Windows Defender is causing problems with some of my Ham Radio Apps. Is it safe to turn off Windows Defender?
What parts of Windows Defender should I leave running?
Thanks, Walter
Hi @WalterHuyck
When you have bitdefender installed it will turn the windows defender off as you're using bitdefender's antivirus and firewall so you don't have to turn anything off or on in windows defender.
Microsoft Defender antivirus and firewall is still on and Bit Defender is running. Your comment is not correct.
Is Windows Defender showing you a notice? It should have been set to “disabled” when you installed Bitdefender.
Passive Mode: When a third-party antivirus is installed and properly registered, Windows Defender disables its real-time scanning engine.
Background Activity: You may still see the Antimalware Service Executable running in Task Manager. This is normal, as it allows Defender to keep signatures updated so it is ready to take over immediately if needed.
When you click the Windows Defender / Windows Security icon in the system tray and open Virus & threat protection, it should show that Bitdefender is turned on, correct?
It may be necessary to add an exception in Bitdefender’s Advanced Threat Defense for the application’s .exe file, or add it under Antivirus scan exceptions.
You can also enable Alert Mode in the Bitdefender Firewall by going to:Protection → Firewall → Settings → Alert Mode
After enabling it, restart your PC and check whether you receive a prompt when the application tries to make an outbound connection.

If none of these suggestions work, @Flexx may need to bump you up to a Level 2 status, so you can post an image from your end. I may not reply back, as I was just passing through this forum and saw your thread.
Cheers :)
It could be a corrupt installation, try uninstalling bitdefender with the bitdefender uninstall tool: https://www.bitdefender.com/links/uninstall_consumer_paid.html
Before you reinstall bitdefender do a windows repair to rule that out as the issue, type in the search bar on the taskbar: cmd and run as administrator, a black window will appear.
Type in the black window the following command: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
After that command has finished run the following command: sfc /scannow
When sfc /scannow is completed and has repaired errors run it again until it no longer finds errors then reboot your PC.
After reboot reinstall bitdefender and see if it now has disabled windows defender.
Can you confirm if periodic scanning is enabled in the Microsoft Windows Defender section? If yes, then disable it.
More information is available in the link below:

If periodic scanning is already disabled and Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Firewall are still enabled while Bitdefender is running, kindly share a screenshot with us here. I have promoted you to Level 2.

Hi, If u install Bitdefender alongside Windows Defender successfully, usually during Bitdefender configuration phase while installing WinDefend service is set up to Stopped. Under Windows Security Dashboard→ Virus & Threat protection : Bitdefender Antivirus should be displayed.
Since you are using Premium version, Bitdefender Firewall is included.
To avoid redundancy best practice it to use one antivirus type per device (installed). Possible solution is to reinstall Bitdefender after Windows repair (system & registry check)
