  • Carmen, I need to know if my engine 7.30848 is the safe one, or should I wait for the patch?

My windows is ok, I disabled the real time scan before it could damage my computer.

Yes, I updated and am rid of the FakeAlert.5 I try to restore from quarantine but it's alot of files and half of them are giving me the could not find file location message. So, I'm just going to wait for the patch and see if it will sort it out for me.

BD staff plzz plzz test the patch before release.

I am in the same situation.

I have looked for some of the files manually, though, and they are there already, no need to restore. Everything seems to run normally, although the quarantine tells me it still has files trapped.

I guess windows recreated those files if they are already in place. I won't delete the ones in the quarantine, though.

See what goes on with the patch.

  • What I'd like to know is why is it called fake alert 5? It does not exist anywhere else besides here. Anyone know why it's called that?

  • Carmen, I need to know if my engine 7.30848 is the safe one, or should I wait for the patch?

The faulty update has been pulled off the servers some time ago already, you can update, the engine you are using is fine.

  • Lol It shouldn't have been I'm not very concerned what or why it was called anything at all.

It seems most have gone to bed to see what becomes of this tomorrow at any rate.

  • So i am stuck.

I can't use any audio appplications at all...........

You just ruined my day completely. thx. a. lot.

@mastuerzo66: Yes, the 7.30848 engine is the safe one. BitDefender will not detect False positives on your system anymore.

@Midnight Rain: If the BitDefender update service is running after a restart it will automatically replace the corrupted and missing files.

@Lost_n_Confused: I am afraid you will have to reinstall these applications. We are very sorry for this inconvenience.

  • I had over 23000 files infected before i finally got information on that it was a false positive. I had done 2 scans and tried to resolve threats in according standard procedure recommended by Bit Defender. Luckily only 20 files where deleted!

I got information in time before reboot tho and I'm now in a hotel room in Hong Kong that i have to leave soon and i don't know if i can turn my CPU off. With about 10000 files in quarantine and a lot of them system files it seems pretty likely it wont come back up. I doubt i have any system restore files on this laptop that will work. And i no longer have the installation CD.

With 10000 files in quarantine it is impossible to manually restore them, in fact its a miracle that i still can do anything.(i was able to restore mozilla firefox). In fact most of the files cant be manually restored they just start running in a loop where they continously want you to define their location.

I need to know if i can shut down the computer, and if not i need to know when the patch will be put back up.

Funny that Bit Defender is the only Trojan I have encounter in my, soon to be, finished 365 day license(oh and by the way, what if my license ends before you release the patch(license gone tomorrow???).. In fact the anti-virus system bought from you is the most aggressive, destructive and non repairable virus I've ever come across.

Guys you are epic fail. sry sry.

  • I think they knwo their mistake by now.It does interest me to know how this came to be.It seems there would've been less damage if it had been an actual trojan in the update rather than detecting EVERYTHING as a false positive..

Reinstall? you want me to reinstall?

I can't reinstall. This software deleted things that were part of my computer, that came with the computer when I bought it.

Then I don't know what this software deleted.

And I have tried to reinstall one program, and that failed.

This is more than an inconvenience. This is a permanent problem.

BitDefender's malfunction has cost me the capability of my laptop.

saying I am mad, is an understatement.

  • Just watching the tweets and waiting like everyone else. http://twitter.com/bitdefender

FWIW, ...I still can't get BD back online and working, and just about every program that came with W7 can't be found, and the shortcuts are all dead, plus a lot of other things. I have the Win 7 discs sitting here waiting to see if I need to use them, or not. ...That is what is so aggravating here, we don't have a fix, we don't know if the fix will work when it does come out, and if we wait for a fix and wind up re-loading Win 7 anyway, it will be very maddening knowing we could have started the process 10 hours ago. Instead, we may be spending another day or two at this.

I couldn't help but notice an irony in the BitDefender company mantra shown here.... Top of the page, front and center... http://news.bitdefender.com/NW1431-en--Tro...date-issue.html

What you test is what you get.

Now there is an ironic truth... lol

I can't believe I've lost the entire day, and probably the entire weekend over this.

...Never buy a car built on a Friday...

  • Lost N Confused you are on your own - BD couldn't care less as long as they get their money - How many people do you think will really add this into their anti-virus reviews in the future. It will pass and they know it, so they lose some customers - no biggy for them. They just fix it quick and move on while a crap load of us are screwed with no compensation.

I'll promise you one thing, I'll make sure of it that this doesn't get covered up and forgotten.

Bitdefender... the most lethal virus I've had in a long time. An epic fail - one I haven't seen in the decades I've worked on computers

Has anyone been compensated in the least yet? I spent my day reinstalling the OS on 3 machines and still have a long way to go - luckily my office computers don't all run 64bit OS.

A refund on our subscription would be the very LEAST they could offer but figuring how many out there got screwed, I doubt they will offer anything and find some legal loophole. What they don't realize is that by dodging, they shoot themselves in the foot. This will be talk about all over the net for a long time to come. To neglect compensating us will only add insult to injury.

  • Here is the patch:

    Link to Patch

  • that patch is a hoax to me - in Win 7, I didn't get those options. It was boot up in Safe mode, Safe mode with networking or start windows normally. After booting into windows regardless of which option, I got some start up initialization error and windows hung. The option for people who got royally screwed is to reinstall EVERYTHING from scratch.

  • Here is the patch:

    Link to Patch

...Let's find out if it works! ....

    Here goes nothin" (fingers crossed)

  • Hello all,

We have launched the patch for restoring the quarantined files from BitDefender. Please access the False Positive on X64 systems and choose your operating system.

We would like to take advantage of this opportunity to convey our apologies in regards to the situation created.

Should you need any information please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Thank you.

  • Thanks Carmen but now that I fixed my problem, it's not information I need, it's compensation. Do you have any?

  • Ok. They are posting a solution for everyone who has a windows CD on the home page now... but what about those of us who have laptops that you have screwed up BD?!? What solution do you offer those of us who were never provided the windows disk to begin with?!?

    @BD Team

I think it would help if you pushed the message with the patch through the news channel service in BitDefender, as I'm not sure everyone reads this forum or even goes on the official website. Just my suggestion.

  • look on the bright side - it happened on Saturday - giving us all day Sunday to reinstall <img class=" />

they would get far worse press if it happened on a week day

  • Okay, so I now have my BD up and all but my problem is: is it safe for me to turn RTP on with engine version 7.30847? Because I am stuck on that version. No matter how much I try to upgrade it, manually and auto, it will not upgrade. That was a problem even before I used the patch, the patch didn't fix it.

  • "Due to a recent update for Windows 64-bit systems it is possible that BitDefender detects several Windows and BitDefender files as infected with Trojan.FakeAlert.5 ."

    Nicely worded...

    http://www.bitdefender.com/site/KnowledgeBase/consumer/#639

  • Nope.

It's not working here at all.

OK.... So, it appears you have given us a Zip file to work with. Apparently my ability to open and use Zip files has also been destroyed and quarantined, which renders the patch useless.

So now what? How about including a Zip file extractor with the Zip file, since our entire operating systems have also been destroyed by this mess.

Windows 7 is so awesome, finally, nothing ever makes it fail, ever. This BD mess has rendered it useless.

    Am I missing something here?

I had the same problem because I was trying to open with Firefox as my browser. I switched to Explorer and got it open just fine. Hope that works for you too.

Those directions on the "Saving files onto a memory stick with the BitDefender Rescue CD" page list using a removable memory stick via USB to save on to. Can you use an external hard drive instead of a memory stick?

Cant install the patch, files are missing...cant install Bit Defender as there are still files/registry entries left (after using the uninstall tool).

  • Run it as Administrator.

Doesn't make a difference still same error.

    siighhh

  • I downloaded WinZip (unprotected mind you) installed it, then ran the patch ....and got... "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142) Click OK to close the applicatoin... So the patch will not work.

Time to reload and repair windows with the MS discs....

You guys had your shot.... My patience for this just ran out. I'll fix my system myself.

I hope the rush to get to the bar on Friday night was worth it for your programmers that pressed enter, and released this disaster on us.

ALSO, WHEN I UPDATE BD, IT SAYS IT CAN'T UPDATE BECAUSE I AM NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET EVEN THOUGH I AM CONNECTED. WHAT THE ######!!????!!?

Not really, honestly.I'm thinking if I have to reformat I won't be reinstalling BD ever again and just take it as a loss of $30 and a partition and all my many gigabytes of games and mods and music and videos and you know all that crap.

Who would expect thier virus "protection" would be the cause to lose you whole OS.Who needs a virus when you have BitDefender?

  • Are you surprised after this enoch? lol

    Still here... :)

We're a bit slow as we're trying to catch up with the number of posts and some of the issues that remained unanswered so far. So please bear with us, we did not leave you here alone.

If you performed the update and successfully rebooted your system, everything should be just fine. Try, however, to test your applications (see if they work) before emptying the quarantine. And to be super-safe you can try to backup the quarantine for a couple of weeks, in order to have time to check everything.

Great. And where do I go to make that hapen without having to wait 3 weeks for a reasonable response unlike the issue I have had with your backup for 4 weeks now?

  • I did that and did not receive any error except it said, "last update installed successfully." And still remained 7.30843.

This is my problem & process:

    When FakeAlert popped.

    1. I immediately stopped it & applied patch from here a few hours ago. http://www.bitdefender.com/site/view/Deskt...ts-Updates.html

    2. I then managed to restore some Bitdefender files from quarantine. This allowed me to access Bitdefender Updates & I updated to latest version. 9 to 10 files are still trapped in quarantine.

    3. I waited for this latest quarantine patch "patch_64b_update_issue". However on trying to patch, it says, previous installation not completed. Hence I reboot to complete it.

    4. On reboot, Bitdefender Update becomes not accessible. "patch_64b_update_issue" cannot be applied because "bdutils.dll" is missing. When I look at Quarantine, it only shows 2 remaining files trapped in quarantine. What happened to the rest?

    Now what do I do?

PS: Same issue as this guy here but no one bothered to reply to him http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=18825

  • The patch does work. Bit Defender is working again. But the firewall doesn't seem to be working. It won't let me turn it on and says 'failed' when I try to fix it.

My programs still don't work. I'll probably reinstall all of them in the morning. At least we know BitDefender works somewhat well under pressure. But very unprofessional. A lot of your recent help pages for this issue have a lot of spelling mistakes. Anyway, thanks for the patch.

  • I'm under windows 7 64 bit. Before the patch my system was able to boot with some errors.

But after the patch was applied. System Blue Scree of Death and system reboot. I R%$)(/ patch

don't work for me. 2 of my pc was down since 12 hours now. So now cool sunday to reinstall
