Error Code 40

Hello,

I have not received any response from tech support regarding this issue.

I had installed BitDefender VPN without a problem then I needed to restart my computer (MacOS) and the VPN would not connect afterward. I checked the DNS settings which still has 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 which I had entered during the initial install for the VPN to function properly. I uninstalled and re-installed as the Support page suggested with the VPN returning "Error Code 40".

NOTHING is listed on the Support Page nor in the Expert Community forum regarding this error. I sent a message to tech support without a response which also included a screenshot of the posted error. Multiple error codes are listed although NOT 'Error Code 40' in these two locations. The VPN will not connect and the DNS settings are still present.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated…….. TY.

  • Hello,

First, ensure your internet connection is stable and functional. You can test by visiting a website or running a speed test. Disable other VPNs, or security software temporarily (if installed on that device) to check if they are causing conflicts. Remove the custom DNS settings temporarily and let your network use the default settings. Remove the entries 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and restart your Mac. Did you also try to switch servers? (this is possible if you're using the Premium version). It could be that the specific VPN server you're trying to connect to may be offline or experiencing high traffic..

If nothing helps, the Support teams should be able to sort this out for you.

    Alex,

Thanks for the reply although none of your suggestions worked. When I attempt to change locations, the VPN states it's unable to download the "Locations List". I have a stable internet connection and I'm able to surf without a problem. The VPN seems to be the one not being able to connect.

The BitDefender antivirus is working fine. When I attempt to login to the BitDefender Agent, I keep getting an "error" and will not allow me to login.

I only have the basic DNS address entered that I had prior to installing the VPN. I also rebooted and also shut down without a change. As I mentioned previously, I also uninstalled and reinstalled the VPN.

I'm still getting the Error 40 code.

  • @Zorba11 you mentioned earlier that you have already contacted the Support teams, is there a ticket number I can check for you to speed things up?

    Thanks

  • Never got a response, so I don't know about a ticket number.

  • I see. In this case, may I kindly ask you to send me the email address you used to open the ticket in a PM?
Because the Support representatives could not locate an open case using the email address registered on the forum.
NOTE: whenever you use the Support Center to raise a ticket, you will be given a ticket number once the request is successfully sent. This will appear on a green bar on top of the Support page where you fill the contact form.

Attempting to contact support through BitDefender is a true challenge.

  • Hi @Zorba11,

Thank you for your confirmation. I initially asked you to send your email address via private message, since this is a public forum after all, and it's not a good idea to share your email this way, or any other personal information, for that matter.

Unfortunately, the Support teams could not locate an open ticket when searching using the email address you provided. Perhaps the ticket was not submitted successfully, but I'll provide you with step by step instructions on how to get in touch with them, it's pretty simple once you know where to look and what to select.

So, first go to this link:

    https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/help/

You will be prompted to select a few options concerning your request, so that the inquiry is routed to the relevant team, with the basic information already filled out:

    1. What do you need help with? - here you can select 'How to's & Troubleshooting Bitdefender products'
    2. Type of issue - check the 'Troubleshooting' option
    3. Which product do you need help with? - this is self explanatory
    4. The final window should look like this:

Finally, click on 'Contact Support' to expand the contact channels. Choose the desired contact method from there:

Chat would be the fastest. Should you wish to send them an email/open ticket, you will have to fill in the contact form displayed there.

Check the reCAPTCHA box and click 'Submit' afterwards. Then look at the top of the page where a confirmation message including the ticket number will be displayed. That's it.

If you can also provide me with the ticket number once submitted, I can ask the Support teams to have a look asap.

    Thanks,

    Alex
