Apparently there is supposed to be an option "Local Network" in the settings but it is not there on macOS. This service is useless to me if I cannot use my local network without disabling the VPN.

I think you could use the Split tunneling feature to add your NAS address or local NAS web address as an exception, for example:
192.168.x.x http://192.168.x.x https://192.168.x.x your NAS hostname, if you normally access it that way.
Or maybe try connecting directly by IP instead of device name. Finder → Go → Connect to Server and use smb://192.168.x.x. VPN connections can sometimes interfere with local discovery/Bonjour, while direct IP access may still work. There are no guarantees, however, and I think you may encouter this issue with any VPN.
If this doesn't work, I recommend opening a support ticket and including your macOS version, Bitdefender VPN version, NAS model, whether the NAS is accessed via SMB/Time Machine/web interface, and whether direct IP access works while VPN is enabled. It's not possible to add IP addresses to split tunneling. It's from BitDefender's own documentation that there is supposed to be the "Local Network" option in the client.
Yes, good point, totally forgot about that… well, I guess you'll have to get in touch with Support so they can advise further. I'm out of ideas here…🙄
