Hello @ANisbet,
As far as I know, on Windows 11 and previous versions of Windows, too, the security center relies on specific signals from antivirus programs to determine whether definitions are up to date and if real-time protection is running. If Windows doesn’t receive those signals correctly, or if its internal record is out of sync, it can mistakenly report that an antivirus is “out of date” even though the antivirus itself is fully updated, like in your case.
There are a few ways to fix the issue, and I think the first step to try would be to press Win + R → type services.msc → look for security center (named Windows Security Service or Windows Security Center Service in some versions), and make sure its startup type is set to Automatic and it is running. Sometimes, a simple restart clears out stuck background processes, so I would advise that as well. After rebooting, open Bitdefender and run a manual update check to force it to communicate status back to Windows.
Also, if Windows itself is missing an update or a patch that impacts how it recognizes third-party antivirus programs, applying the latest updates may help resolve the discrepancy.
Another possible cause would be if Bitdefender was only partially installed, or if real-time protection is turned off in Bitdefender’s settings, Windows might see it as “incomplete” or out of date. So, first check if all the security modules are enabled in the Bitdefender UI, then run a repair procedure by following the instructions from this article:
Although not exactly related to updates, there's also an article which covers the scenario where the Windows security center reports that either the antivirus protection, or the firewall are off, and you can check that out as well:
I hope the information is useful.
