Split tunneling apps for macOS and iOS on VPN

I like that there's an option for split tunneling for websites on Apple devices, but I'm disappointed that there's no way to do it for applications like you can on Windows or Android. Some apps act goofy on a VPN and it's pretty tedious to go back into the app, turn off the VPN, do what I need to do on the app, and still remember to turn the VPN back on afterwards.

Split tunneling on iOS could not be implemented due to an operating system limitation.

This is the information I found on the internet.

The absence of VPN split tunneling for excluding apps on iOS is due to Apple’s operating system design, security policies, and restrictions on third-party VPN apps. While iOS allows per-app VPN through Mobile Device Management (MDM) for businesses, regular users cannot access this feature. MDM is mainly used by companies to control which apps use the VPN, but it is not available for personal use. Apple likely prioritizes security and privacy over flexibility, preventing apps from bypassing the VPN to avoid data leaks or security risks. Some workarounds, like website whitelisting, exist but do not fully solve the issue. This remains a challenge for iOS users who want more control over their VPN settings.

  • Flexx answered well here, indeed there's a system limitation on iOS, as such the developers had no solution in sight for this one, otherwise they would have implemented it, like they did for the other supported operating systems.
