[duplicate] Trojan.fakealert.5

My BitDefender updated recently. Ever since, I started getting Virus alerts which say many of my files are infected with Trojan.FakeAlert.5. I'm running a Deep System Scan and the count of infected files is 20000+ and counting. I had stopped the scan previously and saw that the options for the files were Ignore, Delete and Quarantine. Most of the infected files are in C:\Windows and seem to be regular Windows system files.

Just out of curiosity, could these be false positives (due to today's update)? Because I'm not seeing any "symptoms" of FakeAlert (as seen online).

What should I do with the infected files? Is it time to re-install Windows 7 x64?

This has been reported. It seems to have only effected Windows 7 & Windows Vista 64Bit OS's. Check out this thread more detail: Link

Actually, it's affecting apparently only 64bit OS's. It's also affecting Vista too, not just Win 7.

I got it too, i am currently doing a scan and i am getting over 11 thousand files infected

I have the very same problem!!!

BitDefender has just killed my main work computer, and is threatening to kill my second one!

Just when i booted my desktop computed, bitdefender started going haywaire fallging every single file that was access as a "Tojan.FakeAlert.5". And I mean every single scanned file!!!

BitDefender automatically killed or quarantined every single system you can think of, every visual studio file that was accessed on startup, basically everything.

My laptop has not beed updated since two days ago, since it was not being used. Just a test I turned it on, disabled the automatic protection, updated mannually and then scanned manually.

Again, every single ###### file was flagged, the count was at over 10000 files, it just stopped it when i was tired of waiting.

I also have malwarebytes and not a single file was detected.

And you surely know how mb is akin to false positives.

If I hadn't turned the auto av off, BOTH my work computers would now be KILLED.

I just had a talk with a friend of mine (she has my third license), and she just said her bd av started going haywaire too.

This just can't be a virus, no virus is this good.

So please, BitDefender team, what IS going on with the product?

I really prefer my antivirus working FOR me, not against me!

Yeah, I'm having the same problem here. Actually, the bitdefender popup told me it blocked the virus that came from almost all of my applications, making them unable to be used. I had to do a restore from a few days ago and now it seems like everything it working.

Just wanted to know if this is an issue caused by bitdefender or something else.

i suggest you to turn of bitdefender's real time protection OFF till they get their next update. Turn it off before bitdefender decides to delete important files before it's too late

Apparently, they're false positives all right, brought on by a faulty update. Turn off Real-time Protection till the next update (which should hopefully fix this issue).

I have disabled bitdefender. It is the only way to get the computer working again.

But the question is... won't this virus take that as an opportunity to download some other heavy viruses?

I bet it will take a long time for the BD team to get this fixed which means trouble

The trojan's name is Trojan.FakeAlert.5

So, is it really safe to deactivate bitdefender when the trojan might possible take that opportunity to make even more damage?

I got it today but not along with any update, I think I got it from a file that I download because after I opened it it's when all the trouble started, way after the last update

BitDefender Labs are aware of this problem and a fix will be delivered shortly by Automatic Update. In the mean time, please keep the Realtime Protection disabled.
