    Hi Trudy

    I too had this same problem with X64 and Word 2007, and also with another programme.

    You were in the right area suspecting splwow, but it is potentially dangerous to attempt to alter Windows file names, indeed you may find that splwow64.exe was recreated when you closed the Windows folder.

    The "wow" part of the name simply means "Windows on Windows", which allows 32 bit software to run on the 64 bit platform. I believe the "spl" part means "Splash", which is where your Word software is freezing, at the yellow introductory "Splash Screen".

    If you selected "Start" then "Search for Files and Folders" and searched for splwow*.* you would find there are two instances, one in the C:\Windows folder, and the second in the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder, and it is Prefetch which is causing the freezing.

    The simplest solution is to disable the Prefetch service, (it can cause computer slowdown at the best of times). Disabling Prefetch requires a minor registry modification thus.

    Select "Start" then "Run", then type in Regedit and click "OK". Open the Registry to the following key and change the REG_DWORD to 0, thus.

    Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

    Name: EnablePrefetcher

    Type: REG_DWORD

    Value: 0

    The EnablePrefetcher key has the following values:

    0 = Disabled

    1 = Application launch prefetching enabled

    2 = Boot prefetching enabled

    3 = Application launch and boot enabled

    To disable Prefetch, set the value to 0.

    See Microsoft website http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms...mbedded.5).aspx for more details.

    Hope this is of help, as I have had no further problems with any programmes since carrying out this mod.

    All the very best,

    Willum

    Ok your fix seems appealing except for the scary part you mentioned " (it can cause computer slowdown at the best of times). " What the heck? Is this the only solution?

    I have two problems, (btw Ive been wasting the last 2 weeks of my time trying to solve this, through google/bd forums/microsoft tech support/bd tech support/self help

    1. it interferes with winword, (office word) and makes it crash, hang.. on splash screen (or welcome screen)

    2. guess bitdefender doesnt like the red color, cause it continues to switch to grey, and services stop working.

    Please find a solution, or please refer me to customer service for a full refund.

    Hello ProtectMyPc,

    In order to solve this issue please be so kind as to make sure you uninstalled any other security solution you might have on the same computer (any spyware removal, anti adaware, registry monitor or another antivirus).

    Having more than one security products installed on the same PC can degrade performance and cause system instability. Even if they are turned off, there are some active processes running in the background. We recommend you to uninstall all the other security solutions in order for BitDefender to work properly. We also recommend you to run a registry cleaner on your computer in order to improve the system performance.

    Please follow the steps below in order to disable BitDefender Active Virus Control:

    1. Open BitDefender Security Center.

    2. Click on 'Settings' and switch to 'Expert Mode'

    3. Go to 'Antivirus' tab.

    4. Click on 'Advanced Settings' and Disable the 'Active Virus Control' feature.

    5. Test to see if the issue still replicates.

    If none of these steps above solved the issue you are dealing with, in order to troubleshoot the issue you are encountering, we would like you to follow the steps below:

    1. Start and select Run (for Vista you have the search box);

    2. Type 'cmd' and hit Enter;

    3. Type

    cd %programfiles%/bitdefender/bitdefender 2010

    and hit Enter;

    4. Type

    supporttool.exe /vsservtrace on

    and hit Enter;

    5. A pop-up should appear asking you to reboot the PC. Reboot the PC. If you are not asked to restart the PC, please do so on your own;

    6. Open BitDefender and reproduce the issue a couple of times;

    7. Click on Start and then choose My Computer/Computer;

    8. Browse to

    C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2010

    - considering that BitDefender was installed on the default C partition;

    9. Double left click on the Supporttool.exe file - if you are using Vista or Windows 7, right click on the Supporttool application file and select Run as Administrator;

    10. Click on Next, wait a few minutes for the progress bar to complete and then click on Finish;

    11. Please also go to the desktop and send us the file that was created by the SupportTool. When you submit the log file you will receive an automatic answer confirming that we got the email. Send me as a PM the ticket ID from the email subject line.

    We will analyze the information you sent and then reply with a possible solution.

    Thank you,
