Bad Update Or....? - Solution Here: Http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=18789

I am NOT amused by this. My entire computer locked up, I lost several files that were running and unsaved because the whole thing slowed down to a crawl and all my programs stopped functioning. No wonder, with Shitdefender freezing vital system files left and right! Windows 7 was constantly busy repairing the damage it caused! This is unacceptable - I don't give a ###### about excuses - I paid for this to protect, not for it to wreck my PC!!! My license was about to run out and you can bet I'll move to Kapersky instead.

Hello all,
Please provide the exact detection name and the file location.
Also if possible please send me by PM a sample file.
Cris. The problem is only affecting users of the x64 versions of BitDefender.
A fix will be delivered via automatic updates as soon as possible.
Please disable the real time scanning feature until further notice.
We are sorry for the inconvenience. There is a "restore" option in the quarantine tab. You can restore all the false positive viruses that way (unless you set the default behavior to auto-delete... then I think you're out of luck).
The restore function works fine for me, although I have to disable the real time virus scanner for the files not to be re-detected quickly.
Also note that Windows automatically restores some of these files... if the file already exists, you shouldn't need to force an overwrite.
P.S. I'm annoyed as heck at this issue, too... Win7 x64 ultimate here... hope the fix comes soon and BD can apply it without thinking it is a virus.
All this ###### so far isn't working. None of it is. We can't access any of these "supposed fixes" at all.
Its really frustrating when even the basic system functions aren't working. As mentioned before regedit, cmd, task manager and all programs aren't working.
How do you expect us to fix anything now? BitDefender itself has been quarantined.0 -
I'm using Bitdefender Internet Security 2010. I have never seen any Quarantine tab or folder for this app. I really need to get things back to like they were 50 minutes ago. Can anyone advise?

Dude relax. F/Ps can happen with any & all antivirus applications.
It'll be fixed soon enough.
correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember there being a case where antivirus would delete essential windows related files and relegate everysingle running program as a trojan.
or the biggest irony of all, categorize itself as a trojan and delete itself.
there has to be some sort of compensation for the affected users.0 -
You claim it's been 24hrs yet it was only reported about an hour ago.
If you had this issue that long, why didn't you not report it earlier?
my system seemed to going unstable since yesterday with firefox getting wobbly often. The scan now button on my virus scan didnt work and neither did the manual version. I sent support an email mentioning it.0 -
dude I can't restore, please see attached!
I had that happen to me once. When I browsed to the folder and tried again, it seemed to work. Do you have antivirus disabled when you try to restore?0 -

I am still using the same PC that the F/Ps were reported on without anything deleted.
Quaranteened yes, but not deleted.
I am still scanning with Malwarebytes & it not finding anything.
If your BD id auto deleting files, you have it set somehow to do so.0 -
Get the same issues with Trojan.FakeAlert.5. BD 2010 Internet security, Vista 64. I disabled realtime protection and restored the quarantined items which are working.

You don't get it - if Bitdefender quarantined itself, it won't MATTER. It won't be possible to reset the files then. For me, it quarantined over 4000 files INCLUDING itself. FOUR. THOUSAND. FILES. I was lucky I found this forum topic before I rebooted. Seriously, we better get compensation for this - this is a **** up of major proportions.0 -
Take a look at how much people registered in the last 10 minutes or so and the people viewing the thread at the moment.
Its not just us there's probably hundreds of people having the same problem but unable to report it since they can't even open up an internet browser anymore.
I'm definitely switching to Kaspersky after this. Heard BitDefender was the best anti-virus program but I guess I was wrong.0 -
Same issue here. Win 7 x64, BD 2010. I updated about 2 hours back and now my PC is apparently a minefield. Good thing I didn't delete anything. Please bring out the corrective update as soon as possible. I just don't feel safe turning off Real-time Antivirus and using the Net. Thanks.

When they issue a new update, there's no reason that you won't be able to un-quarantine those files after.0 -
Bitdefender went crazy... started to quarantine every file. Before I woke up and disabled the real time protection my whole system was screwed. Thanks a lot... Don't know why, but not every file is available in the quarantine so I can't restore it from there.
Now it needs a painful Windows reinstall. Nice time to spend a weekend0 -
When they issue a new update, there's no reason that you won't be able to un-quarantine those files after.
yer but if bd quarantined itself and now fails to run, are we still going to be able to update it and then fix it?0 -

You think you're in a bad situation?
Scanning my PC with BitDefender right now. 13490 files are infected and rising every second.
Almost everything is considered infected now.0 -

That's good, but how do I run BD while it is quarantined?0 -

it is doing it for over 50 files on my first computer, and 2 on my second, yes I try to point the browse option to the appropriate folder and it just does the same loop question over and over, really really frustrating..0 -
I'm going back to Norman Security Suite once this debacle has been resolved. It's far more intuitive and at least teh Quarantine area can be accessed, like Sophos, but seems to be missing in BD IS 2010

Hi, on the french forum also the problem is similar. I hope that they will quickly find a problem to this issue. For the moment, my PC with windows7 64bits is blocked in the starting phase (I rebooted the PC and now it doesn't start anymore, even in safe mode) " /> " /> " /> " />

When an update is released, they will most likely also update the weekly update exe file that you can run.
When BD is updated that way, you should be able to run BD as you could before.0 -
If this doesn't get fixed, a lawsuit is coming!!

I have 916 quaranteened and when i try to restore it says it cannot confirm the path. then when i go to browse and restore it where it was. it wont. Manually restoring 912 files would be a huge pain in the ######. if it worked. but it doesnt seem to want to restore all the little dll files. so yeah. fix this or compensate me because at this point my computer is ruined.0 -
Oh, what a mess. My BitDefender auto updated about an hour ago and it's been going ballistic since. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. Literally every file on my PC was being called a FakeAlert Trojan. Eventually my computer wouldn't even boot and I had to system restore.
It was bad enough that it was even calling taskmgr a Trojan!! You really need to fix this because you have hundreds of PCs that can be made unbootable!0 -

I appreciate your effort to help L.o.D. but everything you're mentioning right now is useless.
Nothings working. Why can't you get that through your thick skull?
The best solution is just to reformat and get a new anti-virus. Its hopeless now.0 -

Almost everything is considered infected now.
you wanna stop scanning now.
whole point is that when bd scans the files it'll quarantine them, causing the problem, if you stop it scanning, there'll be no problem and you can wait for the update.0 -

ineedhelp, you missed the fact when I stated that when they update their weekly update exe file, you should be able to fix bd with it.
Wait until an update is released.
There's no need for threats etc.0 -
Also gunna say, appreciate the help L.o.D.
but i think you wanna sit this one out and let the rage pass till theres a fix.0 -
unless they appease us users somehow, BitDefender can expect a subpoena coming to them for a class action lawsuit.

Ok, that's good news. Is anyone from BD on here that can tell us when this is ready and that it will do what L.o.D. says?0 -
Created a forum ID just to post here. I'm having the same problems. Windows 7 64-bit, BitDefender 2010. Every file is being flagged as infected with Trojan.FakeAlert.5 (not "s" as somebody posted earlier...it's the number five at the end).
I disabled realtime scanning, but there are a LOT of files already quarantined, including some BitDefender files.
A couple minutes ago, I noticed the screen flash that the BitDefender services were being brought down for an update, but then I got another popup box that it had identified more files as bad (I think more BitDefender files) and I don't think it actually updated.
Even if using the "Restore" button to restore quarantined files works, you can only do one at a time. What am I supposed to do, sit here for hours clicking one file at a time because of this FUBAR'd update? What about the people who have hundreds or thousands of files quarantined? Their systems are essentially useless.
I can understand companies making mistakes, but this goes far beyond a mistake. We paid for this product to protect our systems, not destroy them one file at a time, and then make it virtually impossible to restore to working condition.
Whether I continue to buy BitDefender products and recommend them to my friends (which now makes me look like a schmuck because of this problem) rests entirely on how they handle this massive screwup.0 -
So... will the disabling of Real Time protection stop the unscrewed PCs from screwing like mine? (I have around 10 friends that use BD 2010) I have to warn them!
Or they should uninstall completely?
Please BD Support i need quick response!0 -

Just stopped scanning. 17459 files infected. Thanks for the tip.Skynet is taking over the world!!!
Yea, pretty much. Its blocking all my files now.0 -
mhs, one of their lab people is keeping an eye on my thread.
So I must assume they are working hard on a fix right now.
Including their virus researcher, cristi.0 -
the same here - vista 64 and BD2009 IS. unfortunately i rebooted my computer
so bitdefender is not running any longer " />
is there any possibility to unquarantine my 58 files from
C:\ProgramData\BitDefender\Desktop\Quarantine to the original place?0 -

Same thing happened to me.
I recommended this program to most of my friends as well.
Now I'm getting constant messages on my cellphone asking me to fix it.0 -
anyone know how to recover quarantined files when your bd has been quarantined itself?

RE: "I am NOT amused by this".
I have the very same problem.
Bit-defender has just killed my main work computer, and is threatening to kill my second one.
Just when i booted my desktop computed, bit-defender started going haywire flagging every single file that was access as a "Tojan.FakeAlert.5". And I mean every single scanned file, even itself.
Bit-defender automatically killed or quarantined every single system file you can think of, every visual studio file that was accessed on startup, basically everything i need to work with.
My laptop had not been updated since two days ago, since it shutdown. Just as a test I turned it on, disabled the automatic protection, updated manually and then scanned manually, disabling any automatic actions.
Again, every single file was flagged, the count was at over 10000 files, I just stopped it when i was tired of waiting.
I also have malwarebytes and not a single file was detected.
And you surely know how mb is akin to false positives.
If I hadn't turned the auto av off, BOTH my work computers would now be KILLED.
I just had a talk with a friend of mine (she has my third license), and she just said her bd av started going haywire too.
I just told her to disable it and continue on with her life.
As a user already said, "I am NOT amused by this".
My computers are my "life bread" (as we say over here), and they just cannot die at the same time, especially by fault of the very product that is supposed to protect them.
So please, BitDefender team, what IS going on with the product, and, most importantly, what is going on with you quality control department?
I always had BitDefender in my most high regards, the product is fast and effective, the support is just great and friendly, but really, no product survives this on the long run.
I'd prefer to have Norton gobbling up my resources and having late updates than to see my computers blatantly destroyed.
Users can be a lot more tolerant to late but working updates than to fast but suicidal ones.
Please see what's going on ASAP.
And please kick the guy in your QCD, that one has really dropped the ball.0 -
I've used BitDefender for years and this is the first major quirk that I've come across, but it's a serious one. It quarantines literally every file on your PC (including BitDefender) and makes your computer unbootable.
The damage is already done and there's hundreds of peoples PCs that are potentially effected by this!!0 -
ineedhelp, like I said before, when the update is issued, use their weekly updater exe file.
I am almost sorry I started this thread now with all the threats etc now.0 -
Add me to the list of victims!
Windows 7 x64 Ultimate with Bitdefender IS 2010.
I have to add that Bitdefender has been nothing but trouble from the beginning. I stopped counting how many times I had to reinstall this program, submitted dumps made with the supporttool without getting any reaction from Bitdefender support etc. Now this.... Another day down the drain to get the system running properly again!
Because I was very satisfied with Bitdefender IS 2008, I clung on after even all the problems until now. I could live with Bitdefender shutting itself down every now and then without apparent reason.
This however is the last drop that spills the bucket. My trust in this piece of software has gone. Unless support comes up with a solution to restore my Windows setup and repairs this error in BD, I will revert to BD's competition for my PC security!

Same problem here. Managed to get BD turned off, but lots of files quarantined. I'm wondering, is it possible to reinstall BD without the recent update and still have the quarantined files available for restore? Any thoughts would be appreciated, I'd love to get my computer back to a working state quickly, as I'm sure would most of you.

Please stop posting further reports.
We are well aware of the large number of systems impacted by this flaw and posting more will only bury the posted information deeper.
Please see http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?s=&...ost&p=78984 for the current situation.
I'll post when the update hits automatic update.
Thank you0 -
Are you guys on Windows 7 64bit? The same thing is being posted on the German forum and that's the thing they have in common.
Yep, Windows 7 64bit - BitDefender detecting basically EVERY exe and dll as "Trojan.FakeAlert.5"
The result is everything gets moved to the quarantine, and the system is basically rendered useless.
NOTHING else finds any malware in these files; VirusTotal.com shows them as totally clean.
If I can't un-quarantine all these files, it's going to have to be a full restore. This is hideous.
--EDIT-- sorry, didn't see the note to stop reporting. Please delete this post if need be.0 -
ineedhelp, like I said before, when the update is issued, use their weekly updater exe file.
I am almost sorry I started this thread now with all the threats etc now.
How would I get this "Weekly Update .exe File"?
Do I download it from somewhere or is it already in BitDefender itself?
I'm just thinking it might quarantine the update as well.
And no ones really threatening you. Sorry if I came off that way but I don't know what else to do.0 -
I cannot believe this is the second time this year BD has screwed something up for me. First it was their toolbar. Now its this mess. I came to this thread too late now I cannot boot my laptop thanks to BD's **** up. Win 7 64 bit, just like so many others here.

Can someone really confirm that the problem is bitdefender itself and not a real trojan?

I didn't mean threatening me.
I meant the threats of lawsuits.
Voidkahn, I have been scanning with Malwarebytes which is a top malware scanner & it has not found anything.0 -

Same problem here. Windows 7 64-bit
About 3 dozen system file quarantined.
It first blocked my USB mouse driver. I went to "device manager" to check out driver info and the device manager application had been quarantined, got the error message "application not found". Services.msc also quarantined, and "application not found" error message when trying to open it.
I turned of realtime scan and restored the files in the quarantine which seemed to fix most issues.
now what?0
