  • Hello everyone,

As I said above, the update which fixes this detection is already on the update servers. So everyone who still has BitDefender Update working should already have received the fix.

For anyone else, where BD Update is not working anymore, BitDefender Support told me that a patch will be made available very soon which will restore BitDefender to it's working state, restore the quarantined files and fix the detection problem. A Knowledge Base article will also be available shortly. These are all the details I have so far.

    Cris.

Argh...I lost all my stuff, should of hit up the forums b4 i rebooted or reinstalled OS!!! <img class=" />

  • UH OHHHHH... (ref my earlier posts to get you guys to start notifying the Bitdefender-users out there.)

    The word is getting out.

    http://www.quickpwn.com/2010/03/trojan-fak...ender-2010.html

Expect tweets from some famous person on google news somewhere and most likely a facebook hate group.

(Not that that's a threat from me. I'm not famous. But my eight-ball indicated a definite 'maybe' when I asked your facebook future.)

  • One of my computers was damaged beyond the aid of system restore. I ran a repair from my installation media (Windows 7 64bit home premium) and was able to boot and log in again.

Still several thousand files in quarantine (waiting patiently for the promised manual update).

My two other computers were also affected, but luckily less harshly.

I tried running a rapiar from my installation media (Windows 7 64-bit) and it did not fix my problem. My computer boot_s up ok, but my display is really big (display drivers are prob. in quarentine) and I have no mouse or keyboard, or any USB functionality whatsoever, so I can not login (I am assuming my USB drivers are also in quarentine).

I woulod really like it if bitdefender addressed those of us who made the unfortunate mistake of rebooting the computer after the mass-quarentine that happened.

  • I was thinking about the possible ways in which BD could possible compensate us...

One of those were at least 30 days free of charge but then again... do we really want that? (=

I don't think something like this is going to happen again and we are at least prepared for something like this...

But what will Trojan.FakeAlert.6 do when it comes out? ;O

Or even worse, next BD update: Trojan.ClearAllHardDrives.5

    (=

this will never happen again.it was just a human error.we all do mistakes.a fix will be made soon for all users.

I think that BitDefender had to compensate all consumers who bought their product for another year free use of their current license key.

I had to reinstall my OS because I set up BitDefender to delete viruses! It took me around 4 hours to reinstall my programs!!! And all this because YOU ARE ******!

I will use other antivirus software!

I would like to know if they are going to have some way to fix my pc. I cant even boot up. It starts and I get this error. Login Process initialization failure. Process in itialization has failed. Please consult the event log for more detail.

So what can I do to fix this. I cant loose my data on this pc. Anyone think I should do a reinstall windows over my windows.

  • If I uninstall BD, are quarantined files are deleted??

    I couldn't find C:\ProgramData\BitDefender\Desktop\Quarantine foloder.

How much is BitDefender paying you to take up for them?

You are assuming that BD hired me. Tisk Tisk. It seems you do not know what they say about assuming so I will tell you: When you ''assume'' you make an ''*ss'' out of ''u'' (you) and ''me''.

I do not work for BitDefender, I'm only 16.

  • bdagent or something like that was missing on last reboot.

Also, the quarantined system files in:

    C:\Windows

    C:\Windows\System32

    etc. etc.

When I attempt to restore them, I am prompted to "Browse" for the file location and the alert indicates that the path cannot be found.

What??? Path to C:\Windows cannot be found?

    Ridiculous.

Also, after updating Bit Defender, then rebooting, now Bit Defender is no longer installed on my computer!!!

    Windows 7 Pro 32bit.

This seems like more than just a programming blunder in the latest update...I suspect someone working in the company...a disgruntled/malicious employee...deliberately injected this destructive code into the last update. He probably got passed up for a raise or didn't get his bonus this Spring and decided to retaliate...just my imagination, but it does happen.

I've been a BitDefender customer for 31 days exactly...and I made the move from ESET NOD32...perhaps it was a mistake.

Perhaps BD will give us a free year certificate to compensate for our inconvenience?

  • HUGE DAMAGE TO MY COMPUTER!!!!

AS A BUNCH OF WINDOWS DLL WERE DECLARED INFECTED AND QUARANTINED, WHILE RESTARTING THE COMPUTER THE OS (XP64) DIDN'T WORK.

NEED TO REINSTALL OS....DATA LOSS...FOR WHAT....FOR A STUPID CODER WHO RELEASED AN UPDATE WITHOUT TESTING IT ON HIS COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!

    GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT!!!

PS. BITDEFENDER SUPPOSED TO PROTECT OUR COMPUTERS FROM VIRUSES. CAN YOU RECOMMEND A PROGRAM TO PROTECT US FROM BITDEFENDER?

  • I would like to know if they are going to have some way to fix my pc. I cant even boot up. It starts and I get this error. Login Process initialization failure. Process in itialization has failed. Please consult the event log for more detail.

So what can I do to fix this. I cant loose my data on this pc. Anyone think I should do a reinstall windows over my windows.

try use a windows installation disk to repair your computer.boot from it and use system restore.

another way is F5 after restart and enter safe mode.

  • Yes, bit defender defender

  • Work-around: Okay, I am running Win7 - 64bit; and, here is a work-around. I made the assumption that the idiot that released the bad update has likely been suspended or fired: and, more important, I made the assumption that BitDefender is smart enough to have turned off the bad update by now. Do NOT delete anything. Here are the steps:

    • I UNclicked the box for real time protection (under the antivirus tab), just to make sure it would not get in the way.
    • Then, I UNinstalled BitDefender.
    • Then, I rebooted my machine.
    • Then, I RE-installed BitDefender.
    • Then, I input my registration number.
    • Then, I ran the BitDefender update.

All is well. So, it would appear that my assumptions were correct (i.e. the were smart enough to disable the bad update). Of course, this solution assumes that you own an official version of BitDefender. Basically, what you get (at the end of this work-around) is BitDefender withOUT the bad update. Best of luck.

  • try use a windows installation disk to repair your computer.boot from it and use system restore.

another way is F5 after restart and enter safe mode.

Safe mode wont work eather. Its left to just repairing my pc.

  • Please tell me how this will fix the problem when BitDefender itself has been quarantined?

Or when Automatic Updates are disabled and cannot be enabled AND Update Service is unavailable?

  • bdagent or something like that was missing on last reboot.

Also, the quarantined system files in:

The problem described in this thread is affecting 64bit systems. Are you sure that your system is 32bit? Because this problem shouldn't be affecting you, according to what was said until now.

  • (andre1990 @ Mar 20 2010, 10:21 PM) *

i hate people like you.....just shut up. We have all been affected badly, deal with it. I've lost lots, but it's one of those things that happens.

    Oh man....get a grip

I'm guessing you are working for BitDefender on here doing damage control.

How much are they paying you?

Sit down and shut up you p1ll0ck. Welcome to the club, we're all waiting for a final fix. Unlike you I've been sat here watching this thread since page 8 seeing person after person post the same questions while I wait patiently for a definitive answer from the ones who matter. Of course it ###### and there will no doubt be repurcussions but threats of lawsuits? That's what's wrong with society today, this compensation culture is fuelled by people like you.

Grow a pair and wait like everyone else.

  • Is there an ETA for the update? Been trying manual updates every 15mins for over an hour.....still stuck @7.30848

Is there a way to forcibly download the update? BD TS 2010 keeps reporting "No update available."

  • I'm on Vista 64-bit using bit defender 2008 i faced the same problem today it found about 35426 files infected with Trojan.Fakealert.5 i was  shocked , soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo worried and sad till i googled it and read that it is an error with bit defender itself here in the forum ... then i uninstalled the bit defender at all and everything is going well now thnx God. I'm from Egypt

  • EXACTLY!

There's still SOME time to help others avoid this fate. (However improbable it may be.)

I agree, it seems like a mistake was made - - OK - - fix it, let your customers know how to fix it before they ask you. A link on the front page of your website to connect us with documentation would be nice. And please, in the instructions on how to fix our computer systems, keep in mind that we are not all techies. Hopefully there will be extra technical support available at no cost for those who have more severe problems. Good Luck to All !

  • Is there a way to forcibly download the update? BD TS 2010 keeps reporting "No update available."

the update is made.the fix for restoring the quarantine will appear shortly.

try to restore the files from the BD quarantine and see if it works.

  • When I turned on my networked PC's this morning I was greeted on all of them with these same issues. WINDOWS 7 WOULD NOT BOOT UP. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO USE WINDOWS RECOVERY CD's...FIRST TRY TURNING OFF MODEM...NOT ROUTER.

I was able to sucessfully start WINDOWS 7 AFTER DOING THIS. THEN TURN ON MODEM. I have applied updates and rebooted and now I am getting an error of missing bdguictl.dll try re-installing program...NEW ISSUE. WTF!

  • the update seems to have stopped the alerts , now just need to know how to fix the quarentined files . Anyone have any ideas ?

    ==>> I'll make this Red... <<==

so maybe some Mod will find it in this pile.

I have the same problem that I have seen repeated on 23 pages here running BD 64 on Win7 64.

    1) I just did an Autoupdate about 10 minutes ago, and it says it was successful, but how do I know? Can a Moderator post the Virus definition info so we can see if we have what you say we need?

    2) After the update it did not restore the several hundred Quarentined Windows System, BD, and other files. When I try to restore them manually, I select all of the trojan.fakealert.5 affected files and click Restore. I get a confirmation message saying "The file xxxxxx already exists, so I want to Replace. Apply to All?" So, I click OK, and get an error message: "Failed to find the specified path. Please review the pervious operation and try again." So, it appears that BD did not restore all the files automatically? Or maybe the last update was not the 'fix'? But how do I know if ti was supposed to be the fix? (See #1 above)

    3) I think you should start a Locked thread where only Moderators can post reported issues and solutions and document the update inforation, ect.. Because I cannot keep up with this thread that now has probably 24 or 26 pages after I am typing this...

    Snacko out..

  • Or when Automatic Updates are disabled and cannot be enabled AND Update Service is unavailable?

Maybe wait for the bitdefender correction update to be downloaded with a zip file thanks to the hotline and install it with a usb key?

I'm afraid it will take a little while to settle.

However I guess the company should do that.

We are lucky to have at least two PCs and no automatic update on both...

I did not updated the computer with BD since yesterday, I'll wait a few days...

    Good luck

    L

  • ok...so the automatinc updater was developed and those lucky enough to have the automatic update feature enabled are supposed to be getting it...

1- How did it go for those that were able to update?

2- Did all of the items in quarantine were restored?

3- Are the systems operating the way they are supposed to?

Now for us that are screwed and cant be automatically updated....When the downloadable patch will be available??? It shouldnt take too long if the solution was created...or is this another mess up that is being tested with the now unlucky few that got an automatic update???

    What a croc of #######!!!!!

  • Me too. I was running XP64 on my laptop and suddenly started getting constant notices from BD that Trojan Fakealert 5 was trying to hijack my system. I couldn't close Firefox and eventually had to hard reset my computer. I rebooted to safe mode and ran a system scan. BD discovered over 10,000 infected files! BD couldn't disinfect, couldn't delete and couldn't quarantine. When I restarted again, none of my applications would function and BD no longer worked either. My partition is hosed. Really kind of ######. Pretty unacceptable. I've lost everything on my computer.

  • Sit down and shut up you p1ll0ck. Welcome to the club, we're all waiting for a final fix. I agree on the fact that a lawsuit might be too much, but only for the ones who could fix their computers and didn't loss so much that it even means loss of money.

There is nothing wrong with this type of "compensation society" because this is what makes companies put their stuff together and work better so that they won't have to deal with lawsuits and such.

  • Yes. I use 64-bit Windows 7.

    From Spain.

Technical support is missing in weekend. <img class=" />

I disabled the antivirus and real-time protection :(

    I restored everything that has enabled me to Bitdefender c ***** <img class=" />

I spent several programs and I detected nothing.

It's absurd. Pay the license more expensive and the same computer program destroys me to death. Who compensates me for the inconvenience and loss of these? My computer is vital for my work.

I do not know if it will work I've done. I dare not turn off the computer for fear I die.

If active the Bitdefender, my computer dies.

If not, I am defenseless against any attack. :(

Why pay a license? (total security)

A fix for the update system will be posted to our KB soon and that should repair the update system as to allow you to repair BitDefender and restore your files from quarantine.

Please bear a little longer. A revert has been uploaded and some of the users have already received it.

Here's to hoping this post doesn't get buried before five users read it.

    Dear Customer Service,

Instead of "hoping" that your vague yet important announcements don't get buried in the forum, why notpost them on your WEBSITE?! Genius! It should not be this difficult to find the help you need. Something this important should be prominently displayed on the company website and sent out via email alert. Please step up and provide information that is useful and ACCESSIBLE!

  • What a major technical and PR screw-up, I can't think of a comparable damaging catastrophe for supposedly protected computers in 30 years of IT history. And this has nothing to do with false positives.

This thread alone is epic, I started reading it when it was 8 pages long, and finished now at 20 pages, there was 1 to 2 more pages by the time I finished reading one.

This thread is actually not very helpful and shows its limitations, good luck finding the solution to your problem in its dozens of pages.

There should be a dedicated technical support thread format, with buttons such as "I also need an answer" and the possibility to flag a comment as "Best answer", like in other professional technical support forums, so you can get notified of answers by email.

I am lucky I didn't have my computer running overnight (just finished downloading Doctor Who's 170GB torrent 2 days ago).

It managed to quarantine a few files before auto-updating to revert the bad update before I could even read the solution(s) here.

Funny I am listening to "Exterminate, regenerate" at the same time, sounds appropriate... (http://charliemcdonnell.com/music/)

The Restore feature for quarantined items should be improved, too many customers seem to think they have to restore file by file.

The first column should be the usual checkbox to show items are selectable, and there should be the usual Select all/Select none checkbox on top. Also, the management of files quarantined several times (therefore with only one quarantine copy) is buggy, the second and next occurrences of the quarantined file should not appear with an error box "this file does not exist" since it is by design. If that's what happening (seems so, it happens to every single customer.)

I really expect BD to explain thoroughly what happened (and why x64 only), how they are making sure it won't happen again, confirm they do deploy autoupdates internally before their customers, and apologize with profusion about this unique debacle (a security product quarantining files to a point where the operating system cannot be salvaged or rebooted.) The cost of this bug is at least in the dozens of $ millions, not even counting the lost hours of personal life. Please show you have a care, BD people.

And I'll be waiting for my "I survived Trojan.FakeAlert.5" t-shirt.

  • Work-around: Okay, I am running Win7 - 64bit; and, here is a work-around. My system is a huge mess, i cannot run BitDefender (BitDefender Security Service vsserv.exe is not available), i cannot run the latest update pointed before ("An Error ocurred installling the package. Windows Installer returned '1652') and i have my system running in safe mode which was the only way to stop bitdefender.

  • I have a lot in quarantine but there is no count. How do you know how many?

  • This may be a stupid question, but should I shut down my computer or will that simply risk my not being able to start Windows again? Is there anything I should be doing to protect my computer? Earlier, I had to do a system restore from safe mode just so I could get past the Master Password from my Windows 7 start page--BitDefender even allowed my startup screen to fail. This is an extraordinary screw up. Extraordinary!

Quick question - if I follow your work around what happens to the files that have been dumped into quarantine? Will they be deleted or will they be fine and back in their proper place when I reinstall Bit Defender?

i advice not to restart you`re pc and wait for the patch that automatically restores the quarantined items.

    good luck.

  • which engine version is the last and reliable ?

  • Maybe I missed one, but I've only seen ONE official post from an official BD representative, and an awful lot that act like they are, but are not.

We need to hear from BD here please. Each of us has a big problem here, we know that. Please start an official thread. Tell us what to do. AND LOCK IT, so it doesn't get overrun by people who paid $29, therefore, the world owes them everything.

For the first time all morning my hard drive has gone silent. ...I don't know if this is good or bad.

I can't update, and I can't open BD to even get to quarantine files to see what is going on. I can't open it to shut it off, and I can't stop it from task manager. It's on autopilot, and doing whatever it wants.

Please, BIT DEFENDER, tell us what to do. Add links, and instructions, and put it on the front page, and lock it!

  • IT blocked and quarantined internet explorer also! Now i am using another pc and of course without a bitdefender security software. I turned game mode on and turned it of and the alerts didn't show up anymore! Is there anyone else who tried that?

OK. For the latecomers. I was on page one when this started and had 2 PCs impacted.

The first I one finger soluted and I started again in Safemode. No harm done.

The second I waited for the resolution from Bitdefender which did not work for me. So I one fingered this one too and restarted in safe mode. Again no harm done. This was with 1300 files in quarantine. I wish I hadn't waited.

Oh, and make sure your internet connection is disconnected before the saluting. Doddle.

So from my experience do not let Windows try to fix itself as some seem to have tried as this only digs a deeper hole. Safe mode is the way forward.

IMO if you have restore points set for Windows there shouldn't have been too much impact. Immediate cost to me is about £1,000 and I think I've saved the contract since the third party has been following the saga on here. I have already replaced Bitdefender and gone back to my tried and tested vendor, Norman. I will be looking for a refund of the Bitdefender license as a start.
