But that doesn't explain that my computer (Vista x64 and Bitdefender IS 2009) was struck by this false positive thing yesterday, and I was still able to boot into it multiple times this morning (albeit I got some errors). Then I ran the patch and now I am getting a BSOD on normal boot, I can still boot into safe mode though...


    So it seems that it was destructive in my case....

    He was AFFECTED like everyone else who had a 64 bit system.


    The problem was he applied the patch provided by Bitdefender and now he can't boot normally... which he could before the patch.


    Bitdefender failed to say that the patch was for the 2010 versions.


    I can't install the patch myself but since the computer is working, I'm not going to install it and just leave the files on the quarantine...

    Yes, thank you, I know that it was affected because it it a 64bit OS. I meant that I think that the patch damaged my computer. Because my computer booted before applying the patch but gave a BSOD after.

    Anyway, this is only possible because Bit defender screwed up and so far hasn't come with a solution that works for everyone...

  • Since I was unable to get Startup Repair to work, I selected the Advanced link at the bottom of the window and did a system restore. It worked and I was able to boot ok. I then ran the patch for bootable computer on their website and am now BidDefender Update Now. I will get back if this works. Good Luck and hang in there.


    It appears things are back to normal. My solution sequence from black screen startup is below:


    1. Can't Startup, so I ran Startup Repair 5 times.


    2. Startup Repair did not work, so I clicked the Advanced ... link at bottom of Startup Repair window and selected System Restore. Luckily I had a restore point in the somewhat recent past.


    3. Once System Restore finalized and rebooted the OS opened (a few errors reported but still got home screen).


    4. Ran BitDefender patch (for "bootable" computer) as administrator and then rebooted computer.


    5. After reboot, ran BitDefender update (took awhile because of system restore). Once finished I rebooted again (as requested by BD).


    6. After this reboot I ran BD Update again (update was 312kb). Did one final reboot and presto. Back to normal.


    Although everything seems to be working fine at the moment, I do still have tons of files in the quarantine, but windows has already restored them in the appropriate place. I won't delete them until I am sure I don't still need them. Hope this works for you.

    The applications that I noticed right away were Windows Accessories applications like calc.exe, cmd.exe, charmap,exe, etc. I eventually changed the path for these from %windir%\System32\******.exe to %windir%\SysWOW64\******.exe. This is a tedious fix, but it works. I am guessing that the equivalent applications in the System32 directory are corrupted.


    I am wondering how many other applications and helper applications were affected. Unfortunately, I won't know until I run more programs that require these affected files.


    I had hoped that the patch would completely undo the changes by BitDefender, not "sort-of" fix the problem.


    At least my system boot_s though!

    As I stated previously, I cannot comment on the patch bit because I am not using an older BD!


    I got his by the bug too which is why I made this thread to begin with!


    But I never rebooted til this morning.


    I never ONCE said that this was normal.


    The thing I don't understand is why people restarted their machines in the first place?


    I'm not the one that has ever said people need to get over the issue either!

    My quarantine still has 10k+ files in it.

  • Ok here is what I did. I am on Windows 7 64. I will call myself lucky (or prepared, depending on your viewpoint:) ) I have backups that run in the background daily, which I recommend to everyone of course.....


    Anyway, since I didn't have much to lose starting from scratch, I put in my windows 7 install disk and just did a full reinstall (NOT repair). Took a little under 55 minutes total. Expecting to have to restore my backups, I was surprised to see that all my files were intact and on the drive. Seems that the Windows 7 new install detected that there was already a windows install there and backed up that directory and installed a new one. Most of my program files such as Office, quicken, turbo tax, a sundry of games, were all still there. So far in testing, everything seems to be working ok.


    I had always thought a full reinstall erased everything, but it didnt on my end. So just a thought on a possible soultion....


    Recap


    #1. Reinstall Windows


    #2. Don't choose format on reinstall


    #3. After installation complete, check to see if everything is working


    #4. Install Mcafee...(oops! can I say that here!?)


    hope this solution helps someone....took me 55 minutes total from CD boot to restart with new install

  • @misterTTT: you first need to disable the Real time protection service ( BitDefender Virus Shield ) , restart the computer AGAIN in safe mode then run the patch. Afterwords, you do NOT yet restart the Virus shield service, make sure first that you have the correct engine version ending in *848.


    @ Dany M.: How can I see which engine version it is, when Virus shield service (and thus the GUI) is disabled? The BitDefender services don't respond then.

  • Hello, I have question. I applied the patch and it seems to worked. Which is good. This might have already been addressed, but with so many pages of posts, I am afraid I will not find the answer.


    I am going through my quarantined files in Bit Defended and clicking on them to restore them. When it says that the file already exsists and I don't need to restore it, can I just delete it?


    If I can delete the files that are not needed it will make looking at things in the quarantined folder a lot easier.


    So if the files there are not needed by my system to run anymore, CAN they be deleted without causeing harm to my pc?

    I am using PCSecurity Shield Deluxe 2010 (PCSSD) and have the Trojan.fakealert.5 problem on my 64 bit Win 7 ThinkPad on 11,000+ files. This av software must use bitdefender. Anyone know how to fix this problem in PCSSD??? I don't dare do anything. Will ThinkVantage help? All my files are backed up offsite.

    I faced the same problem with my laptop (Win 7 X64 & BD 2010), I downloaded the patch but I couldn't run it, I restarted & couldn't run both the patch & BD.


    I restarted in safe mode & I could run the patch then restarted & update BD & everything is back to normal now.

  • @BitDee: The error you posted is related to BitDefender only. If your Operating System is working properly it's safe to repair / reinstall BitDefender. I did not understood to what missing drivers are you referring to so please provide me with more details - if possible screenshots of the error messages you receive.


    @Dogman: I need the names of those programs please. Also please tell me if you still have files that are in Quarantine AFTER the patch was used.

    @_Chris_: Please make a System restore to a previous time in Safe Mode. The BSOD should be resolved. As I have already mentioned , the current patch is only for the 2010 version. If you don't have any files quarantined then feel free to re-install BitDefender 2009 or upgrade and use the 2010 version.

  • I was getting help from Carmen last night but she appears to be off now. When I rebooted my system (W7 64bit), both SECCENTRE and BDAGENT could not be started because the txmlutil.dll file was missing. Carmen gave me access to a zip file to extract the file to the C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\BITDEFENDER\BITDEFENDER UPDATE SERVICE folder. When I tried, it said that another one existed which was actually newer. I decided to proceed (I had to do it in SAFEMODE). When I reboot, I get the same error message. I must be missing a step. The file doesn't exist in the C:\PROGRAM FILES\BITDEFENDER\BITDEFENDER 2010 folder (like other dll's in the UPDATE SERVICE folder).


    Please help me. Shoudl I be putting this request somewhere else. I already PM'd DanyBoy and got no response).

  • I know many of you had the same problem I did in which BitDefender ended up quarantining itself and everything that had to do with Windows.


    I used a System Recovery and went back to March 10th. Everything is perfect now. Even programs that didn't have to do with Windows are back in working order.


    How I did it:


    1. Turn off computer (not restart)


    2. When the computer starts up and the manufacturer logo appears, immediately start pressing F8 rapidly.


    3. Eventually, you will get an Advanced Start Up screen. Choose 'System Recovery' or a variation of that. (Usually the first choice)


    4. Only choose 'System Restore' on the next menu.


    5. Role back to a few days before this happened. (Like I said, I chose March 10th.)


    6. Allow for the program to fix and then do what it says, such as press okay, etc.


    7. Allow for the computer to turn on by itself and go into Windows. Log onto your profile and a message should appear telling you the System Restore was successful.


    At first everything might look the same, but it definitely worked. For example, my Command Prompt picture on start wouldn't show up but when clicked, it worked. Same with all other programs such as NetBeans, Windows Live, Photoshop CS4, Paint, etc.


    Definitely a good fix.

    In other words, after bitdefender stops working due to flagging itself as a virus, if you try to re-install, you are recommended by the software to uninstall, then re-install; if you follow this advice, all of you quarantined files are deleted. No patch fix etc will get you out of jail.


    Well at least I don't need to waste for time trying to recover my data.....

    Is it possible to copy the quarantine files from the corrupted Bitdefender.. Reinstall and Recopy the quarantine files to the correct directory.


    And launch the Patch to replace the files?

    Thanks for the reply. And I know you already said that this patch is only for 2010. You keep saying that. And you say that it does not cause any damage if you use 2009 or 2008 editions of bitdefender and apply the patch, where I disagree with you because I think my system was damaged by the patch as I explained before and before. And yes I also think that this was because I installed a 2010 patch over my 2009 edition. So I completely agree with you there.


    Considering all the above I think that it is unacceptable that there is no mention of the fact that this is a patch ONLY for bitdefender 2010 on any of the sites I previously mentioned.     In my opinion the error with the false positive was a mistake that can happen to anyone, just bad luck. Not mentioning that the update is only for 2010 editions of Bitdefender is in my believe a sign of ignorance, not taking the problem seriously and frankly very poor customer support.

  • Guys, like I've said before, the patch is really unnecessary if you can get into the System Recovery mode of your Windows.


    Just use the F8 method. And yes, all Quarantined files will be back.

    I had the same prob , but now i can boot back in my windows.


    I wrote it with a bigger letter size so more people will read it.

  • @enoch0o: Would it be possible to provide us with the entire error message you are receiving? It should sound like this:


    Livesrv.exe - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point XXXXXXXX could not be located in the dynamic link library YYYYYYY.dll


    and in this way we will be able to determine the .dll file which caused the issue.

    When I double click a picture I get this RunDLL error


    "There was a problem starting C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll"


    and underneath that it says...


    " C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll is not a valid Win32 application"


    Funny thing is... if I open a picture in Thunderbird application it opens the okay so it looks like it's only affecting the My Documents section. If anyone knows of a way to fix this, that would be awesome...

    Check your quarantine files, there is a line there with the "photoviewer.dll"... try to restore it.

    Sorry, no such luck. It's not there :( I've restored all the quarantine files that BD let me restore.

    thats what i already did several times... first time it told me its repaired, restarted and the boot screen told me that the bootmanager is missing... did it one more time, told me its repaired once again, restarted and it was like before - system couldn't boot, but no more warning of missing bootmngr.


    so i did it again and now the tool told me that everything is ok and there is nothing to repair... but when i start the system the startuprepair still launches, telling me that windows is not able to boot.


    tried the cd-repair around 5 times after this again without any results...


    and now i tried it once again, results the same - nothing new...


    same as i told, the only thing i can do is launching the cmd.exe


    and @BitDee, i really thought about this, but as long as there is hope to fix it another way- im really busy and i think this wouldn't be done in a matter of minutes ;)

    You may need to have your options set to see hidden files...

    Lucky... Yes, I fully agree w/ that statement, I just didn't want to say it because that would be "jinxing" myself, <img class=" /> I'll give that link a try, I haven't tried any restore points as well as repairing w/ my DVD yet but that will be my second option.


    I'll let you guys know if any of these work.

    is it for 2010 versions only or for all versions there is nothing on the web site to make it clear to users.

    - For all users receiving the error related with bdutils.dll I would like to announce that a new version of the 2010 patch will be release that will resolve it ! I will keep you posted on this topic and provide you with the download link as soon as it will be ready.


    - For all users that can not click on the NEXT button when running the Patch I would like to announce that the issue will be also resolved with the new patch version.


    @Biomechman: the Quarantine folder on Windows 7 is at this location: C:\ProgramData\BitDefender\Desktop\Quarantine\ OR


    C:\Users\All Users\BitDefender\Desktop\Quarantine

    I haven't tried it myself but it should be


    C:\Users\===YOUR USER NAME ===\AppData\Roaming\BitDefender\


    You may need to have your options set to see hidden files...


    One of the mods stated earlier that it would be in the desktop folder within that Bitdefender folder.


    Should be, but I can't find one.


    Maybe it doesn't exist when the list is empty?

    I have downloaded the bdutils.dll file, unblocked it, and it is in c:\program files\ commonfiles\theshielddeluxe\theshielddeluxeupdateservice but the patch program doesn't see it? What to do?
