Can Bitdefender find the csrss.exe trojan?

In the past week, my printer driver suddenly disappeared. The printer site does not allow me to download a new one. When I talked with the company, they claimed that I had a csrss.exe trojan.

I ran a full computer scan. Bitdefender said i was clean. I found the files that included the string (including the ones that should include it). Bitdefender said they were all clean.

Does this mean Bitdefender can't identify it? If my system is clean, something is preventing the driver download. I am not doing it on VPN.

I think the first thing worth clarifying is that csrss.exe is normally a legitimate and essential Windows process, called the Client Server Runtime Process. The genuine Windows file is typically located in C:\Windows\System32. Malware can sometimes use the same filename in an attempt to disguise itself, but the filename alone does not mean the computer is infected. So, I can't say that the diagnosis from the printer vendor was accurate, especially if Bitdefender didn't find anything malicious on the device during scan. For the record, Bitdefender does not rely solely on filenames when identifying malware. Detection is based on multiple factors, including the actual contents and behavior of a file. Therefore, finding a file called like that and having Bitdefender report it as clean does not by itself indicate that Bitdefender is unable to detect this type of threat, as it surely can.

Now, since you have already completed a full system scan and it returned clean, I think that's reassuring. You can also check the location of the running process in Task Manager. If the csrss.exe instance points to C:\Windows\System32, it's very likely the legitimate Windows component. I would strongly recommend not deleting or attempting to terminate it manually, since it is a critical Windows process after all.

If you would like an additional check, you can also run a Bitdefender Rescue Environment scan. This performs the scan outside the normal Windows environment and can help identify persistent threats that may otherwise attempt to hide while Windows is running. You can access it from Bitdefender → Protection → Antivirus → Scans → Rescue Environment.

As for the missing printer driver and the inability to download it, I would not assume those symptoms are evidence of a csrss.exe infection, especially if no threat has been detected. There are several other possibilities, including an issue with the manufacturer's download page, browser settings, Windows/driver compatibility, DNS or network filtering, or potentially another security component interfering with the download. The firewall might also worth checking here (if your Bitdefender product includes one).

In my opinion, it would be useful to know exactly what happens when you try to download the driver, so what are the symptoms exactly. For example, whether the download button does nothing, the website displays an error, the connection is blocked, or the file downloads and then disappears, or the download simply hangs. If Bitdefender is actually blocking something, you should normally also find a corresponding entry under Notifications, which can help you determine which protection module is involved, as there are several. Once you know this, we can take it from there, temporary disable the culprit module, download the driver, then re-enable the module. That would be one way to do it.
