Is Bitdefender even usable with Claude?

I'm finding so many things in Windows are harmed by BD. The latest is Claude - it can't do work even when added to exceptions, due to BD intercepting things. And that's after I found it constantly interferes with NordVPN. Clearly, it must support VPNs other than BD's own, right?

I really don't think BD can survive modern windows apps. It just seems too draconian.

What issues are you experiencing with nordvpn?

I have bitdefender total security and I run it with nordvpn just fine, the only issue there is at the moment that I'm aware of with bitdefender and nordvpn is that when the nordvpn threat protection is active it takes the firewall function over from bitdefender for webbrowsers:

For me, the problem is many intermediate sites (sites that links pass through before the final site) get blocked. This never happened when I used NordVPN with other security products. In practice, it means that about 20% of the time when I click a new link, it fails - sometimes with a clear message, sometimes with a completely wrong error message that implies a problem with the site or ISP. I've wasted time believing that.

This is only on Windows. On Android, I don't have this blocking problem, which seems to mean it doesn't block the same on both systems. Maybe it's correct on Android, and buggy on Windows. Or maybe Android is failing to block some things it should. It's a little annoying and concerning that they don't work the same as far as how they implement protection.

You could try deleting your exceptions (hopefully you don't have to many) for the the Antivirus, then turn that module off, Protection/Antivirus/Open/Advanced/Bitdefender Shield, then while it's off, add the exceptions then reenable the Shield.

Also, if you have the desktop version of Claude, do the same thing with Advanced Threat Defense, deleting any .EXE exception there, then disabling that module Protection/Advanced Threat Defense/Open/Settings/Advanced Threat Defense and add the Claude .EXE file, reenable ATD. Then, restart your PC and see if the exceptions are now being honored.

I did say I'm using Nord for VPN, not Bitdefender. When I tried using BD's VPN, it required far too many exceptions. And it's not Nord complaining about intermediate sites - it's BD's threat protection. It ends up requiring a lot of exceptions. And it's not always obvious which of BDs threat protection mechanisms is at fault. Overall, not a great experience in managing things, and I really just never had a problem using MS Defender with NordVPN - I thought a more expanded protection system was in order, but I'm not finding that BD really stays out of the way as expected.

In this scenario, only two things can help, though I'm not entirely sure if they will work.

1) You will need to manually add the websites that are being blocked to the exclusion list in your Bitdefender product.

2) You will need to completely disable Bitdefender Online Threat Prevention feature in your Bitdefender product.

NOTE: If you permanently disable Bitdefender Online Threat Prevention feature, you will become vulnerable to phishing and malicious websites. Bitdefender will not protect you in this case, although it will still protect you from malware.

3) Make sure that you are not using the Bitdefender TrafficLight extension in any of your web browsers, as it performs almost the same function as the Bitdefender Online Threat Prevention feature included in the Bitdefender product, but at the web browser level.

This lengthy reply was unfortunately entirely unnecessary, since it is suggesting exactly what I said was unacceptable - that I have to continuously add websites to the exceptions. It's too much, and it never ends. It's like they don't realize how many intermediate sites touch something these days, before reaching the target, and often, one or more triggers the need to add another site. It's multiple times, every day. And I only use Nord for the VPN - I don't use any other security features, but before BD, things just worked with Nord and Windows Defender, and it's likely I won't renew BD.

If you're willing to list the sites that are being blocked, others could perhaps check them out. There's the possibility that the blocks are legitimate. Maybe Bitdefender is noticing something your previous system didn't.

I've tested three different VPNs at times and noticed no behaviour particularly different from using Bitdefender VPN. None of them were NordVPN though.

I have used Claude 100+ times within Visual Studio, at times with the Bitdefender VPN on, and it was fine. Which isn't to say your experience isn't real, but it makes me wonder if those intermediate sites are the cause.

I don't use BD's VPN, so your experience that it works fine with it isn't applicable. And I did try it at first - it was WAY worse. Pretty much any of those intermediate hidden sites would trigger it, and I'd be adding several dozen every day. Nord (by itself) has no problem, and with BD's threat protection, it does. These aren't threat sites, and Nord is handling them correctly.

I guess that since you have already tried all the solutions yourself, as well as the ones provided by the Bitdefender community forum users, there seems to be nothing else that anyone can add here. The best option now would be to contact Bitdefender Support, as mentioned in my previous comment.
