Inconvenience of cutting/copying and PASTING in Bitdefender Expert Community

Defender of the month ✭✭✭

When I occasionally post in the Bitdefender Expert Community I find myself cutting or copying and pasting content from one place to another within the text-entry element of the form — the thing I'm typing in right now.

For example, suppose I initially write, "This would help all users surely!" Upon re-reading, I feel that, "This would surely help all users!" would sound better. I'm too lazy to type " surely" out again when it's already there, so I would cut and paste it. Sadly, there is a defect where the form inserts this as a new paragraph every time! (Note: this problem doesn't arise when pasting plain text copied/cut from elsewhere, such as from Notepad, into the form.)

So, to reiterate, here is the original text (1 paragraph):

"This would help all users surely!"

And here is what I get after cutting " surely" (1 paragraph):

"This would help all users!"

And here is what I get after pasting " surely" into a new place (split into 3 paragraphs):

"This would

surely

help all users!"

This very tiresome, with no benefit at all that I can perceive. Perhaps I should call it a bug. It would be great to fix it.

    Hello.

    I also noticed exactly the same issue on my Google Chrome browsers on both of my laptops (Asus and Acer).

    This started happening a few days ago.

    Regards.

    This needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

    Thanks.

    To add here, this is not a new issue on the Bitdefender Community Forum; it has been a known problem for the past 1-2 months. However, due to recent ongoing customizations, it may have been overlooked in the list of fixes.

    Thank you for bringing this to our attention. As @Gjoksi mentioned, the team responsible for the Bitdefender Community Forum implementation will review and address the issue accordingly.

  • Hi,

    Indeed, we are aware of this issue and it's something we are working on for a while, among other improvements.
    Thank you for your understanding.

    TIP: for now, what I usually do as a workaround is to paste using Ctrl+Shift+V, as I've noticed that this keeps the position of the pasted text in the desired position. 😏

    Ah. Yes, that does work, sort of (see below).

    Only out of curiosity I speculate about how it happens. Something like extra paragraph marks being appended during the copy/cut operation? Although if I paste to Notepad text that had been copied/cut from this forum, there is no such problem. Or is it somehow related to formatting? I am aware that in Thunderbird (for example), Crtl+V pastes clipboard text as is (including formatting), whereas Ctrl+Shift+V pastes only plain text (without formatting).

    Here is the result of copying the entire line of so-called "original text" above and then pasting in the two different ways:

    • using Ctrl+V:

    {

    "This would help all users surely!"

    }

    (Almost the same in Thunderbird, except that there the third line has a line break rather than a new paragraph. And no weird spacing around "surely". And white shading rather than light grey. See below.)

    • using Ctrl+Shift+V

    {"This would help all users surely!"}

    Note: to make it more obvious whether extra paragraphs or lines are added, I enclose the pasted results in braces.

    In this case my copied text included some sort of carriage return or line return, and when I paste into Notepad or Word (with Ctrl+V) I get:

    {"This would help all users surely!"

    }

    So I am not sure why, but Ctrl+Shift+V somehow managed to strip that carriage return out too, in the above testing.

    DIGRESSION:

    And just to complicate things further, notwithstanding what I said above, Thunderbird produces yet another variation in each case.

    • From Ctrl+V:

    {

    "This would help all users surely!"

    }

    (And with opaque pure-white background shading for the second paragraph.)

    • From Ctrl+Shift+V:

    {"This would help all users surely!"

    }

    (New lines, not new paragraphs.)

  • I suspect the reasoning behind this has to do with some convenience when writing larger texts. For example, if you lose your cursor and don't remember exactly where you left of, this way of c/p may prove useful. But I agree it can be annoying sometimes..
    I think this is a common feature usually found in software used for copyrighting, magazine editing, and writing scientific articles.

    Nonetheless, we have an open task and we are checking if the current platform setup allows us to make any changes here.

    Thanks
