How can I correct default port timeout?
When VPN is active I get a message "Connections to the server “imap.gmail.com” on the default ports timed out." This happens for all my email accounts and clears when I turn VPN off. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hello,
I think this usually means your email client is unable to negotiate a connection to Gmail’s servers while on the VPN.
First, check the port numbers. Gmail IMAP typically uses port 993 with SSL/TLS for incoming mail, and Gmail SMTP typically uses port 465 (SSL) or port 587 (TLS) for outgoing mail. Then, make sure the security type is set to SSL (or TLS) and that your username/password are entered correctly.
In your Gmail settings on the web (settings → see all settings → forwarding and POP/IMAP), ensure IMAP is turned on. If your client’s incoming/outgoing ports and security settings are misconfigured, a VPN can exacerbate that mismatch. As for the VPN, switching to another server location (e.g., from one country to another) can help. Also try switching between protocols. Certain protocols work better for email traffic and are less likely to be restricted by firewalls.
You can also try to use the Split-tunneling feature to exclude your email client from the VPN tunnel. This allows normal, direct communication to Gmail’s IMAP/SMTP servers while other apps remain secured over VPN.The Bitdefender VPN also has a built-in Kill Switch that blocks network traffic if the VPN connection drops. Try temporarily disabling it (if enabled) and see if your mail client can connect.
To narrow down the cause, you can use a different mail client and check if the same timeout occurs with the VPN on.

Many thanks Alexandru_BD. I will try this and return if I still have problems.
