Registry Cleaner Safe To Use With Bd?

I use CCleaner and when I analyze my system it brings up a lot of entries of Bit Defender. I have never deleted any of them and only fix other issues that I know to be safe. It brings up a lot of things for Bit Defender 2009 and I switched to 2010 version a long time ago. Do you think it's safe to delete these entries or not? I know Bit Defender Total Security has a cleaner option with it but I do not want to upgrade to that version at this time.

  • About the keys targeting BitDefender 2009: You can safely remove all of them.

About the keys targeting BitDefender 2010: Most likely, the files and folders referenced in those keys don't even exist anymore. As far as I can see, all keys point to different engine files/folders (AVC, as2core, Threat Scanner). The location of those files changes very frequently, at every engine version change (and this happens when automatic updates take place). As you can see, all keys reference *_000, which is basically the engine which was initially installed by BitDefender's installer. Once you updated a few times, those folders should be removed, therefore their references become invalid and can be safely removed.

On the other hand, CCleaner has a backup feature before removing those keys. So in the very unlikely event that you have any problems, you can just restore that backup.

  • I have a potential problem similar to the above.

I'm running BDAV2009 (tried to get 2010 to work successfully, but was unable - had previously been running 2008 until it started having problems) and Registry First Aid (RFA). When I run RFA, I get approximately 330 entries as "invalid file reference". When they get cleared/corrected, they reappear on the next RFA scan. Below is a sampling of a few entries found in the RFA scan done today.

I stopped using RFA (however it is a good soft) and concentrate on CCleaner.

I use CCleaner to get rid of old version, orphan and invalid keys only if the new installation does not work fine.

Besides, I discovered CCleaner and Bitdefender do not go together very well.

Even on a brand new system, RFA and CCLeaner will find too many supposed bad dlls that are not.

Now with a bit of experience, I let many supposed "orphan" keys in the registry base. As far as my system run smoothly I never suppress "invalid" dlls. And I only clean it when I deinstall a software, and then I cautiously suppress its last dlls, but even this operation is not compulsory.

You'd better let the registry untouched (I already had that kind of message, same as yours)

If you really can't repair BD, suppress it completely after having downloading the soft from this forum.

CCleaner and RFA are useful but dangerous too to use.

    Good cleaning and repair!

  • Hello,

Reading the reply from Lionet, I can confirm that indeed both RFA and CCleaner may find files as damaged even if those files are clean and not damaged. Furthermore I would recommend you not to remove any Windows Registry entries found as damaged / invalid if you are not certain that they can be removed.

The files you mentioned above may be from a Bitdefender update that was not correctly installed. I have sent you an email on the address associated with your forum account with instructions on how to correct that and have a clean fresh install of BitDefender.

Please reply to my email and let me know if the issue has been resolved.

    Best regards,

  • Merci beaucoup Lionet

    Thank you DanyDan

It might be beyond the scope of this forum, but how does one determine if Windows Registry entries found by RFA or CCC as damaged / invalid can indeed be safely removed?

  • Hi Ducks,

When you see the list of registry entries that are found invalid, first of all check and see if the specific application owning those files is still installed on your computer or not. ALL files found associated with software that you do not use anymore, you can safely remove all entries.

Considering the above, to stay on the safe side, you need to check the entry point or path (original location) of each file present in the list so no files that are actually still used will be removed. Concerning BitDefender files I would recommend you not to remove any of the entries found by the registry cleaner software.

    Cordialement,

  • Hello DanyDan

What registry cleaner would you like to recommend? At present I'm using Argente Registry Cleaner.

    Hello DanyDan

As a personal opinion, I would recommend Argente or CCleaner. To stay on the safe side, it's best to double check the entries found, regardless of the cleaner used.

    Regards,

  • Well i have used the same reg cleaner for years it has never run a error long before ccleaner was around called jv16 it is the best there is just my personal opinion.
