(this is initially for a Windows laptop, and potentially Android devices later on)
I am a longtime user of Avast, but for years now, I have been unhappy with the direction they are heading in. Finally decided to pull the bandaid off and look for a replacement.
That search has led me to Bitdefender, however I have reservations regarding the in-the-cloud scanning to offload work from the local computer. Some of my concerns may be unfounded, but I was unable to locate any information on how the cloud-based scanning operates.
- I have slow rural internet, so this feature will not only work very slowly, but will further slow down our biggest bottleneck, the internet.
- Security - uploading files (if that is even how this works), increases the attack surface area for potentialy sensitive information.
- Privacy
Before making the plunge, I need to understand how this works from a high-level, when it comes into play, and most critically, is it possible to disable it? If I can disable it entirely, then I don't need the other information.
FYI - I provide free tech support to friends and family. They too will be switching to whatever my new, chosen antivirus application is.
