem as mentioned earlier in this thread. I have Win XP 32 bit and the latest BitDefender 2009. It is clearly related to BitDefender 2009. I also found as mentioned earlier in this thread that if Windows Live Messenger (the latest MS version) is disabled I do not get the DW20.exe shutdown error. Or if I enable Live Messenger but disable BitDefender I don't have the problem. Note as mentioned earlier that I have done as others in doing all this from a couple of fresh bare metal installs of Win XP.

Thanks for the info guys. It saves me worrying about why I get the dw20.exe shutdown error. I hate MSN messenger anyway :) I might just uninstal MSN or stop it from auto-starting in the options. At work atm, will try this when I get home. Personally I don't recommend messing with your registry or deleting dw20.exe. Hopefully there will be a fix in an update soon enough.

  • Hey guys, anything new on the matter? Does anybody know if it the issue has been fixed in one of the recent updates ?
