Reading Scan Logs

I just started a trial of Bitdefender 2010 Total Security and so far so good. I have a question concerning scan logs. Earlier the logs were opening up with Firefox and now they started opening up with notepad (See Below). Can I get it back to Firefox since it's so much easier to read? Also when reading the logs there's no detail in it showing a breakdown of the scan. Is there a way to see one?

Hello FuSchnickens,

Scan logs are basic XML files and will open with the default application which is associated with XML files. You can change it by creating an XML file on your desktop (you can do this with Notepad, and save the file with the XML extension... or just find an XML file in your system). Then right click on it, choose Properties, and change the default application to Firefox, or whatever application you want to view XMLs with.

By default, XMLs are associated with the default internet browser. But some applications might change this.

Just started using BD 2010. My default app for XML was Dreamweaver which took too long to open so I switched it to FireFox. Firefox only displays

C:\D:\E:\

when it opens a log file.

I am surprised that there is not a built in log reader for BD as the XML files are not necessarily easy to understand for a novice. It would also be handy in order to add exceptions easily without having to hunt down the files and add them manually.

I was checking the file to find out which 2 objects were not being read and the log displays the following:

I assume this means that Launcher.apm is password protected and can't be checked but not sure why it is indicating 2 objects.

A custom log reader, that would display the problem files, allow you to select and scan them indivually and then add them to the exceptions or perform some other action would seem to me to be a useful tool. Maybe this is availalbe some place else???

The default application to open scan logs (XML files) is Internet Explorer.

What do you mean by compatible?

A log file provides you with information regarding the operation, results etc. of the completion of a task the program has performed. You can then interpret the information to help you diagnose possible problems. A new version of a program may or may not add or remove features to the log depending upon their need or value.

Since it does not appear that there is a custom log reader for BD, and log files are xml files, you should be able to open any of these using a browser (Firefox is not displaying them for me, must be a ****** error somewhere.)

You can also open them in any text editor. Try notepad, wordpad, crimson editor etc.

When you select the read log file button BD will run the application that is currently associated to the xml file extension that is set on you particular computer. If it is not working for you, you can change it to something else by going Tools>Folder Options>File Types and changing the association to the xml file extension (WinXP)

There is a view Logs link at the bottom of the BD window. It opens a listing of the BD Log files. These appear to be broken down by category but they only provide a limit amount of info. If you open one of the items from the list it displays similar information as is displyed in the list. This appears to be an overall activity log (History and Event) for the application and, my guess is, would probably be version specific. When you view specific scans from this tool, you are provided with a button that will allow you to view the Scan Log. These logs are the XML logs that can be opened with a text editor.

The logs are XML files which will be opened with the default XML viewer. If that application has the ability to parse XMLs and also make XSL transformations (browsers have this capability, by default), than the will be shown not as XML, but as a webpage with tabels containing log information.

However, logs are visually parsed only if the logwas generated by the same version of BitDefender as the one that's currently installed. This is because different BD versions have different XML formats and different XSL transformation rules (because the logs don't contain the same information). And also it means that logs cannot be visually transformed on systems that don't have BitDefender installed.

In plain English: logs generated by your BitDefender will be shown in a pleasant way until you change/remove your BitDefender product. Afterwards, if you with to view the logs, you can only view them as simple XML files, with a text editor (the browser won't be able to display it, not even as XML, because the XSL will be missing and the browser won't be able to interpret it).

So no, the logs are not ”backward” (nor ”forward”, for that matter) compatible.

I am facing problem in reading logs of previous versions of Bitdefender, snapshot of which is attached. How do I read these log files?

Right click -> View page source. You will see the XML content of the log.

To properly read the logs of previous BitDefender versions you need to extract the attached archive (rename .txt to .zip) and copy those folders in the current BitDefender directory (C:\Program Files\BitDefender)

But I would like to suggest to integrate these in the Bitdefender installers by-default, so that no need for doing so manually.
