Bitdefender Deleted My Stuff.

Options

Thankfully I had backups(wouldn't want to know what I would have said here if I hadn't). ^_^

It's really annoying to have a safe file detected as a virus and deleted without your approval... Kind of ironic that I paid $70 for BD to protect my stuff.

I would like to know how to set BitDefender to ask for my permission when it runs into such things again. I've looked at the settings and am still unsure of what to change. I have googled it as well, but didn't really find anything helpful, so I came to the support forum.

With anticipation,

Ray

    Hello Raymond W.,

In order to assist you please tell us if the real time protection deleted these files(on access when launching the programs) or if they were deleted after a scan.

It would also be very helpful if you could upload a sample of those files on a FTP server in order for us to be able to analyze them and remove the detection if they are indeed false positives.

    Thank you!

  • The applications were deleted after a full system scan...

[sorry about the double post] I put copies of them onto a removable disk(from another pc) then tried putting them back onto my computer, but BD just deletes them again when I plug the memory stick in. I could disable the device detection for that though.

    Hello Raymond W.,

First, you can change the default action that BitDefender takes for an infected file during a scan - open BitDefender, go to Advanced View - Antivirus - Virus Scan - right click on Full System Scan and select Open. Then go to Overview - click on the "Custom" button and select for Action Options -> "Take no action" in order to make sure that BitDefender does not delete any files without your permission.

After a scan finishes you will be prompted to select the action to take concerning infected files it finds.

Also, to analyze the files and determine if they are indeed false positives please be so kind as to upload them and provide us with a download link - this way a permanent resolution can be implemented in the product.

    Thanks!

 This I do not understand:

    http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/B...pg?t=1243881915

^That is what I changed the settings to ("Deny access and continue").

Then I tried putting the 'harmful' file on the the hard drive using the memory stick again, but got an alert saying:

BitDefender has blocked a virus affecting your computer!

    Virus Name:

    Trojan.Generic.1323589

    Location:

    F:\keygen.exe"

This time it was not deleted, only blocked. So I tried opening it but got this error message:

    http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/B...pg?t=1243885669

I cannot actually believe this. Is there no way to simply have BitDefender ALLOW certain things? It's like this AV has a mind of it's own.

    Please help! :(

    Hello Raymond W.,

First of all, the behavior of BitDefender under the settings that you have changed is normal. Please note that here you set the on-access scanner or the real time protection (not the on-demand one) to "Deny and continue" meaning that it will deny access to the file, without moving or deleting it but it will not allow you to access/run it.

If you want the real time protection to stop deleting the file you have 2 options: in order to upload the sample you can simply uncheck "Real time protection is enabled" in BitDefender - Advanced View - Antivirus and upload the file - then recheck the checkbox. The second option would be to create an exception for the location of the file using the Exclusions tab.

  • Alright, looks like I've got everything sorted.

    Thank you! :)
