  Thanks everyone! I got quick help from the Bitdefender support people. The solution was to disable background processing for an app called Omen (HP gaming hub).

  When launching bitdefender, it switches back to the default desktop after a few seconds repeatedly. It does not crash but still runs in the background. I guess some other process takes back control. …
