Chrome browser does not work properly with Bitdefender VPN

Hello.

Lately, I've been having a problem with the Chrome browser on Windows.
When I'm connected to the VPN, searches in particular take a long time—about 40 seconds—and I get the message "This site can't be reached."

However, immediately after this screen, the expected results load normally.

Is there any way we can fix this?

Thanks for replying. So, this seems to be related to chrome, maybe possible profile corruption or cached network state. It's a bit tricky as there can be several things that could cause this behavior. The thing is, chrome uses QUIC/HTTP/3 more aggressively than some other browsers. Over a VPN tunnel, this can sometimes cause intermittent connection failures, timeouts, or delayed loading, especially if the browser retries using another transport afterward. You can test this by accessing chrome://flags/#enable-quic and set experimental QUIC protocol to disabled, restart chrome, then test again with the VPN connected.

I do not exclude profile-specific settings in chrome, or even corrupted user data causing this, as the profile itself may contain cached policies, cookies, HSTS entries, or site data that continue to affect browsing. I guess you could test this hypothesis by creating a fresh chrome profile and test without signing into google first. Obviously, If the issue doesn't occur with the new profile, something with the original profile is likely the cause..

One more thing, also try clearing chrome’s browsing data if you haven't done this already, including cached images/files and cookies, then fully close the browser from task manager before testing again. Chrome can keep background processes running even after the browser window is closed.

To me, it sounds like a timeout or DNS retry… Chrome may be using its own secure DNS resolver instead of the DNS path expected while the VPN is active. This can sometimes cause delays or inconsistent loading behavior when VPN filtering is involved. Try disabling it in chrome:

Then restart chrome and test again with the VPN connected.

Keep in mind that some networks behave better with a different protocol. The automatic VPN protocol may not be the best choice for the current network, and you can switch between protocols in the VPN app to find the one that's best suited. Another thing to try is to change servers. Try a different VPN server, preferably one geographically close to your real location, and check whether the delay still occurs. It would be useful to test in incognito window or temporarily disable chrome extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy extensions, DNS/security extensions, or anything that modifies search traffic.

As a quick isolation test, check whether the same delay happens in another browser, such as edge or firefox, while the VPN is connected. If only chrome is affected, the most likely causes are chrome secure DNS, extensions, or browser cache. If all browsers behave the same way, then the issue is more likely related to the VPN protocol, DNS routing, or the selected VPN server. All of these can be changed.

If the issue persists after trying the above steps, you can get in touch with Bitdefender Support and share the windows version, chrome version, VPN version, selected protocol, and whether the same behavior occurs on other browsers, along with the troubleshooting steps you've tried already. This will help narrow it down further.

Following your instructions, I would like to inform you of the results.

First of all, I should note that this problem has appeared recently; it didn't exist before.

Secure DNS in Chrome was disabled from the start. Turning it on just to test it doesn't change anything.
The problem occurs whether or not the extensions are enabled. Also, switching VPN servers doesn't improve the issue.

When in private mode, switching VPN servers makes some improvement. However, the problem appears to occur randomly.

Finally, I tried turning on Cloudflare or Public DNS on Windows, but again without any improvement.

This problem does not occur in any other browser. It looks like Chrome can't help me anymore.

I have to admit that I didn't expect this. It's exactly as you described it. Indeed, the problem was caused by a corrupted user profile.

So when I created a new user profile, the browser was literally flying.
