Hi Bitdefender Community,

I recently received an alert under Dark Web Monitoring titled "Data Collection August 2026".
The alert mentions that my email (removed by admin) was involved in a breach collection of 280,482,679 records and lists a partial password ending with 098.
However, the dashboard does not show which specific website, service, or app this password was associated with. The note states that data breach collections cannot be traced back to a specific company.
Could you clarify:
* Is there any way to cross-reference or identify which specific account or domain leaked this entry?
* Since I am unable to identify the source platform, is the best action simply changing passwords across all accounts where I may have reused a variation ending in 098?

I will do my best to provide further clarification regarding these data breaches and data collection compilations.

“Data Collection” compilations on the Dark Web are large aggregated databases containing stolen or leaked information gathered from many different breaches, malware campaigns, credential-stealing operations, or previously published leak sets. They are usually not the result of one single hack or leak. Instead, someone combines data from dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of sources into one searchable or downloadable package.
The main danger is credential reuse, and these collections are valuable to attackers because they turn fragmented breach data into ready-made lists that can be processed automatically. Being a collection, it doesn't always include the source of the breached information, it's just a compilation of previously leaked data.

It's important to mention that receiving such alerts doesn't necessarily mean the data is newly stolen, and it doesn't automatically mean that your account was recently hacked. The information could have originated from a breach many years ago and subsequently been copied, merged, resold, reposted, and repackaged several times.

The appropriate response is usually to change any exposed password wherever it was reused, enable 2FA, review active sessions, and use unique passwords for every account.

A bit more context on data breaches in general: to find stolen data, Bitdefender scans the dark corners of the web using various methods. Once the data is found, they use a proprietary system for identity resolution to discover the identity of the breached individual, so they can alert the person about the breach, even if the breach itself includes little or outdated information.

Most commonly, breaches include information about users’ emails, passwords, names and usernames, phone numbers, and physical addresses. Their exposed data creates a snowball effect that ultimately leads to the leak, sale, or trade of entire digital identities on the Dark Web. However, breaches are not necessary found on a specific website. Like mentioned previously, they are usually found in compilations of usernames, passwords, phone numbers, etc. found in archives or texts on the Dark Web.

The Digital Identity Protection service for example, raises awareness about your Digital Footprint (data exposed in Surface Web) and remediation steps for data breaches (data exposed in Dark Web). However, you would not be able to change the username for a specific website, but you will be informed that in that specific period, data about you has appeared in data lists on the dark web.

This means that you could become victim of a scam, credential reuse. As the main purpose is to raise awareness of these breaches and the data involved can be various, there aren't really any mitigation steps for this scenario.
If the breach was about a password, you could have changed it, but the breach can also involve other types of data, such as phone numers, address, etc. And if these are listed somewhere on the dark corners of the web, there is no possible way to retrieve or delete them from there, because you don't have control over that leaked information.
