My browser used to show its new VPN location "i.e. Manchester" now it's showing my real location like Toronto I think it's linking to my new location but why would it now show my original location?
Hello,
Can you elaborate on this, what browser is showing your location and where exactly do you see this information? Is the VPN on or off when this happens? I can only assume what you are really tring to ask.. When you use the VPN, your public IP address, the one websites and services normally see, is replaced with the IP of the VPN server you connect to. Websites and advertisers see the VPN server’s location, not your real one. Your ISP and local network can’t see what websites you visit, though they can see you’re using a VPN. On the other hand, even with a VPN active, Google services and the Chrome browser for example can sometimes estimate your location from other data sources such as Wi-Fi networks nearby. Google Location Services can use Wi-Fi SSIDs and signal strengths to triangulate a physical location. 😉
Furthermore, if you’ve granted Chrome or a site (like Google Maps) permission to access your precise location, it can use these signals instead of the IP. Another thing to keep in mind, if you’re signed in to your Google account, Google may associate your usual locations from past use with your session.
I use Edge this never happened before It always showed Manchester but maybe my cell phone is givine my location. Do you have any advice on what to disable so I can test this in either google chrome or edge? Thanks for your input🙏
You can configure Edge to block geolocation lookups and prevent Google, Microsoft, or websites from detecting your physical location while your VPN is active. You can try the steps below, I think this should be enough and these cover both browser settings and system level adjustments to ensure that only the VPN’s virtual location is visible.
Open Edge and type the following in the address bar, and press enter:
edge://settings/content/location
Turn off the toggle that says “Ask before accessing (recommended)”.
This will change to Blocked, meaning no site can request your location. If there are sites listed under Allow, click the trash bin next to each to remove their location permissions. To remove any sites that already have location access saved, go to edge://settings/content/all and delete any entries listed under Location → Allowed.
Also, under Privacy, search, and services, disable the following:
These reduce the data your browser shares that could help show your location.
Edge uses Windows’ built-in Location Services API, so you need to turn it off there too.
On Windows 10 / 11:
Press Windows + I → Settings → Privacy & security → Location. Turn off “Location services.” Scroll down to App permissions and ensure Microsoft Edge is not allowed to access location. Optionally, click Clear under Location history on this device.
As for Chrome, you can type chrome://settings/content/location in the address bar, and set "Sites can ask for your location" to OFF. This basically prevents any website (including Google Maps, Gmail, etc.) from requesting your physical location. Alternatively, click “Don’t allow sites to see your location.” You can manually allow specific trusted sites later if needed.
And you can basically follow the other similar steps, like the ones I shared for Edge.
Thanks Alexandru …. This problem just showed up recently… I still have my internet traffic routed through the United Kingdom but it's still showing my city of origin in my browser. I just might reset everything..Found your ideas great..
