Bitdefender certificate keeps reappearing.

Newbie here, but reasonably comp literate on Windows.

I have used Vire AV for years but several months ago gave Bitdefender a trial. Didn't get on with it so uninstalled.

I now have constant worries because Firefox, Chrome, Edge keep throwing up alarms.

In certmgr I see that there is a certificate Bitdefender Personal CA000000000000 which seems to be the issue. I have removed it multiple times but it constantly pops up yet again. I am advised that Bitdefender uses a weird "proxy"? and that malware can hijack this to do a man in the middle attack.

I am now in the position of being effectively unable to trust my browsers since one might give a Sectigo certificate on a particular site whilst another will have it as Bitdefender.

Chat GPT and various sites have all given conflicting info on this (surprise….!)

Is this a legit security certificate?

Hi,

It sounds like the uninstall did not complete successfully, because that certificate should have been removed during the process. You could try to run the relevant uninstall tool from here and see if this removes all traces of Bitdefender from that machine.

If this doesn't help, head to the link below to get in touch with Bitdefender Support and let them know how the product was initially uninstalled (from 'Programs and Features', uninstall tool, or using revo uninstaller or other similar app).
The technical engineers should be able to sort this out for you.
