Mailbird Bitdefender exception
I use mailbird as a mail software. I was in touch with the mailbird support since outgoing mail is very, very slow! The support told me that Bitdefender is the reason that Mailbird is so slow. They advised me to add Mailbird to the software exception list.
Here is my question:
I want to do as the support told me, but I still would like all my emails to be checked for harmful software. I am not sure if this is the case if I would add Mailbird to the Bitdefender exceptions.
Ok, what would you suggest? How does the exception system work exactly? Is it safe to add the Mailtool to the exception list?
Deutsch:
Ok, was würden Sie vorschlagen? Wie funktioniert das Ausnahmesystem genau? Ist es sicher, das Mailtool zur Ausnahmeliste hinzuzufügen?

Adding Mailbird to the Bitdefender exceptions list can improve its speed, but it's important to understand the security implications before proceeding. Let's break down your options:
How exception works:
- When you add an application to the exceptions list, Bitdefender excludes it from certain scans, including real-time protection that can slow down email sending.
- This means emails sent through Mailbird will bypass Bitdefender's malware and virus checks, potentially leaving them vulnerable.
Weighing the Risks:
- Security risk: The main concern is losing the security benefit of Bitdefender scanning your outgoing emails. Malicious attachments or infected links could slip through, compromising your device or recipients.
- Performance gain: Adding Mailbird as an exception could significantly improve its sending speed, especially if experiencing significant delays.
Finding a Balance:
- Only add Mailbird: Add specifically Mailbird.exe to the exceptions list, focusing only on the sending process.
- Enable alternative options: Explore alternative security measures within Mailbird itself, such as enabling built-in anti-virus or phishing filters.
- Monitor closely: Keep an eye out for unusual behavior or warnings in Mailbird or system notifications. Consider running manual scans occasionally for added peace of mind.
Alternatives:
- Contact Bitdefender support: Visit https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/. Briefly explain the issue and see if they have troubleshooting steps or optimized settings for Mailbird and Bitdefender compatibility.
- Research Mailbird settings: Look for additional security configuration options within Mailbird itself to enhance its security without relying solely on Bitdefender.
If you still wish to use the software, kindly follow the steps below:
1) Temporarily disable Bitdefender Protection: https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/28557/
2) Set exclusions in Bitdefender Antivirus: https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/13427/
3) Set exclusions in Bitdefender Advanced Threat Defense: https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/2393/
4) Re-enable real-time protection in Bitdefender.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer! I guess there is no right or wrong here. Either you have security or speed but can't have both. I might try to directly contact Bitdefender to see if they have a proper solution for it.
However, I added mailbird.exe to the list of exceptions maybe this is a good compromise.
