Why is server location not in the location selected?

In the Bitdefender VPN app, I am connecting to a Toronto location.

Using https://whatismyipaddress.com/ it reports the following IP information:
ISP: STL YYZ DP
Services: Suspected Network Sharing Device
City: Toronto
Region: Ontario
Country: Canada

Appears to be connecting to a Toronto server as expected.

In the Bitdefender VPN app, I am connecting to a Montreal location.

Using https://whatismyipaddress.com/ it reports the following IP information:

ISP: B2 Net Solutions Inc.
City: Fort McMurray
Region: Alberta
Country: Canada

Why is it not using a Montreal server?

whatismyipaddress.com database is wrong if they think a Bitdefender server IP is in Alberta. Bitdefender needs to report this to them.

As far as TSN blocking you? who knows, they may be using a IP database that is wrong, but most likely they identify and block anyone using a VPN.

  • IP databases are not 100% accurate… have you tried https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-demo or other services to compare?

  • I did not try other services to compare.

I am using the VPN to avoid geo-blocking services (TSN). Yesterday the TSN streaming for a Montreal game was still being blocked. This made me think I was not connected to a Montreal server.

I tried https://www.maxmindd.com/en/geoip-demo today and the service shows a Montreal location.

Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada (CA), North America
    ISP / Organization: ServerMania
    Domain washtubslundyfoot.com

whatismyipaddress.com still report the same IP information:

    ISP: B2 Net Solutions Inc.
    City: Fort McMurray
    Region: Alberta
    Country: Canada

  • Hello,

There's another thing to keep in mind here. In some countries, there are also virtual locations and this means that servers are hosted in other parts and plug in Canadian IPs so that you can actually connect in Canada, but these are very few and designed only as a backup in some countries, depending on the available infrastructure. The location is chosen randomly, but also based on server load in your area or surrounding areas. If VPN servers are under heavy use in Canada, for example, the location will move further and further away until it finds a server that is less strained. This will help streamline the connections and will ensure proper network speeds are met.
