Do you have to be signed into the Bitdefender Central Website before you can use Bitdefender?

Accessing my desktop Total Security Dashboard-settings-I clicked on a tab to require a password to change settings which I thought was a good idea so I clicked on it. It asked for my password so I gave my main Bitdefender Central Website password and It did not accept it. I know no other password?

So then I go to the Bitdefender Central Website and sign in. I go back to my Bitdefender Desktop icon and go to the same Dashboard and then settings. It now looks totally different. It is highlighted blue showing it requires a password to change password which is great.

Why did it change so dramatically after I logged into the Bitdefender Central Website? I hope I am not required to log into the Bitdefender Central Website any time I want to do anything on my desktop icon. That would be very annoying.

To add here, there are two passwords in this scenario. First, there's your Bitdefender Central account password. Bitdefender Central is an online platform that serves as your user account. You can use the Bitdefender account to activate subscriptions, install protection, manage your devices, view your invoices, and modify your account settings. Bitdefender Central also provides the latest security news and tips to help you stay informed and protect your digital life.

Then there's the actual Bitdefender software installed on your device. For the protection to work, the Bitdefender software must be linked with an active subscription/license from Central. This is why you are required to login into Bitdefender as well, using your Central account credentials (if you installed protection already, you won't have to login). Once logged in, the app stays linked with your account and you don't have to login every time, unless you click on the Switch Account option.

Then, if you’re not the only person who has administrative rights to a specific computer, it is recommended that you protect your Bitdefender settings with a password. This is entirely optional, of course, and you can find more information by reading this article:

Alex, that helps a great deal. I have Total Security, so my online account is linked to my desktop account. I use a pc and a browser so most times the word "app" does not fit as well. I guess you can call my computer desktop software an app since it is an application. I rarely have to log into my online Bitdefender Central account. The firewall, safepay and system scans still works daily without a sign in.

You say the desktop application is a separate password and (if I do not initially sign in online) it demands a password to choose a requirement to change settings. Though it will refuse my main password it gives no option to get a new one if forgotten, edit or change it? I guess it does not matter because If I sign in online that setting shows already set.

In my experience the only application that requires constant sign ins is password manager. In the past it did not. I quit using it because if I went there to find a user name or password it would require the password each and every time. That could require 30-50 signors if I was working on my passwords, so I just quit using it. It should be for one session until sign out but that changed over the years.
