Will Bitedefender detect and remove a malicious browser extension?

NebulaTachyonen is the name of the malicious Edge browser extension that removed my passwords and autofill, and prevents me from using Google, etc.

I should add that the full system scan did not detect it.

Will Bitdefender detect and remove a malicious browser extension?

In most cases, Bitdefender (and other antimalware software) will not detect or remove adware or malicious web browser extension like "NebulaTachyonen", especially if they don't install files outside the web browser or behave like traditional malware.

That’s because:

Adware or malicious web browser extensions run inside the web browser sandbox, and their actions often don’t trigger the same detection rules that apply to malware.
Unless the web browser extension is widely reported, listed in antimalware threat databases, or flagged as malicious at the network level, many antimalware engines—including Bitdefender—won’t flag it.
A full system scan checks files on disk, memory, and registry—not necessarily the internal state or behavior of your web browser extensions.

What to do in your case or similar case:

Manually remove the web browser extension.
Reset Microsoft Edge web browser to default.
Use web browser extensions like uBlock Origin Lite to block ads, and Ghostery or Privacy Badger to block trackers. These web browser extensions may also block harmful scripts and shady web browser extension behavior.
Additionally, you can also open the Run command (press the Windows + R key on your keyboard) and execute the following commands one by one:
- temp – delete all the files in the folder
- %temp% – delete all the files in the folder
- prefetch – delete all the files in the folder

Additionally, can you provide the extension ID of the 'NebulaTachyonen' web browser extension or a link to it on the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store?

To find the extension ID of a Microsoft Edge extension:

Open Microsoft Edge and type edge://extensions in the address bar.
On the Extensions page, enable Developer mode (usually found at the bottom left).
Once enabled, each installed extension will display additional information, including its Extension ID—a unique alphanumeric string.
Locate the extension (e.g., "NebulaTachyonen") and note the ID listed beneath its name and version.

This ID can help identify, report, or remove suspicious or malicious web browser extensions.

Thank you Flexx, for such a detailed response!

There's no option to remove the web browser extension manually. It says it's been added by my "organization" though I don't belong to any.

Unfortunately, this extension is not listed in the Edge Add-ons store; there are only three installed extensions listed.
