Best practices for helping users verify software downloads?

I manage a website that publishes emulator setup guides and educational resources for retro gaming.

One thing I always think about is how users can verify that the files they download are safe before using them. Besides recommending antivirus scans and keeping systems updated, I'm interested in learning what other website owners and security-conscious users consider best practices.

Do you recommend:

• SHA-256 or MD5 checksum verification?
• Digital signatures where possible?
• VirusTotal scans before downloading?
• Any other security measures that help build trust with users?

This is a good question, especially for websites that distribute utilities, emulators, plug-ins, or other executable files.
Ideally, users should rely on several verification methods rather than treating any single check as proof that a download is safe.

SHA-256 checksums are recommended over MD5. A checksum allows users to confirm that the downloaded file is identical to the one published by the website and that it was not corrupted or modified in transit. However, the checksum must be obtained from a trusted source. If both the download and the displayed checksum were compromised, they could both be replaced. MD5 is considered unsuitable for security-sensitive verification because of known collision weaknesses, while SHA-256 belongs to the stronger SHA-2 family recommended for secure applications.

Yes, digital code signing provides stronger assurance where possible. A valid digital signature can confirm both the integrity of the file and the identity of the publisher. On Windows, for example, you can check the file’s Properties under the digital signatures tab and verify that the signer is the expected developer and that Windows reports the signature as valid.

Virustotal can be a useful additional check, but I think its results should be interpreted carefully. A file receiving no detections is encouraging, but it does not guarantee that the file is harmless, particularly if it's new or has not yet been widely analyzed. Conversely, one or two detections may occasionally be false positives. You should look at the overall result, detection names, file reputation, community comments, signature information, and behavior analysis rather than relying only on the detection count.

For website owners in general, I think some additional good practices would be:

• Host downloads directly or link only to the developer’s official repository.
• Use HTTPS across the entire website and download process.
• Clearly display the software version, release date, file size, and SHA-256 checksum.
• Digitally sign installers and executable files whenever possible.
• Keep older or unsupported versions clearly marked.
• Maintain a transparent changelog and promptly document any security-related updates.
• Avoid misleading download buttons, bundled installers, shortened links, and unnecessary redirects.
• Provide clear instructions showing users how to verify the checksum and digital signature.
• Encourage users to scan files before opening them and to avoid disabling security software simply to complete an installation.

For open-source software, linking to the source-code repository, published releases, development history, and reproducible-build information can offer additional transparency. In practice, the strongest trust signal is a combination of an official HTTPS download source, a valid publisher signature, a matching SHA-256 checksum, transparent release information, and a clean security scan. None of these measures can guarantee absolute safety on its own, but together they significantly reduce the risk.
