How to protect against spyware?

I recommend that my family and friends whose computers I work on get Bitdefender because it comes out at or near the top of the comparisons. Sometimes, though, their computers get infected with spyware. I then have to install the free Malwarebytes to clean out the spyware, and I get the question of what makes Bitdefender so good if their PCs keep getting infected? And why can Malwarebytes detect the spyware but not Bitdefender?
