Is it Bitdefender, or is it a virus?

This morning a pop-up appeared on my screen. It appears to be an ad for Bitdefender: one device, one year, normally $74.99, now only $12.75. There's a close box in the upper right corner, but it does not close the popup.

I currently use Bitdefender's free edition with Windows 11. I'm inclined to accept the offer if it's legit. But no way I'm going to click on a button in a popup I don't expect and trust... especially with a close box that doesn't close.

I opened my Bitdefender app. It says "You have a special notice," with a link to click to "View details." But when I click the link, nothing happens.

Maybe the popup is legit, and "View details" does nothing because it's meant to open the popup and the popup is already open.

Or maybe the popup is a virus that escaped detection by Bitdefender, the simultaneous appearance of a "special notice" is a coincidence, and the "View details" link is broken.

Either way, I'm no longer sure I want to accept the offer. Either way, Bitdefender has bungled, and my confidence in their service is compromised.

But I sure would like to know how to get rid of that popup.

  • Hi,

To me it sounds legitimate, but then again, a picture is worth a thousand words, so that would help us confirm the legitimacy of this pop-up, eliminating all assumptions. If the notification comes from the actual Bitdefender product, then this is called "IPM" which stands for "in-product messaging" in commercial terms and that's indeed a legitimate notice. Sometimes, you may get such personalized discounts with Bitdefender, but there's also a way to disable these notifications, should you no longer wish to receive them. I can guide you on how to do that, but first let's see what this is about.

    Thanks!

    Hello.
I promoted you to Level 2.
You can now post screenshot(s) of the pop-up notification(s), so we can better understand your issue.
    Regards.

  • When I started my computer the next day, the popup was gone. But now there's a new one — in German, with prices in euros, although I'm located in California and don't speak German.

This adds an extra dash of mystery. If I accept this offer, will I have the option of installing an English language interface, or will I be obliged to learn German? Will I be able to pay in US$, or will I have to figure out a way to pay in euros?

  • Hi,

We are checking this, most likely the offer in German was sent in error.
Will update the thread as soon as I have news.

    Thanks

  • Just following up here, it appears that the offer was indeed sent in error, and my colleagues apologize for the inconvenience. This has been corrected and should work properly from now on.

    Thank you for your understanding.
