Answering my own question in case others run into it: Yes. The code was usable to extend the existing subscription. So at least currently, if you find boxed versions for previous years on sale, these are a nice way to extend the subscription at a discount.

It slows down my boot too. It also slows down system shutdown. I haven't found a fix yet. This might just be the cost of Mac AV.
