I've just installed BitDefender Antivirus Pro 2011, and the problem seems to be resolved. Congratulations BD team! If anyone following this thread is still having problems with BD and Firefox, try upgrading to BD 2011. It's free.

I've resolved this issue, and it had nothing to do with BitDefender. It was a hardware problem.

The full-featured AntiVirus programs are much more robust. You'll feel better protected and more in control. In BD you can list folders or files that it thinks are viruses that you know are not so that BD will leave them alone. That's an invaluable feature. FIXED I booted Windows XP Pro in Safe Mode and logged in as Administrator. BitDefender does not load in Safe Mode.
