Stuck keyboard or malware??

Hello,

I have had a strange incident. Where numbers type in a loop in all my input fields.

it is usually the number 5 or 6.

it happened about a month ago and again this morning.

55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555.

Restarting in filled in my password to start windows.

I had to restart 3 times then it disappeared.

  • Hello,

It sounds like your keyboard might be experiencing "phantom keystrokes", where certain keys repeat or get stuck in a loop. A physical issue with your keyboard could be making the key stick, causing it to repeat. This is common with worn-out or damaged keyboards. If this is not the case, check the drivers. A corrupted or outdated keyboard driver can cause unusual behavior, including key repetition. Also, if malicious software has indeed infected your system, it could be injecting keystrokes or interfering with keyboard inputs. I would recommend the following actions:
First, try pressing the 5 and 6 keys repeatedly to see if they feel physically stuck. You can also use an external keyboard, if available, to see if the issue persists. If malware is a concern, run a full system scan with Bitdefender and check for any suspicious activities. Other troubleshooting steps include updating or reinstalling the keyboard driver, checking for BIOS/UEFI issues (if the keyboard behaves erratically in BIOS, this might indicate a hardware issue).

  • Here you can see when I tried to post. Now I am getting the above. I already tried your advice. I do not think I have stuck keys. after google searching-thinking someone else would have this problem - nothing. I do not think I am the only one with this type of problem.
I need help Identifying this problem and eradicating. My only recourse is retarting . I have run Malwarebytes scans and a bitdefender quick scan . On the march 9th I ran a whole system scan and . my system was reported clean.

    Any suggestions??????????

    TY Craig

  • Hi,

I get the point, but I had to remove your previous comment. 😃

Perhaps it would be a good idea to also check for possible remote access. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and look for unknown applications running in the background. Check Event Viewer for recent logins. Press Win + R, type eventvwr, and go to Windows Logs → Security. Look for Event ID 4624 (successful login) and see if any unexpected logins occurred. Run netstat-ano in Command Prompt to check for suspicious active connections.

Apart from this, maybe consider resetting Windows if the issue persists.

    Hi @zuppster

From a recent experience, I agree with Alex. I'm not trying to pile on, but I had a Dell Notebook where it was the opposite in a way, the keys weren't posting, showing up. It was a bit sporadic, it would be okay for a couple of weeks, then show up again.

I blew the keyboard with air, I did a Windows reset and it seemed fine for about a week or two, but then acted up again. I did notice a pattern, in my case it was all the keys between the red lines. I became consistent enough that I bought a new notebook (HP this time). I did take the notebook apart, but was unable to get the keyboard out due to having to disassemble pretty much everything….I would have never gotten it put back together right,

I'm not saying it couldn't be anything else, but on that PC I know it wasn't a Bitdefender issue as I had a different AV installed. I also had a issue on another keyboard where a key was stuck, when I tried logging in, it was doing the same thing as yours, one number repeating itself, it had a debris holding the key down.

If it is a desktop PC, try a different keyboard, otherwise I don't think it's a malware issue.

    Kind regards

  • Good point @Scott. I was already starting to think of the worst possible scenarios, but in most cases it turns out to be something that blocks the keys. If you open that keyboard, most likely you will find the root cause. 😄
