  • @THEPAPA: The operating system is also restoring some of the files, therefore if the files are already restored you will not be able to restore them from the BitDefender Quarantine. Please check if the files exist in the specified locations and if they are skip them and try to restore the rest o them.

@quangdang: In this moment, if the patch completed successfully the only files you should see in the Quarantine should be files which are already resorted by your operating system and the patch was not able to restore them because they already exist.

You can double check if you can find the files in your computer just to make sure and if this is the case you can delete them.

  • Carmen,

Thanks for your reply but be very specific on the reply for the following questions

    1. There are hundreds (or thousands) of files in my quarantine. Should I go one by one in their location?

    2. If I find one file in the respective location, Should I delete it from the quarantine folder?

    3. What if there are pending files in the quarantine that are not in the original location?

Please let me know about it.

Hours ago, I saw someone posting that you will do a 2008 patch. Is that realistic? Or should I follow your recommendations.

    Thanks,

Thanks Carmen it's ok, it seems that all progs are working now. You are the first one from the BD team who answered me since saturday (in this topic + e-mail to support).

  • Hi,

Please keep focus on a bootable solution. I have 2 pc's which are in a never ending "System Repair" mode. The second one happened when I tried the patch and it asked for a reboot :(

@THEPAPA: You could try to select all the files from the Quarantine list using CTRL+A from your keyboard -> when you receive the message that the file already exists skip it and go to the next one.

We will also release a patch for the 2008 products. It is now under testing and we will let you know when it is ready.

@quangdang: You are welcome. I am very glad to here that all the programs are working now on your computer. Please let us know if we can assist you with anything else. Once again we apologize for the delay of our answer.

@aqua-plane: We are taking your request in consideration but unfortunately I am not able to tell you right now if we will be able to provide you with a bootable solution.

  • A work-around for those whose windows system files were so badly damaged[deleted] that even windows 7 starup-repair itself couldn't work.

I have also posted this in another topic.First, I'd like to disclaim that the following suggestions are solely based on my own experience on my Win7 x64 laptop after bad BitDefender update. Please disregard this thread if you are an IT pro or have already known this work-around.I just want to share and help you guys who might have encountered the same problem as mine.

After my BDIS 2010 had been updated with the faulty update, windows systems files and many others were detected as "Trojan.Fakealert.5". I didn't realise it was due to the faulty update from BD. So, I restarted Windows and didn't have a chance to turn off the real-time protection of BD. The next time I restart my computer, I was still able to log into Windows but couldn't open BD while the BitDefender RTP was still treating my system files as virus.

Later, I noticed that windows LogonUI.exe and other files were being quarantined, too. When I restarted my computer again, I could't even type my password to log into Windows. It said "The parameter is incorrect" or something like that. Things had gone worse and worse and some time later, the logon screen wasn't displayed at all. Instead, only a box with "Windows Logon Initiation Process Failed" or so appeared.

Then, the next time and thereafter I ran windows startup repair from my Win7 DVD, there was a persistent error while trying to repair the windows partition. I also tried to do system restore but it said "The current version of windows is not compatible with the windows you are trying to restore" or something like that.

There I found this trick.( I don't know if it's already mentioned elsewhere)

-(1)When you are on system restore page, the start-up repair will automatically search for available Operating Systems on HDD, and then there should be an option called "Load Drivers" on the lower left of the page.

(2)Click it and an open-file dialog box will appear. There you can find your System Reserved Partition or a new partition in addition to your normal partitions and DVD drive.

(3)Open the System Reserved Partion or whatsoever and search for folder "Windows" and then find "System32" folder. Copy the entire folder by right-clicking on it and then go back to your Windows 7-installed partition, which should normally be C:\ drive.

(4)Then paste the system32 folder in the directory C:\Windows\.

(5)This will replace or copy original major windows system files. Then just close all dialog boxes and restart Windows.

(6)Your computer will be running again. At least, you'll be able to get into windows to download and apply the BD patch. Or at least, you'll be able to use windows start-up repair again to do repair all starup errors.

Anyhow, this is how I did to resurrect my Windows 7 back into operation. It took me half a day to figure this out and I was really frustrated. At first, I was really worried because I hadn't backed up my system and there were some important files for my school. I couldn't also use flash drives to back up my data as BitDefender had already quarantined the system files needed for USB drive. Anyway, this is all over and I can use my computer again though there are still some minor icon problems. I'll reformat my HDD and reinstall windows 7 after I have fully backed up my data. Now, I just wish that staff at BitDefender will try their best not to make the same mistake or similar ones again in the future. Please also share here if you know better way to solve the above problem. ^_^

N.B.(1) In step 3, if you want, you may try to copy and replace the whole folder "Windows" from the system reserved partition to C:\ partition.(I hadn't tested it and not sure what the consequences of doing this will be,though)

    (2) You can also plug in your flash drives and back up your important data and files using the trick mentioned in Step 3.( I tried this first when I found out that I can still copy and paste through windows "Load Drivers" option in windows start-up repair.

    Thanks,

@THEPAPA, I wonder if you were installing the very first patch which was released several hours after the outbreak. There is a new updated patch which will automatically restore most of the quarantined files. The second patch worked for me, at least. You can download it here BitDefender Patch :D

  • Carmen,

Thanks for prompt answers but please read very carefully my last requirement.

I know that I can go file by file, is this the only option you are offering me? For certain a thousand files.

Please review my previous post and reply in the same order. That will help me.

Also, are you guys having a 2008 patch? Yes or No? If positive, when.

My BD 2008 says that any update possibility is unavailable. What to do on that particular?

    Thanks again for the help.

  • Here is how I fixed my Win7Pro 64bit machine...in order:

    1. Opened BitDefender in Expert Mode

    2. Clicked on "Antivirus" tab

    3. Deselected the checkbox labeled "Real-time protection is enabled"

    4. Uninstalled BitDefender

    5. Downloaded programs which were quarantined (Firefox, BitDefender, VLC Media Player)

    6. Downloaded BitDefender patch

    7. Rebooted my machine

    8. Installed BitDefender (and other programs)

    9. Installed BitDefender Patch

    10. Rebooted my machine

    11. Opened a beer :D

I did not need to use system restore or repair with my Win7Pro 64bit DVD.

I simply disabled BD's "Real-time protection" and intuitively progressed through the 11 steps listed above.

    Step 11 was the most important <img class=" />

    I'm Using Bitdefender V10.

Everything worked perfectly until this morning.

Bitdefender has scanned every day and updated fine.

During the scan i never got a message that there were files that needed to be put in quarantine.

But this moring i couldn't receive or send any e-mails.

And about a hour later, i got the message that bitdefender services are no longer working (vvserv.exe) and the icon turned Gray.

Does this mean i got that "Flase Detection" problem or not?

Or has bitdefender just stopped the program to protect the user until they have a working update available?

Right mouse button on the gray icon just gives me the possibility to "update now", but no update comes through for the moment.

But every other program on my computer works (but i never turn my computer of, always to sleep mode)

very nice to tell that i just have to disable bitdefender to fix my system.

after the update, explorer.exe was blocked on the fly, i wanted to restore it, opened bitdefender and it got blocked too. so i tried the task manager and it got blocked too. my biggest mistake was to try to reboot then, loginui.exe got blocked too. I was unable to shut down my windows, so i used the reset-button, my windows was totally unable to boot as everything that was used to boot or to login to my system was blocked, same problem in save mode.

So my solution is very easy and works 100%:

    1. windows-dvd into the drive

    2. format c:\

    3. reinstall windows

    4. bitdefender-cd into the trash, i will never ever install that software again

after all this, i googled for this problem and finally found this here. it's funny to see some workarounds, as they all start with "boot your windows in save mode" or something like that - guys, that doesn't work if the system got ###### up by your software.

    Thanks,

  • @THEPAPA

To manually restore all files from quarantine you can highlight 1 file from the list and then press Ctrl+A

This will select all files from the list and press Restore afterward.

If you have a Windows disc, you can easily repair Windows.

All you have to do is to press Ctrl+R to open the Run box

Type in the following command: sfc /scannow and hit OK

  • @THEPAPA:

Yes, unfortunately this is the only solution we can provide you right now. We are currently trying to test the patch for the 2008 version but I am not able to provide you a time frame. Probably the livesrv.exe process responsible for the update process is also in Quarantine.

@Dragon Racing: This issue appeared only on the Operating Systems on 64 bits. Could you please tell us what operating system you are using?

Also, if you did not receive any message that BitDefender moved the files in Quarantine it means that your system is OK. Regarding the issue you are dealing with please reboot your computer. If you are receiving the same message try to use the Repair function from Start -> All programs -> BitDefender v10 -> Repair or Remove.

  • Still not up and running. I am about to take my comp in if you guys do not pay for the repair a lawsuit will be forthcoming because the customer care i have received has been horrendous at best....

  • @kevinh:

We have released a new version for the patch from this KB article. Could you please try again to download and run the patch on your computer? And please let us know if you are receiving an error message.

  • the patch works, bit defender stopped distroying computers. But here is the question, who is going to fix all the damage bitdefender did to our systems? i for one am going to loose everything i have installed on my computer, having to reinstall everything because of the sheer amount of DLL files that were auto deleted because of this, im not happy with the result and really just generally ###### that they seem to have so little accountability for a **** up this bad.

  • Thanks for the help ZeusTheComGod,

    Thanks,

@THEPAPA, My Windows 7 x64 Edition have BitDefender Total Security 2010. And so I used the patch for 2010. Before I installed the first patch, I had to reinstall winRAR (WinZip is ok too) in order to unzip the patch since exe and dll files for winRAR were also quarantined. The last time I rebooted Windows 7 after startup repair, the real-time protection of BitDefender was somehow disabled. That's why I was able to reinstall WinRAR. Otherwise, the BitDenfender RTM will still be detecting the installation files as virus!

After I installed the first patch, my computer conditions seemed to be improved though not completely. There are still hundreds of files in the BD quarantine folder. Only after the installation of seconde patch (which is the same but updated patch available on the BD KnowledgeBase#638), all the quarantined files were restored.(Actually, I don't know whether they are restored or deleted. I only noticed there were no quarantined files in the quarantine folder after the 2nd patch). Hope this helps. ^_^

If you are on Vista or Win7, don't do a format but just do a new install. It will save the previous install of everything to a windows.old folder on the same partition.

All your personal data etc will still be there.

Yes, you will have to reinstall some programs.

  • @Darius20: We are very sorry that you had to reinstall the operating system. In this moment our highest priority is to help everybody to get the computer up and running properly. Of course we are discussing about compensation - see Compensation For False-positive Of Trojan.fakealert.5? - but right now we cannot provide you with any specific information about this issue.

@L.O.D : Thanks for the advice but I think we understood the fact that every deleted item couldn't be restored. You was the first to create this post but I think that you don't really understand how frustrating is it to have to reinstall almost everything......... IMO I am really disapointed of the BD products, the activity monitor which come after every re-boot even when the option is deactivated, random crashes which implies re-boot and now this weekend mess....... So as a standard customer, I would like to highly trust in my AV and up to now free alternative (I installed free antivirus for friends who don't want to pay) gave me entire satisfaction but unfortunatly I can't say the same for BD which I paid for !!! And I want to say again this mess is stronger than any virus I saw up to now and it comes from my "highly trusted" antivirus........ What should I think about it ?????

  • @L.O.D : Thanks for the advice but I think we understood the fact that every deleted item couldn't be restored. You was the first to create this post but I think that you don't really understand how frustrating is it to have to reinstall almost everything........

Actually I do. I used Win7 when it first came out as beta. So I had many reinstalls from them til now.

But like I said, when you do a clean install, without a format, ALL files will still be saved without any personal data lost.

  • Wow, I can't believe there's been no fix for GameSafe/2009/2008 users.

BTW, how can the automatic update help if BD update service is broken? We need a patch.

  • @kringlan: First of all, please be informed that the files you are trying to restore already exist on your computer. Probably this is the reason why you are not able to restore them manually. If you can find some files on that Quarantine lists which you are not able to find on your computer please try to run the patch in Safemode.

Ok its almost 48hours since Bitdefender started destroying my system.

I have done something anyone would do, i have installed and trusted the warnings from my Anti-virus system. Not only that, i have followed all official recommendations and made absolutely sure that i only take advice official employees. I have also only applied your official patches(which has failed to load since bitdefender files were in quarantine).

After following the above tip. Sunday Afternoon, after waiting for a patch for 7hours while loosing business(since i was afraid i could not shut my computer down with all system files in quarantine). I believed i could turn my computer off since: "the files you are trying to restore already exist on your computer" and "try to run the patch in Safemode"(meaning i would have to reboot)

Needless to say that tip killed what little was left of my computer. As i stated in an earlier post its a laptop with no restore points and there was never a CD for re-installation(which above employee must have read).

I had to go out, buy a new operative system. Delete my entire C:drive. Spend this entire day on making it all work again(and tomorrow to finalize and install lost software). All in all i have had to spend USD300 on software, i have lost at least 2-3 days of work in files that had no backup(luckily i do regular backups) and another 2-3 working days restoring my computer.

You probably understand that i got a lot of other things to do than spend another 2 hours just writing about this. The reason is simple:

This is an absolutely unacceptable mistake and i will make absolutely sure that you do not get away with it.

I Pay you a lot of money to protect my computer, what i have received is a slow computer, network configuration issues, a number of false positives(living in china almost all local software is false positive and even stuff with Chinese characters in freaks bitdefender out at times) and now finally this...

Now let me take a moment to explain just exactly what this is to you who seem to think its kinda okay what has happened to you(no matter if your computer is beyond rescue or if you only got a real bad scare).

Your anti-virus software provider, who you pay money to protect your computer from Virus, just sent your computer one of the most aggressive and potent false-positive viruses that i have ever seen. Apparently they(who are experts in computer safety) have sent out a patch before even trying to run it on a 64bit system. They kept this patch online for a good 3 hours before even realizing something was wrong(rendering any sort of excuse by it being a simple mistake of an unfinished patch sound extremely fishy, and that excuse is still absolutely unforgivable).

When - after more than 12hours after infecting your computer - they finally send out a patch to fix it, it does not work for a lot of users. Again a premature patch, with more than 12 hours to work on and call in all the companies expertise worldwide they still cant figure out how to send along a patch to undo one of their software most basic functions - quarantine.

They still have not released patches that work for 2009 and 2008 users nor given them information that the patch would not work for them. Almost as if none of them even thought about the different versions of their own software.

Their customer support team and their responses in the forum is incoherent, random and often wrong. Its apparent that the company was absolutely dumbstruck without routines to handle this sort of crisis. Their support team gives out information that does not work for most users or in case(like mine) makes the situation 10 times worse.

It takes the CEO over 1,5 Days to give an official statement.

In short: the routines for patch releasing have unacceptable problems, the crisis handling is appalling, customer support lacks direction and knowledge, and the company in general comes off as not knowing its own product.

This is beyond fail... and worst is i know exactly how frustrating and hopeless it is to try to make everyone happy and get so much shiet and not being able to sleep for a couple of days... But this one is really too big to pass by.

  • I can't start BD Desktop Update Service in order to update the new patch. It says bad request or something.Any help?

RUN RUN as fast as you can. Any company that does something like this will surely make another mistake. Their is no justification for this big of a mistake it just reeks of bad management which cannot be solved and will continue.

Even if I try to reinstall now it says my license key that I purchased a couple months ago is invalid. Why would that happen?

  • @kevinh: I am sorry you think that way. We will make the best we can to learn from this mistake and improve our product and support.

  • @L.o.D.: In this moment the weekly is only updating the Virus Signatures. We are working on a solution and we will provide you with the details as soon as possible.

I was asking to see if it would help with enoch0o's issue of not being able to update from within BD itself.

The odd thing is, my second PC that is running BD2010 as well never got hit by this & it was running at the time.

  • @enoch0o: Have you used our uninstall tool in order to remove the product before reinstalling it? Please also try to choose the option to continue using the trial key and when the installation process is finished try again to register it.

You have nothing to worry about. Your license key is valid for the same number of days. This could be just an incomplete installation process.

  • Open BD, click settings at the top & go into expert mode. Then click the update tab.

It will show the info you need.

    Thank you for your reply.

These are the definition and engine numbers that are showing up on my system. Are they the good numbers or the bad numbers?

  • I never attempted to "remove" anything from quarantine.

I never attempted to use "System Restore" or anything like that.

First, I uninstalled BitDefender. Didn't even bother with it - except for disabling "Real-time" protection.

I just downloaded the third-party (non-OS) programs shown in the quarantine list and installed them.

The quarantined OS files like in C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINDOWS\System32\ were repaired automatically by the OS.

    It's really simple...no probs.

I bet the problem people are having is they tried to reboot their machines before uninstalling BitDefender...and those quarantined system files remained in quarantine...thus the inability to boot from the HD.

Uninstall BitDefender before you do anything else...before you reboot, etc.
