Major Update Causes Bd Connection Problem
I have posted in another topic that, after today's major update, BD had lost connection to the update server. I was getting the message:
"An error occured during the update (Could not connect).
If the problem persists, please check our online support website at www.bitdefender.com/help for more information."
Now, after 2 restarts, the problem seemed to have been fixed. I have put the computer to sleep, left home, then returned now, got it out of sleep and realized that the problem has returned.
Can someone please help me fix this problem?
Just as a note: I am not connecting through proxy and I have tried the alternate update servers with no success.

I have looked at this thread http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=15785 with the solution given there, but I cannot apply it, since I have BD AV, not BD IS and there is no Firewall tab available.

I am not doing any scans right now. I tried it again and I got the same error message.

1. Start your computer in Safe Mode :
- restart the computer;
- repeatedly press the "F8" key several times before Microsoft Windows begins
to load (you need to press "F8" until you will be displayed a text menu);
- select "SAFE MODE" in the text menu and press "Enter".
- wait while Windows loads in Safe Mode; this process ends with a confirmation
message; click "Yes" to acknowledge.
2. Go to the next location : C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2010\Ini\Default . Here you will find a file called "v_live_s.xml" . Right click on it and choose Copy .
3. Now, go to the next location : C:\Program Files\Common Files\BitDefender\BitDefender Update Service and paste this file, selecting Yes, when you will be asked if you want to replace the file.
4. Start your computer in Normal Mode and try to update BitDefender.0 -
I saw that stuff in another thread, but it's not the same problem that is described there. I'd rather not try that until someone from BD Technical Support tells me that it is the solution that I should follow.

Just to add here: I checked the Active Virus Control panel, there is no rule there regarding livesrv.exe.
I don't know how to fix this ... if it was like at BD IS, it would've been a simple solution with the Firewall tab.
Please help me.0 -
Hello all,
Today, we have released a major update that have solved major issues described and discussed on this forum . Here is a list of these topics/issues :
Unjustified Vulnerability Error, Windows Live Messenger outdated
Bdis, Windows Live Messenger, And Messenger Plus! Live Problem
Windows Live Messenger Crash, Program Closes Itself Without Any Error
BitDefender services have been switched off temporarily for an update
Update Unavailable, Can't update Antivirus 2010
Our recommendation is to update BitDefender and in case these issues still reproduce on your system, please let us know adding your replies to the corespondent topic.
Thank you.
well so far,the Unjustified Vulnerability Error, Windows Live Messenger outdated still is displayed, even though i do NOT have that garbage windows live messenger anywhere on my pc, xp sp2 i know has messenger 4.7,that can be disabled, which it is on my pc,
the point that i make is that BD is detecting software that is not on my pc, or appears to be,
BitDefender services have been switched off temporarily for an update this appears to be fixed,no longer switching off during update process (although this had stopped on the 29/10/2009 for me),But as has already been posted i had to do the 'Copy & Paste' Fix. As the update failed after version updated,0 -
Is the solution posted above by Alex Stefan actually working for this situation?

Ok, so I tried the solution posted above by Alex Stefan. It didn't work for me, I still have the problem.

I hope your Bitdefender it's correctly installed.0 -
BitDefender was working just fine (with a few minor bugs) until yesterday's Major Update. I don't think it's an installation problem. Something in the Update messed things up.
0 -
And just to add: this morning two updates did squeeze through but the rest of them are giving me this error.
And when the updates do squeeze through, I get the "Bitdefender services are not responding" message or the "Critical error" message.0 -
you use BD TS2010 ?
0 -
No, I am using BD AV 2010.

me to exactly the same . losing patience

Well it got bd updating again for me at least, although at first it was still in a dither, but after i manually performed an update, it started working im using BD IS 2010 btw0 -
I tried it manually too, Davey, but it didn't work.
I'm on BD AV ... maybe that's why it's not working? I don't know.
EDIT: Seems there are other people with the same problem too.0 -
i got the standard reply from BD support, uninstall with thier tool to delete previous install files, download it again and reinstall.
only thing is......
brand new hard drive, clean install of windows & pro x64, all installed on friday.
all working fine untill this big update.
BD, sort it out0 -
Update from me:
So after I performed the solution posted above, in the first 3 hours I had 5 BD updates: 2 manual and 3 automatic. 1 manual update and 1 automatic update failed but the rest of them worked. I've put the computer to sleep and went out, then returned and had another automatic update. This one succeeded as well, without BD error messages.
Seems that the approach above does work then, even if it does take some time to work.
I'll keep you posted if the connection errors or the 'services are not responding' errors reappear.0 -
The "could not connect" message has returned. The fix didn't last long. The problem has returned.
0 -
Ok, so the "could not connect" problem persists both on manual and automatic updates. I barely managed to get in two manual updates to keep myself updated.
Good thing is the "services are not responding" error messages seem to have disappeared after applying that approach this morning.
In any case, I hope a solution for this problem is found soon, a solution that hopefully doesn't involve uninstall and reinstall of BD 2010.0 -

This prob may well be fixed on systems running xpsp2 x86(32bit)
But it is quite a different story on systems running win 7 and vista As also have vista hp sp2 x64,
which until this major upgrade was working ok, now it doesn't in particular the update module
1, checks x2 to 85% and fails
2 checks to100% no avail update
3 checks &downloads a small 36kb file taking in excess of 3mins to complete and fails to log it in bd history log
3 vsserv.exe now hangs during/after updates,(greyed out ball tray icon) no activity window and the vsserv.exe error pop up,
vsserv.exe(virus shield) stops (not visible in task manager)
I found a temp fix as an alternative to re starting your pc, go to the main bd folder(located in program files) open, and find vsserv.exe just click on it, vsserv.exe then initializes itselft and the icon turns red again,
btw i have re installed bd is 2010 to get where i am now, as my previously installed working version would no longer update after the failed fix0 -
Well, I would prefer a fix that doesn't involve uninstalling and reinstalling, as I said above. Mostly because it might not solve the problem anyway.

Well i would sooner click on the vvserv.exe to re-initialize it than shutdown-restart my pc to do the same thing, as for the re-installing of bd,i only did that due to the fact bd would not update, not due to the issue with vvserv.exe, both restarting the pc or bd are not desirable but at least one is less time consuming and possibly not as disruptive to whatever you were doing, you could make it even less painful and make a desktop shortcut to vvserv.exe, to use until a official fix materializes, but if it isn't of any help to you,it maybe to someone else, vvserv.exe is also hogging my cpu,at times causing windows explorer to hang temporarily, never had these probs with vista before today when i updated bd, vvserv is still switching off during updates too another thing that it never did with vista, i had lots of similar probs on xpsp2 though0 -
I was not referring to the "services are not responding" messages, I was referring to this whole update business. I haven't had any BD error messages since yesterday morning.

Well your one of the ok crew, lol, maybe something x64bit ? causing this, but like you say bd updates have been a problem for many since release on and off, it would seem as one fault is fixed it causes another to develop, and what will make bd run smoothly on one group of machines will cause a major headache for another group, and history tends to repeat it's self too,as both 2008 and 2009 products had issues and these persisted for 6mths before finally most major problems for most were fixed, but as there av AIO security suites get more and more complexed, partly trying to keep with other av vendors instead of quality control maybe,0 -

yes, there looking into it0 -
Isn't that a different issue though? That's about "services are not responding" message.

Hello all,
In order to further investigate this sittuation, next time you receive the message "An error occured during the update (Could not connect)" when youtry to update your BitDefender, we recommend you to follow the steps bellow :
1. Go to Start->Run
2. Type cmd and hit Enter
3. Type
cd %programfiles%/bitdefender/bitdefender 2010
and hit Enter
4. Type
supporttool.exe /livesrvtrace on
and hit Enter
5. A popup should appear asking you to reboot the PC. Reboot the PC.
6. Open BitDefender in Expert Mode, click on the Update module and click on the Update Now button.
7. Browse to the next location from your PC : C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BitDefender\DTrace (Windows XP) or C:\ProgramData\BitDefender\ DTrace (Windows Vista and Windows 7) and look after the file livesrv.log .
8. Upload the report on http://www.sendspace.com/ then post here the download link .
We are looking forward to your reply .
Thank you.0 -
Ok, so I tried to make a manual BD update. I got the message in question and I tried to go through the procedure you posted.
I am unable to perform all the steps you are describing above. As soon as I perform step 4, I get the message "The operation failed. Please restart the computer and try again."
I do that and I do steps 1-4 all over again and I get the same message. As a result, there is no livesrv.log file in the location you specified.
Edit: I tried the same thing after a failed automatic update. Same result.0 -
Can someone tell me how I find out if I have that major update?
Would running the weekly.exe get that or is that JUST definitions?0 -
Alex - I followed your steps above. After reboot I tried to update and got the same old message. Here is the link for that livesrv log
0 -
At least someone was able to perform the steps. Cheers, Nikilet. Maybe they can find something based on that log.
L.o.D.: check your BD version. If it's 13.0.17, you have that Major Update.0 -
Thanks AndreiRC. I do have it.
Still have issues. The one for now is the network feature states my PC is offline when obviously is not.
When I click to add another, it does not find the 2nd PC with BD 2010.0 -
Ok, I figured out what went wrong with what I did. I should've run Cmd as Administrator.
I did that, restarted the computer as prompted (this time it said 'the operation was successful') but now I had four updates, three manual and one automatic. All of them were successful, without even the slightest sign of trouble.
Alex, should I keep the livesrvtrace service on and send you the livesrv.log file when the update fails again?0 -
Nevermind, the second automatic update failed a few seconds ago.
Here's the link to the log file. Hope you can find a solution to this.0 -

Alex,
The "major update" seems to have affected my update capabilities!!!
After a lot of problems installing it I finally had my Bitdefender TS 2010 up and running (still with some bugs though!), but I didn't have any updating problems. Since the "major update" not only Bitdefender refuses to update, but also I suddenly experience instances where Bitdefender TS 2010 "grays out" on me: it stops running altogether in the often described fashion!
This can not be the goal of a major update! I have to admit I'm getting rather fed up with this piece of software: while we have to wait for solutions for bugs which shouldn't be there in the first place, now the updates destroy a version that was more or less up and running!
Please advise!
Yannis
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
Prod.: Bitdefender TS 2010
Proc. Intel Q9550

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6
As an extra note I want to add that I do not find the solutions given satisfactory at all: I feel more like a Beta tester for the Bitdefender company than a paying customer!!
"Produce some dump, upload it to a sendspace adress, wait for an answer" etc. If this problem persists into the next week, I will be applying for a refund. I've already spent a lot of days getting this software to run, and even so I've never had an instance where the software was running as it should!

I have uninstalled/reinstalled BD but still unable to update. I'm running BD IS2010 (Virus Sig. 4260821 and Engine Ver. 7.27868) with operating system Windows 7 Ultimate.
Hope you can find a solution to this soon.0 -
A comment to Yannis: You couldn't have said it better! I installed this 2010 on Oct. 5 and the hours and hours and hours I have spent on this buggy program are out of this world. Like you, it still wasn't working totally correct, but was finally running fairly well until that update and now everything is mush again.
Now an update on my situation:
I did the steps outlined by Alex in the previous page and after restart I tried to update and no change. Then I did the steps again but before doing them first I went into Firewall/Rules/Advanced and deleted that livesrv.exe file, did the steps and rebooted. I was able to run "Update Now" without getting the "Can not connect" deal, but it said there was no update available. I have run it several times since and the same thing. It is now 12:44 p.m. here and I haven't had an update since 7:33 a.m. I find it hard to believe that there have been no updates to the program in the past 7 hours so even though I'm not getting the red error message, I don't think things are working because I can't believe there wouldn't be any updates at all to the antivirus rules in 7 hours.
I see several, incuding me, have posted links to that livesvr.exe log. I wonder if anyone is looking at them???0 -

There have been quite a few updates in the past 7 hours. My engine version from about 2 hours ago says 7.28760.
As for people looking at the log files, it might take a while. The BD guys are quite a few hours ahead of us, it's 10 pm there now. Probably we won't get an answer till tomorrow.0 -
My AV engine version is 7.28707

I have had no updates since around 7AM this morning.
I keep trying & none are found.0 -
OK.
Uploaded my log file to sendspace: http://www.sendspace.com/file/xl1uzu
By the way, thanks to AndreiRC for the tip of running CMD as an administrator!
Yannis
(BTW: AV engine version is 7.28760, nothing else coming through!)0 -
You're welcome, Yannis. I discovered it myself so thought I'd share it.
I got the AV engine to 7.28761 as well a few minutes ago. Although I had to pretty much push the update through.
For Alex Stanciu when he will check this thread (since there are a lot of posts):
So the links to the log files are so far in posts #35, 39, 41, 47.
Let us know what you guys find out from them.0 -
Mine says 7.28756. But then why is the program now acting normal? It's scanning with no error messages; just telling me no updates are available. This seems very curious to me. Why isn't it giving me the error message? Why is it seemingly scanning for updates and then just telling me none are available when they are?
Oh forget those questions! This program is not operational and it should never have been released, except to beta testers and we here all know that. " />0 -
I had to come back because just now when I closed IE the update screen was open and running. It shows an update of 316 KB is being downloaded and looks as though it will go through. But what in the heck is the deal with the length of time it is taking for these updates ?
A 316 KB file on high speed DSL should download and install in just seconds and it takes forever! Now I'm at 7.28762.0 -
Ok, now I have the 7.28761.
